Is it safe to use Wi-Fi @ library?

B

BluEyeDevil

Hello.
Currently I use this mobile device to visit ICMAG.
Its kinda a pita..due to the tiny keyboard, tiny text and long loading times.
So I'd like to take my laptop to the library and surf ICMAG.

Good idea,not so good?

Your thoughts..

Thanks..

Why wouldn't it be is the question I have?

It's not illegal to look at a website bud. Well at least not this one it's not

Well I would also be uploading photos.
I go to the local library about 3x's a week..checking out movies,CD's the occasional book.
I bring my laptop sometimes to update the OS.
but I always get a feeling there's an office somewhere in the basement that a couple people sit and monitor interweb activity..
I looked over the tou that the library has.
states they respect privacy, but the same time condones illegal activity and would have no problem with handing over information.

Hummm good question here in Canada it's legal to visit the site but would that pull a red flag. I know on the Library's computer there is a tou contract that should state that you can't use the computer for illegal purposes but would icmag fall under those guildlines? I'm assuming you could visit the site but not sure about purchasing seeds.. There are camera's all over the libary so for that I might not use it for getting seeds but for going on the site sure why not. headband 707

Accessing ICMAG isn't the problem, just the security/privacy of logging in and uploads is my concern.
I was using the local Burger king..but they eventually but a block up..that's fine..there coffee sucks and the flame broiled crud made my stomach turn.

id be careful, there are a lot of Packet sniffers, and since you do not have control of their router, switches etc, you have no clue what information is actually going through there server unencrypted. Or easly Decryption. Only because im super paranoid, i like to cross my T's and dot my Eyes, learn about protocols, and the different 802.11 G and N. WPA2 seems to be sufficient enough encryption. New computers have Mac addresses pretty much in them, its really easy to find someone now adays. but hacking has gotten harder.

Its just about not letting some snooper get your information... because you never know what they will do with it. or why they are snooping... I live in a small populated place were detectives are very prevalent. so im always watching my ass.

Another suggestion would be download or buy something like hide my IP, so you can use a proxy. or learn on proxies. As most forums have one way or another to Log your IP, but if your not at home, it wont matter... but it can point back to your city, which could be close enough.

FYI Mobile Android is a OPEN SOURCE operating system. Hacking is REALLY easy on phones etc. i reccomend people keeping off phones and other operating systems other than those you know and trust. same as your browser.

And update your Operating System and BIOS! And any drivers and SOFTWARE which may have exploits.

I could get into router settings but that does not pertain here.

You can surf ICMAG from a Library but you'll never feel comfortable doing it. I definitely wouldn't upload any photo's of pot!

I've worked in Libraries for many years, and if you're a regular customer they're going to be curious why you are there, especially if you fit any profile.

Libraries are boring places to work in and attract nosy workers who feel a need to police the place.

Seriously, you could get away with it for awhile but you would be better off surfing from a bookstore cafe.:tiphat:

Keep a second tab like police chief magazine open so if someone starts wandering by just click on that tab and they see you looking at police bullshit...

Humm very interesting you say this as I was forced to use these cafes when I was traveling and I did not feel safe in them at all lol. Let me tell you why.. First they are all hooked up to Google which has google seach on it which means I can look at the history of the last persons on this machine I'm on. I sat down on a puter only to pull up the last person's very strange computer sex whatever.. lol.. I could see what each person had done on each computer so I would not feel safe on a cafe puter with camera in the cafe. headband 707:tiphat:

Its really hard to believe that the library is not monitoring its internet use. You didn't mention how you are accessing the internet. Do you just flip the mobile and you 're good to go!?!
In my library only library members have access to the internet. In order to gain access, one has to log in to his library account via a "captive portal" All internet activities are logged individually per user, as stated on the warning labels next to the computers and on the walls for security reasons. Also there are ccd's everywhere!!! You should always assume that the public computer inside a library has a remote monitoring software installed so they can watch your monitor remotely. This is typical for schools and Unis and is no secret!

Always use https:// to connect to icmag

You should learn how to use Tor It is the safest way to access the internet at the moment although it is not 100% safe! Again it is very important you learn how to properly use it.

Avoid at all cost accessing e-mail through public computers unless you feel confident and safe about the environment they are in.

If you use Tor on a public access wifi and you get banned from it or somebody approach you and demand some explanations of what you have been doing on the internet , I would say this is clear evidence your activities have been monitored.

I hope i didn't scare you but this is real life my friend!

Peace! :tiphat:

Before comuters. the government use to watch certain books, like The catcher and the Rye, due to possible criminal behavor or just plan characterizing people. i think that has been going on a VERY long time.

I was in a similar situation with my first computer....no ISP

I made a list of Wi-fi hotspots and leached off neighboring signals

Save yourself the waste to time. Tether your phone or spend $30 a month on an ISP

I'm pretty sure that list has grown quite a bit since then :drum:

edit:
However that should not deter people from going to the library. Library is a fun and useful place to be in.

WOW has it come to this? Have our Libraries also become our guardians of their truth? Public knowledge indeed lol lol.. headband 707

How are you dealing with the DNS server? This seems to come up all the time in my computer. I do download lots and lots of music.. I'm hoping this is where it's coming from.(cough ,cough) Getting pretty tired of seeing it.I would not use a phone either ,,headband 707:)

Im not quit sure what your question is, about DNS. I have mine disabled but now you have me researching this one. i believe most DNS will be a automatic 192.168.2.1 type of address. something in your local area network. Usually given by a router, which takes care of all that. i always recommend a GOOD ass router. Wireless is always going to be risky. the safest is to just plug right into Ethernet cable, because then the only way they can track you is through hard wire, assuming you have NO wifi on your Modem.

If you would like to get into modem Settings i would love too. Its so important, and so many people dont even change these settings, so they are set to default. Which anyone Network knowledgeable person ( alot more than you think) know the IP address or website to get onto your ROUTER, and then KNOWS default passwords that need to be set. Not Your SSID password, but your actual router password. And i always recommend using Numbers, Capitals, and accomyms like #%(@)_! etc. if allowed. As it is easy for hackers to get simple passwords. A lot to security, but you will fell safer when you get educated. kinda like growing marijuana.

WPA2 EPA Standards for 802.11N, 802.11 G seems easy to HACK. Old Standards. seem to be OK, and have a good encryption, but can always be hacked if someone really wants your information.

I recommend a Software that will Encrypt your WHOLE hard drive. Its called TrueCrypt. Just follow instructions, its FREE. It may slow down your system a little bit because it has to Encrypt and Decry pt when sending out information.

But if you have a fast system. you wont notice it much. Not for a Gaming system. You can also CHOOSE what to Encrypt. so maybe you can leave gaming alone? i dont know. I have not notice a damn thing.

If your legal awesome. You shouldn't worry to much. If you are pushing the limits or live in a non marijuana friendly area, and your LEO seems to have nothing to do. Protect yourself.

Its common sense. Just like putting down the blinds before you smoke bud. You should be protecting your Network from everything from Hackers, friends, girlfriends, you would be Fucking surprised at the asshole hackers. which is why i became a advocate of shutting down these bitches.

Noise mo fos.

Always be on the Up and Up.

Imagen if your neighbors are Sniffing Packets, and see your pot plants. Boom, now you just told someone, which breaks the number one rule. Tell no one LOL.

two more things. MAC spoofing, dont let anyone get your MAC address, especially from your computer.

Now go to Start, type CMD in search and type in IPCONFIG /all and see what all your info says... DNS too.... If you need any personal help, just P.M. me.

great thread. I was thinking of going to a local book store to post pics..because I really want to share. What would you guys recommend. A laptop...what kind of software...do I keep all photos on a decrypted hard drive...or a thump drive with encryption(expensive?)?

Can I post pictures from my home..using tor?

Is it possible to post pics as a guest here on icmag? How do you do it?
