Simple DIY Retro T5> T8/12

I have been contemplating doing this once my HOT5 bulbs lose intensity

Go to
http://www.ledwholesalers.com/store/...&productId=957

These 4ft bulbs (@20w) are $30- almost the same price as aqarium bulbs, BUT, with 3-4 times the life expectancy.

Buy some T8/12 connectors, reflectors and some wood for a simple DIY frame.

A buddy of mine put these in his dental lab (10ft ceiling), replacing standard bulbs as is really happy

I was thinking to start a new thread based on this, but I am not physically doing it-yet- and people want more than concepts.

Since the bulbs handle 100-240, euro growers can jump on board

If you run with this, please post a link.

I'm sure I missed something here.... but here's a thread to a mailorder outfit that was one of the first hits on a search for t5ho. Prices start at $3-4 and go up of course. Cheaper by the case too. I expect they all come from China anyway,,,, with the exception of some German ones .... possibly.

to be honest its all over my head. I don't understand electricity at all, I have no knowledge of or interest in all the ways things get put together. Its just a bunch of invisible monsters that like to kill you in my mind. I could never put anything together myself. I need something that comes in a box, that I can just plug into a wall. There are too many variables and diff places describing the same thing differently for my liking. I'd love to make the switch, but I'm sticking with HPS for now as I know where I am and its all plug and play.

GMT... No need to worry they are plug & play if you purchase one like I linked above...

That said... We each have our ways, maybe start with a small 96watter (1'x2'x4tubes) in a small cab and see where it goes...

Any way, Best of Luck...:tiphat:

In this case, you get what you pay for, assuming you know what you want first

Most of my bulbs come from aquarium industry, which has higher standards and quality than ~$3 bulbs. They may look the same, but that's where any comparison ends

I've heard that Phillips last better than the cheaper brands.

So there's the question. Do you you know what you are paying for? I'm fairly certain that I don't. :tiphat:

Having been in the Tropical Fish Business in the 70s, I must add that the retail level has been stepped on at least one 'extra' time. MSRP was 50% of cost, at retail. 'Wholesale' was doubled at that level as well.

And this was when 'most' things were still made in the USA. ....

That said I'm Hoping that the $5-6 ea, by the carton will be dependable. The Chinese have, after all, gone to great lengths to copy technologies from Everywhere else.

My idea would be to utilize the same companies that supply the grocery stores, etc with their annual re-tubing exercises. They bring in a 'man lift' and replace All their tubes annually..... or at least they used to.

I was gifted, with several boxes of used T12s 20 years ago, or so. Used them in the shop and garage for Years. I would Not however do that for my Grow lights. Especially when I can get them by the box for less than 1/2 of what the local stores want.

jm$.o2 Your mileage may vary.

I'd say that was a fair price. Good purchase!

You might (If you haven't), try running a small fan under them to keep the air moving. I also 'tip' the light, so that the heat doesn't just hang under the tubes.

Mine only have one run on them so hoping for better. My Hydafarms came with Phillips, so we'll see. I'll be firing them up again in a month or so.

I grow for myself and a couple of friends. So I'm not perpetual. If I kept them busy, I'd have a ton of smoke by the end of the year.:woohoo:

Not sure of the amount, but I Think I've lowered my temps by 15-20*F, by tilting the fixture a couple of inches, and adding the fan. It did not seem to lower the intensity of light? Who knows.

Because the light is so close to the tips, it also provides circulation for the plant. I've heard that's a good thing as well?
