Bicep Torn...

T

toughmudderdave

...on my left arm. Completely separated at the elbow with a loud "POP". Happened last Saturday and I had surgery Wednesday evening. The procedure was successful and we expect a full recovery....but I can't lift for 3 months...ugh.

When the doc told us that, Seamaiden shot me a glance 'cuz I suppose I can get a bit..."overzealous" when it comes to exercise...heh. But I'll be good. I want a full recovery so I can get back into it.

Maybe you should hobble over to the OLD Stoners area, and take a rest, lol

Sounds painful, Dave. Hope you heal up alright, dewd. At least you got the Seamaiden to help out while you get better!

I fucked up my bicep about a year ago moving logs. I didn't need surgery as mine was only a tear no separation. Same thing tho, an audible pop then a jerk like I was electrocuted. I cringe just thinking about it.

What sucks is that this type of injury can affect anyone. I've been a serious weight lifter for 8 years, one careless movement and it kicked me back years. I dont have the same strength I had in that arm before it happened. I can lift weights again but I still favor my right arm now as my left has a tendency to cramp.

Drag dude, connective tissue is never the same after something like that. Good luck man. Peace GS
Well, I'm looking to fully recover and come back stronger. Jay Cutler won his last Mr. Olympia after a tear as did Dorian Yates. It is definitely a setback in more ways than one, but it won't stop me, that much is certain. :)

Be careful. As GS said, the equipment is never the same. I'm looking at my fourth shoulder surgery.

Cool man, as I said I wish you the best. I would wonder, if you talked with Cutler and Yates, if they would ever say they were 100% after that.

I messed my back a bunch of years ago. While in an occupational therapy program, they decided I was back to 100 % because I could dead lift 180 lbs. Apparently that is beyond what they consider the average person should do and therefore I was 100%. Not mentioning I could do 250 easy before. Rehab sucks. Peace GS

I think with the proper training routine depending on the severity of the case you can restore some what normal strength and shape.

Just remember, as much as it sucks to take it slow. You realize how much your arm turns to mush after a few months of light use. When I first lifted weights after my accident 20lbs was challenging.

Hah! Between my back & knees and his arm, we should be able to cobble together an actual hoomen bean.

good thread ... puts some perspective on how much weight training i should want to do. i.e. not all that much. 1lb of muscle per year is my goal -- at age 64. a gram a day. just enough to keep moving forward and not be slipping backward.

The irony here, BudToaster, is that Dave wasn't doing any training or heavy lifting when it happened. And that's the lesson, too, which is to pay attention. He was moving a television, a stupid tv. Just like when I tore out my ACL, I was just stepping out of the back of the truck, I wasn't doing anything strenuous or playing sports, I was just stepping out.

I am amazed that being as how the bone had to be drilled (his ulna, IIRC) he's not experiencing anything close to the kind of pain I experienced post-op.

All that said, at your age, I think yours is a very good goal and certainly reasonable. It's important not to get too thin once you hit a certain age, as my mom puts it.

I keep thinking about myself in the "at your age" realm, too, BT. No offense intended, I apologize.

Sucks. As a Crossfitter...I have had my share of injuries. My lower back is stubborn..and likes to get nice and tight after heavy deadlifting. My shoulders get tweaky from prior injuries when I was younger...and I would lift improperly. Stretching and mobility is probably more important than the actual workout. Unfortunately...the only way I learned about that was by actually injuring myself.

Hope your arm feels better TMD!
