a few pics from yesterday morning, the local cactus cuttings i rooted this winter have really taken off,i ended up taking a few out and relocating them, tough critters these cactus, all the opuntias are doing particularly well in the cactus collection as well...getting as many of the sun loving species out and hardened off for full sun exposure, seeing excellent growth on many of the cactus, one of the most interesting things to me is watching how they all start to lean to the south as they grow and adjust to the light...

Wow!! What an amazingly peaceful oasis! :)
I love the red raised bed and beautiful cactus & rock gardens!
That is exactly the kind of thing I’d like to do on the lower terrace area! Wanna do mine next? lol
Beautiful work Unc! Enjoy it!!

lol,as i keep tellin people you couldnt pay me enough to do this! and im only about 1/3 done with the front and still have another whole back yard area to think about...not in any hurry though, its interesting enough watching everything grow at this point, not to mention it takes a fair chunk of time each day to tend to things, but i am enjoying the transformation.

more cactus flowers, and the cactus i have managed to harden off to full sun, getting more and more of them out, usually i have been putting them out in the morning and putting them under the porch around 11 am and back out after the sun goes mostly around the corner of the house...after about a week they are typically ready for all day exposure,at least 8 solid hours of sun...

These are my egg donors Unc. They're nice they are calm and they keep omlets on the table! These aren't mine (local friends) but if so they d also do a killer job eating up bugs in the gardens!
I'm into the whole heirloom/heritage thing so when I can I'm getting rhode island reds, barred rocks, and americanas (for some green eggs)

next year im going to try and get some chickens i think, still too many projects to take care of this summer,im trying to get the front taken care of this year and well established, and get the front porch greenhouse/cold frame paneled, and im going to need another small one attached to the garage to over winter the potted cactus since theres no way its all going to fit back inside again, its going to be a challenge to get the houseplants back inside for the winter as it is,aside from the very tenderest cactus they will stay on the porch for the winter....i can crawl up into the attic and run the hot air from the garden into the porch for the winter to provide night time heating so they should do well there....want to turn at least the main veggie bed into a coldframe for winter crops....need to tear down my back porch and rebuild that, partly as a clear panel roof screen room....and im putting a third veggie bed in.....oh yeah, and a mint box and maybe some raspberry/blackberry canes.....and then there will be a garden around the one tree out back....and an in ground local cactus conservatory with local wildflowers and such....and....

i know one thing about women, they hate anything you regard as more important than them...and right now the mj garden is number one priority...its the tool that allows the rest of this to happen after all,but as the rest of all this evolves it will start taking over the task of putting food on the table and the mj garden can become another hobby....

i think i have well passed the 200 different plant species in the house and around the property,im sure im past 100 cactus at this point too not even considering the in ground species of which i have at least a dozen...just added a white sands claret cup to the cactus mound,a nice little 3 stem cluster, looks like the strawberry hedgehog cutting i got from my neighbor rooted so i need to plant that soon...

and just bought a 200 dollar totem pole cactus, its actually 3 stems in one pot,has to be well over 50 years old, around 4 feet tall, some good branches that would make excellent cuttings and at least 2 that would be worth 100+ dollars on their own rooted, plus another 3-4 smaller offsets that could be rooted...the main stems are fairly frost damaged from lack of care, depending on what i see root wise during the repotting i may try and separate the three stems and repot them as individuals...hard to say,i may want to root the offsets first and then repot the main stems just to be sure i preserve it...

lol,i was right, you do have that water from the sky thing! not surprisingly many cactus do very well in the high desert, the majority will still need to be at least in a cold frame, but that should be fine...for now....i will have a cactus greenhouse in the future....

Yes very wet here. Have a friend in the high desert- brings me new genetics from time to time. The one guy I trust for pest free clones. So arid their that there is never spider mites. Around here with the humidity your almost sure to get spider mites bringing in clones from outside sources.

Never smoked any desert weed but I would suspect the outdoor is fantastic with the high elevation arid weather. I suspect afghani does well in this environment.
