Old 70s seeds, Elephant, thai stick, P red

Nice find!
What I would do is read up on germing old seeds and (if anything germs...) do an open pollination reproduction keeping it pure with multiple males and females. There are enough modern hybrids and a lack of traditional genetics. And concentrate on one of the three at a time.

my advice if this is for real (and that thai seed looks right imo), is to like your intuition suggests, try the ones you have the most of first. But stop short of trying to sprout all of every variety, as you never know how close we are to regenerating plantlets from viable cells, regardless if the seed will germinate or not. ;)

that will be so great. then we'll need just the tiniest amount of cells from seeds that could never crack naturally

I agree with sprouting those you have the most of first. You have a lot of Panama on which to hone this new skill.

Ive just sprouted an Elephant x Ortega pack. Ill be watching long term to see if the E's are one in the same.

Really glad you took the advice to get a thread going. Youll have a bunch of knowledgeable heads to help you out.

Great luck!

Elephant!! dj short loved the elelphant! Get germing!!
Panama red and Thai stick too, omg you lucky dog.
check the Australian forum, Kangativa is growing some original thai and
holy shizz! that stuff is incredible..must be 25 ft tall:)
Good luck on your germing.
mack.

Thanks! I want to try the elephant, but ultimately, I think I'll practice my 'old seeds technique' more with the more plentiful varieties in the hope that I'll be an expert when I get around to the limited elephant.

When I read your thread I thought of an article in SKUNK magazine of a strain called ELEPHANT EAR the article is on old school sativas. It is very well possible this is your strain? Heres the specs.

-ELEPHANT EAR-

Type: Sativa (hybrid)

Origin: Hawaii

............................Sounds like a baddass strain. Put me down for the Elephant

Hmm, interesting it is a sativa, but has broad leaves... which I thought was a feature of indicas. The elephant here is thought to be an indica, and did have wide leaves too. Could be something, I wish it had more info on lineage...

I wish I knew an old dude that was sitting on a stash of old seeds.

You should read up on germing old seeds before you start out, it might help improve your odds of success.

I want the thai stick. Use paper towels so you can see what is happening. 80 to 84 degrees F.

Yeah paper towels is my preferred method... I have 21 '77 "frank" (name of the dealer) seeds that I put in paper towels now, as these were both stored the poorest and are simultaneoulsy somewhat plentiful.

Awesome stuff, man! Agreed with HITH, definitely read up on germinating old seed, and then pull out all the stops. Get some great stuff going. Also, if your still taking votes on what first, mine would go for the Elephant. Only a few of those, so If germ is a bust, you could just move on quickly, plus to be quite honest, I've never heard of it before, and it really caught my interest. :)

Either way though.... subbed. Good luck on all! One other thing, a member here by the name of "jahgeeenlabel" I believe, has p. red from the '70s, and has a thread on it. So, you should also peruse that thread for some pointers, if, of course, you need it. ;)
Thanks! His plants are beautiful! Ultimately I think I chose the other direction though with which ones to germ and I'm saving the elephants for now...

Been looking for a real P Red from the mid to late 70's. Same time frame as yours. Totally enjoyed the smoke. One I haven't forgotten to this day. Hope you get some to germ.

I will see what I can do... supposedly there are many of those seeds...

That is some fine luck you got there. If you can get any to grow make some more seeds please and sell them on the bay.

Will do! I'll shoot for some open pollinations one day, although that seems a far way off right now.

Thank you for that great tip, I will definitely do so. Funny related story is that there are actually two friends who totally seperately stored seeds in this fashion, but different varieties cause they lived in different towns. One of them has a son who passed a few of the seeds to me (the Frank variety I'm germing right now for instance), but the rest are on their way to a well-known seed company. Well whoever is being given the seeds has supposedly promised to do just what you said and give the cuts back sooner than later. I told him we'll see 'bout that one.

Lucky me the other friend without a son decided I was a better to unload his stash. :woohoo:

Sounds good but let's see some seeds CRACKED. I seriously don't think any are gonna sprout. Prove me wrong!

Got some in a towel now. These were only scratched a bit. Its been 48 hours now but my temps topped out at about 80 so I' put em on a hood that was a bit warmer. We'll see.

Its all good, man! Looking forward to seeing them all. Makes more sense to start with the larger batches of seed, anyways. Good luck! Hope you get some great yesteryear keepers/breeders. :)

Thanks! I need to dig up my thermostat....

There are quite a few different techniques mentioned....

The panama is going to be very popular.

When you pre-soak those... add about 50ppm of nutes to the soak water. The stored food inside the shell is going to be degraded.

Look around, there are some threads on germing old seeds that have some pretty good info in them. :)

You think the 50ppm of nutes is better than maxicrop? I was going to try the maxi crop next time

I could individually scratch each seed with a fine sandpaper, soak in 1tsp per gallon maxicrop for an hour, (maybe in a pressurized container?)... then into the towel at 80 to 84.

Totally dark for the towel? Maybe I shouldn't use the hood after all...

These are the 'frank 77' seeds. I checked them at the 40 hour point with no results, but they were probably only 78-80F, so I've warmed them more, and it should be pointed out that I only effectively scratched about a third of them.

Anyone see the scalpel method on MNS forums?

Also, for germing, should the towels be in a container with 100% humidity, or just under that... I've been under the impression in the past that too high of humidity can encourage fungus growth rather than sprouting... thoughts?

Dunno, maxicrop is probably fine.

Roll the sandpaper in a small tube and tape it. Pour the seeds into the tube with your thumb closing one end. Put your finger on the other end and shake for 30 seconds.
All scratched nicely, all at once. Been doing that for a decade now, works great. :)

I'd shoot for 75F-85F until they sprout. Anything higher and I've run into mush.

Personally? I'd scratch them, soak them for 12 hours and then plant them in individual cups with moist soil and plastic wrap with rubber band. The whole paper towel thing is just too easy to damage seeds when they're fragile, wouldn't recommend it with older ones. Plant them at around 1/2 inch deep. No shallower or you'll be trying to pull hull halves off a delicate seedling. Can't imagine they're going to be super healthy the first few days, not after all these years.

Here's pushing for at least a few good females. :)

Stay Safe! :blowbubbles:
