Blue light at night the controversy rages

I think the 2 hour downtime before turning on the blue light may be important. That way the plant goes into night mode.

im not so sure, remember that darkness period has to be unbroken in order to induce flowering.

i think a better way to 'beat nature' would be to experiment with using a longer day length combined with infra red light in the dark period to induce flowering.

IR in the dark period promotes the flowering response and makes the plant 'think' that the day has been shorter by two hours.

so you may get away with 14 or 15 hour days and the extra growth that would bring with it - if you gave the plant 2 hours of IR directly after lights out.

The only spectrum utilized will be 430nm which is just outside UV at the start of the blue spectrum. hopefully this will make the difference.

Blue Light

Hi Folks,
One of the most fascinating threads I've read for ages! Right at the cutting edge & much kudos and thanks to all who've contributed. Especially Sativa Dragon who actually put his money where his mouth was & built a working prototype. :thank you:
IMHO Verdant Green makes a good point which is clearly a concern but I also think that the targeted frequency of the light and the two hour delay after lights out will have an effect, as yet unknown.
But that's the whole point! Without those with the ever enquiring mind, the hunger for knowledge, the intelligence & self-motivation to experiment, we'd still be rubbing sticks together to make fire!
Stay safe & keep up the fascinating work. :tiphat:

Hey Iffy it is really cool to get feedback like this, seems to make the whole experiment worth while knowing how much people appreciate it, while at the same time perhaps finding out something new to share with everyone before someone steels it and patents it or whatever. As far as I am concerned the only skill anyone needs for this project is soldering granted my soldering station is worth $500 bones, there are heat guns and special conductive adhesives that would do a better job at soldering and run about $20, so this tech is not out of reach from anyone that has a hardware store near by and can buy stuff off of ebay. And let me tell ya... When those lights came on with the intensity they did it took me by surprise, and was rewarded by some strange blue light that seemed to make things glow.

Hey SD,
So anyone can do it right? You miss the point my humble friend, its the ones that actually do it that push things on. You took the time to research & plan, purchase, build & test so that we could all learn from it. I think you & people like you are the strength & foundation of this amazing thing we call IC Mag.
Looking forward to updates of your tests immensely.
Stay safe :tiphat:

Thank you!

Thank you!

Hey there Iffy,

I am VERY greatful for the recognition, I return your recognition in recognition of providing positive reinforcment and recognition.

I shall not let my people down, I should have candidates within days, mother nature just needs to drop the pants and show me the goods.

I have some good news, I have found 2 150watt HPS Sunlight systems, this will make sure we get some good light to our test subjects, and speaking of subjects we have found them, and the sex has been determined, seems these Himalayan Landrace genes are taking there sweet time showing there goods. But I am pretty sure what I see is female. I think the Addition of the 150 watt Sun systems will be a welcome additition.

im very excited to this, but dont forget the version with IR at night...
10min IR light right affter lights go out should be enough to let the normal lamp run 14/10 or 16/8. Maybe a combination of blue&ir puts all this to max... but ok lets wait for your results :)

There are no IR LED's at this time during this experiment, 430nm is the wavelength of choice for this experiment, depending on results I will or will not add IR to the mix.

Was reading this thread and http://boards.cannabis.com/grow-log/165934-first-attempt-24-hour-martian-method.html side by side and wouldn't use blue light on nights. My 2 cents ;)

With only one post, you have yet to reach 2 cents worth of input. Not to be a dick or kiss ass, but some of these people are actual horticulturalists on top of being long time growers. They are not concerned with losing or messing up a few plants in the sake of scientific exploration and confirmation of theory. Not too many people are equipped and knowledgeable enough to do side by side grows with 100% control; being so dialed in that you have supreme confidence that your introduced variable is the only difference from the control group, and the expertise to diagnose subtle differences.

There is no way you could have read this thread enough to give even two cents worth.

I do not even see how our experiment is even remotely similar to the Alien experiment.

They did this,

For 24 hours a day, they are using:
4x 13w Red LED "bulbs", 652 nm, 5 mm LEDs, 168 LEDs per bulb
2x 25w Red incandescent "party bulbs" from GE (for Far Red light)

For the 12 hour "day" period, I'm using:
4x 13w Red/blue LED "bulbs", same as above only 83% red, 17% blue LEDs
2x 42w 2700k CFLs. (I may switch these with 6500k CFLs if I feel more blue light is necessary

We are using 430nm LED's for 10 hours in the dark period.

Nuff said

Hey all when this thing ramps up I will be starting a seperate journal to properly document the experiment, I am open to title ideas.
