very nice mr. f,you have some really nice mature specimens,im just now starting to feel like i have the experience to be getting larger stuff....its one thing to kill a 4 dollar walmart cactus, something else to kill one that may be 20-30 years old...
got another couple of cactus about to blossom in the greenhouse,a hamatacactus and a glory of texas.

speaking of blossoms,my angel wing begonia, which is over 7 feet tall now,has finally bloomed.i have never seen one in blossom before...hard to believe the plant was a 6 inch cutting less than 2 years ago...
a look at the tropical houseplant side of the greenhouse, really need to get the back porch finished so i can move some stuff around, its basically a wall of foliage in there...

as part of the flagstone work i had made two planting beds with dry stacked walls, one i did as a butterfly and humming bird plant area, with lantanas, another penstemon,a lipstick plant and another trumpet vine....i know the hummers like them as i see them in the yard everyday now,2 males were having a little battle this morning and there are always butterflies hanging around now.

the other area i made into a cactus/rock garden with mainly hedgehog cactus and some of the rainbow cactus
almost forgot, also picked up another Astrophytum cactus, got this one from the local nursery people but recently i have been looking on ebay and there is all sorts of crazy cactus available.this particular genus tosses some freaky mutations on occasion and there are a number of "famous" cultivars,im going to try ordering a couple soon, theres at least one place with show quality specimens for around 50 bucks each...
the new one...

and the other astrophytum i have, actually got this at lowes....they had 2,really wish i had snagged the second one when i saw it...
only neem oil so far for spraying, plus a thousand ladybugs...it was so dry for most of the summer there wasnt any other vegetation around for them, and the ants were out of control earlier too...
one of the best things about doing the garden in native plants for me is now when i go out in the desert i know what a lot of stuff is,and being on a bike its not all just blurring by...
im psyched to be able to go back to many places i have only ever been to in a car, even my favorite local park up in the mountains, just 37 miles away, now its within easy(lol, yeah, easy pulling a loaded trailer over a mountain pass!) striking distance...but like you say,so many places still to explore even right here in my own backyard so to speak..
speaking of the back garden...had put in a small 3 row bed of mesculin mix, tokyo green and italian red scallions,,some green onions and walla walla sweet onions which i may have pulled as weeds...try again i guess...almost have the 100 gallon smart pot full, one more big bag, will be a tomato cage in the middle for a squash plant or two, then carrots and beets around the outside...

picked this beauty up today at the farmers market,a really nice mature clump of escobaria vivipara (?) already with plenty of blossoms...and a nice little occatillo, they grow pretty quick to pretty large size...
well it seems like a while since i got any new cactus...like maybe 48 hours...too long in my book....ok,had a couple of these for a bit, just got around to potting them, only the old lady cactus is new...
an aeonium crest, needs some rehab but it will be a nice specimen soon enough..
