Return of the Quantum Tower LED PC case

trem0lo, much respect for a fellow micro and organic grower doing us all proud with this setup! :good: If you're anything like me, I find that micro setups truly test the skill of the grower.

It's great that you've analysed how your hobby needs to fit in with your lifestyle and then met those needs with the perfect function. i.e. smell-proof, light proof, silent and with a self-sustaining water supply. How much do you usually yield off these runs?

PS. Keep writing as well as you are. Updates have been a pleasure to read so far :artist:

@medmaker420 Thank you, your garden is looking dank as well! Rock out those LEDs!!

@MrCopy Always a pleasure. Cheers to your garden too!

@Penguin59 Thank you sir for the kind words :tiphat: I agree, micro growing is incredibly difficult on every level. The smaller the space, the harder it is. I certainly miss my 250w HPS with 3 gallon pots.

Quick update for you guys. Weeks 7-9 are my favorite part of the grow--not only does the plant fill in to its potential, but you can sneak tasters to get an idea of what the buzz will be like. Unfortunately the smell increases during these weeks by a significant amount. Carbon needs to be changed weekly and "hanging out" with the plants is no longer an option. The door needs to be open just long enough and not longer, or else the house begins to fill with a deep skunky odor within minutes.

I use a two-pronged approach to battle smell: A standard can filter design with a one inch carbon layer, and a carbon-based furnace filter. The brand is Accumulair, and they make filters in many sizes. I would not trust them to scrub an entire grow, but they do remove excess odors while I'm tending to the plants. They are great at removing cooking odors as well.

I'll have pics up soon. I'm dry at the moment so I'm tempted to start taking... samples.

Must... resist... urge to get high...

its crazy that u have to replace the carbon every week... that just dosnt sound right to me somehow thats crazy much carbon

Hey kottonmouth they are Noctua fans made for silence and pushing/pulling through watercooling radiators, so their static pressure is pretty good. They are silent or nearly so--my actual PC makes more noise and that runs Noctua fans too. I turn them up/down depending on the temperature outdoors. They don't pull a huge amount of air but with LEDs heat isn't really a problem anyway.

Yeah I was surprised at the amount of carbon I go through Zoidberg. During veg and the first month it doesn't need changing at all. Once they're about 3 weeks into 12/12 the smell gets exponentially worse and the carbon fills up faster. I guess it makes sense when you think about it--the commercial filters with 50 pounds of carbon only last about a year, my filter only holds like 2 cups, lol. So, a week per pound of carbon during max smell output seems right.

I just ordered some 4x8 air phase coconut carbon, I'm hoping that will help some. This pheno is way way smelly, a bit worse than last time and those were bad enough. When I open the door my face is literally blasted with a wave of warm, acrid, rotting sweet skunk. Anytime I touch them my hands smell the whole day. It's gross and awesome at the same time :canabis:

I'm pleased to see that the older lady is starting to fatten up which indicates a shorter flower time than the last F2s of this strain. We will see though, one pheno last run had a growth spurt of new calyxes around this time.

Here's a nice shot that shows the younger and healthier girl with only enough training to flatten her stem to the screen. Lots of fat lime green calyxes and tons of resin. Can't wait to get a few clones going next run. I have a few that I'm trying to root atm. Hopefully they pull through.

I took a taster bud the other night... not bad for 7 weeks! It's still early and potency should increase, also the high will "round out" so to speak, but it's basically there by now.

This one has a nice sour diesel head high, where you focus on something and it's like you're flying toward it at high speed, complete with vertigo. Another pheno had this effect and it's wicked fun to just space out with it. It gets your heart going with some trippiness, but not too scary and just enough to keep things interesting. It's also dreamy and thoughtful once the intensity lessens--I found myself picking up a book later on. There is some body but just enough to relax... this should intensify and balance out the raciness toward harvest.

She has a great taste too--a mouthwatering diesel/skunk that lingers. I woke up the next morning and could still taste it!

Here they are at 6/7 weeks...

Wonder what the light bleached bud tastes like... since theirs no chlorophyl

Nice buds!

Could you tell me more about the LEDs you use? Which spectrum do you use and are it noname LEDs or Osram/ Cree LEDs?

How big is the space inside your PC?

Thank you very much for answering my latest questions. :)

Right on MrCopy, that's my old thread :) Lots of info there.

Real quick though, I use Osram GD+, warm whites, royal blues and 660nm reds.

Space inside is less than 2 sq foot, I think.

Hey guys, thanks!

Tex, this pheno looks basically done at 7 weeks, though 8 seems better. I took another sample last night and still no pronounced couch lock high. A trippy head high is still getting better though, so I won't chop yet.

One more thing: Had to do a bit more smell control this morning as my internal fan was circulating air out of the cracks in my case (the ones closest to the fan) and also through the heatsink fins and out the intake fan enclosure. In theory this should not happen, but it was happening. My guess is because my exhaust fan is turned to the lowest setting, it doesn't pull very hard and the internal air circulation overpowers it.

I removed the intake fan on top of the heatsink, sealed everything up, and turned up the internal fan to blow at/through the heatsink fins toward the filter exhaust. This actually works surprisingly well. It might get a little too toasty in the summer but now it's a comfy 75-78 inside.

While I'm waiting on harvest (won't be long now!) I thought I'd share with you my experience with different types of activated carbon during the smelliest part of the run when odor control is most critical.

Carbon is rated as mesh size, the first number being the size mesh the particles fall through; the second number being where they don't fall through. Basically the larger the number, the smaller each piece of carbon is. In air applications, the larger the particle size allows greater airflow but a thicker bed must be used. Smaller particles offer greater performance at the expense of airflow.

Pictured below are three types of carbon (left to right) first being a 4x8 coconut carbon mesh for air phase applications, next is 8x16 coconut from the same company, and last is common aquarium charcoal carbon, which I've used for most of my grows.

My carbon bed depth is only 0.8" with one 50 cfm pc fan pulling through. When using 4x8 carbon, airflow was amazing but it only scrubbed about 80% of the smell. Switching to 8x16 restricted airflow but overall gave superior performance over the aquarium charcoal, scrubbing 100% of the odor and allowing greater airflow. You can see it's just slightly smaller and more uniform in size. It's also much less dusty. I can see myself using the larger carbon during the summer and in early flower, when lower temps are needed and the smell is not so intense.

Testing a sample last night confirmed that this pheno has a strong sativa influence with a long lasting, trippy, accelerating head high that takes 10-15 minutes to fully assert itself. Taste in the vaporizer is lavender/floral with a finish of skunky fuel that sticks to your mouth and any facial hair. With no tolerance to it, the high lingers into the next morning if smoked late at night.

She stacks and stacks until week 7, then just sits and gets fat. 8/9 weeks here, respectively.
