i just sifted my first two bags of turface mvp thru 1/8th hardware cloth.i did not get enough to fill 4 3.5 gal rubbermaid bins half way.it was about 30% after sifting.i will get more later this week.

hey, i tried the 1/8" screen for a couple of plants and found it to be a little too loose.

i'm using the regular aluminum window screen from lowes.

after sieving with this you should get about 15 gals of usable material from 2 bags.

µS is microsiemens, mS is millisiemens, they are just different sizes on the same scale. 1000 µS is 1.0 mS. Electrical Conductivity is universal, all EC meters are working off the same scale.

PPM is a conversion of EC, there are several different conversion factors and it sounds like your meter has a few of them. The two most common conversion factors for hydroponics use are NaCl (.5) and 442 (.7).

I like using EC because when you say EC of 1.2 mS there's only one way to interpret it. 1000 ppm could mean a few different things.

If you choose to use ppm make sure you know your conversion factor and the conversion factor the nutrient company is using in their recommendations.

Hope that helps :)

A couple questions to get out, preferably to people using the turface based PPK system and running Jacks... and perhaps also running Floranova Bloom at the clones...

What ph level am I shooting for when I have clones in turface, wick feed, running floranova bloom at 300ppm? I believe my natural water ph is around 6.5. I ran down and did some quick ph testing and...
Some standing floranova bloom solution is ph 6
My water is 6.5
Some standing floranova bloom solution in a container full of turface is ph 5

In my particular situation I was able to easily obtain Blue Dream clones. Every supplier of these clones only had them available in soil. So I have four rooted plants doing pretty well but they're in red solo cups. Temps are around 75F, humidity around 50%, they're under four T8 6500k's. The information I found on the 'net suggested that I gently pour the clone and soil into something filled with water and swish/shake/massage the soil off the roots and then put them into a hydro system.

Does this typically work out? :) I'm trying to avoid getting much or any foreign soil or nutes into my turface.

What I've done when transplanting from soil to hydro is place the rootball over an airstone and let the bubbles gently knock the soil off. Ain't really got to be perfect. Just try to get most of it.

Personally, what I would do in your shoes is grow em out a bit in soil, then take cuttings off of them. It may take a couple weeks, but you're still way ahead vs starting with seed.

Good luck

RM I like that idea... and I just may do that. I'm in an interesting work situation that's going to have me away for a week and I'm not sure being away for the week is the best way to start my first ever grow lol

I was in the same situation with 3 blue dreams recently. I stuck the solo cups in a sink filled with water and gently swished them back and forth then held them under running water to get most of what's left. Once I transplanted them into turface they sat there for a couple of days then took off.

On the subject of ph I took D9s advice to simply load the Jacks at 1.2EC and left ph do wtfever it wants. I keep an eye on it but after initially being in the high 4s it settled down around 5.8. It drifts around some but I mostly ignore it. From what I can tell the plants could care less.

Imo anytime you buck what D9 says without a lot of experience with ppks and growing in general you're fucking up :D.

On another note I have a backup grow with a kiddie pool full of plants in a circle in coco and I'm feeding them the same thing I feed the ppks. They look fantastic so far. I have a lot of faith in the ppk but I'm new to it and I learned long ago to not put all my eggs into one basket.

are there any other valid choices for a top tub? TSC has them for pickup only. i really wanna build one to try out. im a big fan of DIY hydro. on a second thought, i cant find turface or similar here either. a sense of impending doom is surrounding my project dreams already lol. i can get small red lava rock at lowes and thats about it.

Most farm supply stores should carry something similar to the tractor supply containers DH. Not sure if the lava rock has enough wicking ability for a ppk, but it's possible. Maybe a test is in order
