looks really good over @ your camp. label me jealous! really wish the 5 yards i was giving my ladies was mounded up like that instead of cooped up in those dumb pots. made three smaller mounds around 3 yards a piece and really like the way they look. i think i will dump all my soil on the ground like that next year.

seems like those ladies will be touching sooner than later. are you happy with the room you have between each plant? think i will do mine 12x12

Thanks for the kind words every body.

Organicp, they are pretty close together, but not too close to touching yet. I will just hack them back if I have to. I wish I had more room in my garden like when I had a field of 60 300 gal dumb pots, but the geography of the place I am at now restricts me to a closer spacing, so I roll with it.

I could cut down trees and do a bunch of earth work to put more space between them, but I like my place and dont really dig the industrial marijuana farm look..been there done that...its not as fulfilling for me as doing it this way..with the land and trees. I have enough spaces left to do a garden with awesome spacing for 7 plants, next year im going to go down on the flood plain and put some in on 15 ft centers instead of 12.

Have to agree with VEGn. Planting directly in the ground is the way to grow. Could never figure why people plant in fabric instead of digging a hole in the ground. perhaps its just easier to buy/make the bag. They seem to work just fine for the folks using them.
Just my opinion Vegn, you could pull every other plant and get the same amount of product you know.

Very nice VegnOut! I prefer the in ground planting as well. How are you watering your mounds? Are you making rings around the trees with that drip emitter tubing? Thx!

Sho nuff! Summer Solstice is rapidly approaching!!

Ever dig a hole that big? let alone 20 or 30 of them?

Smartpots are lazy, thats why so many ppl use them!

It's been damn chilly round these parts lately!

But the question is; is it easier to dump it on the ground or make and fill a fabric container? Having done both, my vote is for just dumping it on the ground in a big pile. Digging in clay is like making an earth pot. I like piles..of soil, buds, etc.,

Big up to FillThePotMore for showing the way! Where you at?

I dug some holes this summer because of height requirements. Not bad at all...if you borrow a back hoe. My only problem is my dumb ass did not listen...roots almost to the edge already. 5 yards is the way to go.

Veg, if I was still on that solid southern clay I'd say raised container all the way. I'm running a big pile but it's well mixed with double-dug local soil. I didn't realize you were dumping - have you found plants to bother attempting to root in the lower clay if given a generous pile?

Yes the soil on top improves the clay below. I rototill, throw down some gypsum and compost spray the whole thing with tea and start piling. The roots chase the water in to the clay And the next year when you dig down youll find black earth with worms etc i stead of hardpan clay...improving the soil through mineralization and biology...

I must be an idiot because I dug holes and have smart pots, lol. I like digging large holes, and playing in the dirt. My wife calls me Joe Dirt.

I kinda feel if you have a flat ground to go ahead and dump mounds, but if you have an excavator in there anyway on a hill may as well dig down a little because you will almost certainly feel like expanding in the future, but yeah man, better to spend more money on dirt if the question comes up.

but if you have to pack em in at all, breathing containers will do better than mounds, as the sides of a breathing container counts as oxygenated surface area, and that squared off area still comes out ahead of a rounded one using the same diameter.

you can see that things were out of control a week ago..

But by cutting back and thus offsetting above/below ground mass in favor of below, I have attempted to help assure above ground growth will be healthy over the near future.

..and here is your bomthreat kush being selfed (the near short plants are the ones reversed)

I'll try to grab some of the outdoor soon, we're cruising right along here.

Tom...I am a total believer in at least a little root dominance to create a healthy plant. Do you really think pruning shoots is equal to growing it that way in the first place? Just a question, I do not know the answer.
