What's new

Welcome to my jungle...

Hello folks, i have been a while in this wonderful forum and i thought it would be good to start a journal because i have noticed that there are many helpful people here :thank you:.

I have done 2 grows in the past with mediocre results (0.4-0.5 grams/watt). This time i thought i should give vertical a try considering it as a way to boost my yields among the rest.

Setup

I have a growtent that is 3x3x9.5 feet high (it was 3x3x6 but i modified it a bit).
I have 3 bulbs stacked in it. 1x250w CFL 2700 K, 1x250w HPS, 1x400w HPS. I have been using 1x4"RVK Fan (extracting 330m3/h) for the two HPS bulbs that are cooltubed.
I also use 2x4" RVK Fans for the exhaust of my growtent. I have 1xCarbon filter and planning on buying a second one soon.

Strains

The reason i have a tent so tall is because i have 3 babies growing for 3.5-4 months now (from the smallest to the oldest one). The strains i am growing are:

1)Acapulco Gold (6 feet high)
2)California Dream (6.5 feet high)
3)Original Skunk #1 (5.5 feet high)

In terms of height i am ok but keeping them away from the bulbs is a pain in the ass (especially considering their lower parts with the 250w CFL next to them...). I tie them extensively, still i have lost quite a few leaves because of them burning by the bulbs.

Growing Medium+Feeding

I am using Biobizz potting soil (Biobizz All-Mix 50%+Biobizz Light-Mix 30%+Perlite 20%).

I have changed 3 different brands of fertilizers during these 4 months. Biobizz, Atami, and now GH Floranova-Bloom. I am currently using the Lucas Formula considering Floranova.

Usually i give them feedings of 1000-1100 PPM's. I have an EC meter+PH meter to check the runoff of my soil. Up until recently i was feeding them until runoff was at 1250-1300 PPM. I recently lowered feeding a bit keeping it at 1100-1200 PPM.

They have some burnt tips, new growth seems ok, they are growing a bit slowly (that's what i want, they are already very tall, i have the time regimen set to 15/9).

Problems

I don't know where to begin with...I made a short list of them:

1)Temperature

I started this grow at 15 April with Acapulco Gold. California Dream was started at 1 May and Original Skunk #1 at 15 May. I don't have an a/c, so keeping temps to the safe side was a pain in the ass. I got 2 air coolers to help me, they managed to keep temps to 85-90 F, 60%+ humidity...I removed them recently.... Temps are sitting at 87-90 F and RH is at 30%.

2)Insects

I got a thrips infestation, fought it with neem+pyrethrum at the beginning, it slowed them down but those fuckers keep coming back. I then got to buying Spinosad but i was finally not able to get it. Recently i used Imidacloprid, hope i will kiss these bastards goodbye.
I am also thinking on using Abamectin as precaution, because with the use of Imid spider-mites get more favourable conditions (still did not have any but you never know...)

3)Root issues

I have the same soil for 4 months now, with the watering from time to time it has receded and i sometimes can see some of the roots of my babies when i am watering. They are not bright white, they have a darker white color, they don't smell or anything like that, still i am suspicious...Ordered Ridomil and maybe later i will add beneficials such as GHE Subculture...

Does anyone know if it's ok to use beneficials it in the case that i have used Ridomil in my soil before or if it is nescessary at all?
Member Avant Gardener was kind enough to provide me with info on the subject, i thank him very much.

4)Overfeeding

From time to time i had runoff that got to 1400 PPM. I have read that i should aim for about 1000 PPM at veg stage, still considering the age of the plants and how they respond to feeding i thought they needed a bit more. If someone has any experience with plants being in the veg phase for that long considerig their food i would like to hear it.

I have posted some pics with sick leaves, would like any input.

5)Underwatering

There were times that plants got severly underwatered, all their leafs wilted very badly. 1 hour after watering they would get back to normal. Each time Acapulco Gold seemed to be losing many leaves that are getting dry because of this situation. There are still many leaves of it that are getting dried up and dying.

6)Bulb proximity to plants

Things to do

I am waiting for weather to get a bit cooler and fight the thrips problem before i switch them to flower. I also have to buy a second carbon filter and cover all sides of my growtent to be light-proof (i don't have a light in my bedroom where the growtent is, but i want to be extra careful). I am giving them 1 week max before i switch them to flower.

This sums it up, i would love to hear anything considering my grow :tiphat:.

Some photos (not all plants can be seen because of the way the lights are put).

Hey Billy, thanks for your kind words dude!! In my previous 2 grows i faced problems but not so intense and persisting (i had PH problems, not insects, bad temps yada yada). This grow has taken me quite a while, i could be harvesting by now and my babies have not even gotten into flowering!!

Hope this time my efforts pay off, otherwise i will be very disappointed. In my 3rd grow i think i undersand how things work with fertilization etc (still burning my babies here and there but whatever....). Today i watered Original Skunk #1. I gave it only water, runoff was at 800 PPM, so i gave it a bit Floranova-Bloom after that getting it to 1100. I also used some GHE Mineral Magic containing silica. Is 1100 PPM too little for a plant 3.5 months old?

PH came out at 7.5 at the beginning, instead of watering with plenty of water to get it to 6.8-7 i took a fork, cultivated the soil a bit and poured 20 grams of Dolomite Lime in the soil. I then watered a bit more and got it to 7, being happy. Also gave it some Imid, i did not see any bugs coming out of the soil as i was watering, in contrast to previous times. I am afraid of spider-mites too, gonna order Abamectin soon before i put them to flower. i don't like chemicals (that nasty smell!!!) and i certainly don't want to use them during flowering, that's why it takes so long to flower them (besides hot temps).

damn bro, you were right about the jungle part.

never seen a tent so messy. haha.

what are you yielding from this?

also what is the point of the HPS at the top with very little flowers around it?

everything looks backwards.

Ha ha ha, its messy indeed :p. I don't know how much i am gonna yield from this, i know that plants will reach about 2.8 meters. I have a CFL at the bottom and 2xHPS higher. The CFL+250w HPS cover about 1x1 m. And the 400w HPS covers another 1x1 meter.

The 400w HPS is the bulb that has been put higher is about to cover the stretching of the plants, their top 1 meter overall. Why does it look backwards? The tops of the plants yield the most, so i put the strongest light on top.

Smiling Ilikeweed21-those gonna be lots more wild, then 12-12-Dont understand-what you are meaning, then you says-you can see the roots,at your babies, then watering. Is it in the bottom,at the pots,or the top of them ?..thinking about,IF possible,i would think about repot, before 12-12 or a week after mabye-bigger pots, more soil-notneed for watering,so often then. They gonna be BIG,so if you can gives them more space for roots,i would do those-roots will still grow after 12-12,for about 2-3 weeks, before stops grows.
For 3 times grow-perfect !! You will learn much and have already learned much-mabye you soon, can starting take away, some of the lowest big leafs ? lesser places, there trips and mites and so,can stay at-therefore-incrase them,a bit.Easyer,to keep eyes, with stems and so..Wishing you best luck with your Ladyes-and please-get them lighttight-No Hermies good : ) You will get much weed, then finish,im sure of..
Grow them good Sir-will watching over your shoulder.Into your Jungle .
Green luck.

ilike, the top bulb just looks too high, maybe it is just the picture!

have you ever tried to position your lights horizontally in this tent? or just vertical?

you should figure out a way to get all of your lights inline to save space.. :D

Bro, thank you very much for the encouragement you provide me with!! :). I can see the root at the top of the soil when i am watering. At first the pots were filled with soil up to their top. Irrigation caused the soil to recede with time, i am gonna buy a pack of Light-Mix 20 lt and cover them good again.

I have them in 7 gallon smartpots bro, they are not supposed to be root-bound in smartpots, especially smartpots that big. I know that we need 1 gallon of growing medium for each month of plant's life, these plants will be harvested at about 6 months after they were planted.

I am gonna follow your advice on the lowest leafs, besides, they are burned by the CFL in some spots. Still haven't made it completely lighttight because i have to hang the second carbon filter and replace the 400w bulb. I know 12-12 is going to be a pain in the ass, will do my best to control the situation.

Thank you my friend, i appreciate your help a lot, wish you the best too!!! :)

Yeah, it was a bit too high, i lowered it considerably after your remark dude :).Still haven't turned it on, i am waiting for temps to get a bit cooler. All lights are vertically put in the growtent. I need to straighten them a bit more and find a duct tape that will keep them connected for more than 2 days in a row.

I have attached a small duct pipe between the two cooltubes, otherwise they won't stay connected. And the air intake of the cooltubes is another thing that bothers me, i don't want them to suck air from my growtent because i would need a third carbon filter that way.

Space is precious in my growtent, i am doing my best to preserve it, otherwise the plants will grow into the light!! (have missed some bud sites that way already).

I think they are already way too tall for that tent if they aren't already blooming and done with stretch. now that is a jungle! Personally if they haven't started blooming, I would take cuttings and bloom them in a 12/12 lighting schedule after they are a foot or two tall.

Yeah bro, that's why i think there is very little possibility that this could happen with those smarties. In fact i think i should have used 5 gal pots to not get that tall, it would restrict their height a bit i believe. Hope we stay in touch :tiphat:

They still have to cover the space around the 400w lamp and i am there to tie them all the time if needed be. They have been in 15/9 for quite some time now (about 1 month) and they have stretched a lot, i have noticed that when i gradually use less hours of light in veg, they stretch less in flower. These come from my little experience, could be totally wrong. I don't have the space or equipment to grow clones my friend.

I fucked up a bit with quotes, and don't know how to delete my double post. Sorry guys...:shucks:

Today i replaced the 400w bulb (or so i thought) and went to take a nap. When i woke up i could hear a buzzing sound coming from my growroom. I went to check it out and it was the ballast of course. It turns out that the idiots at the growshop had given me a 600w bulb instead of a 400w. I am gonna return it today.

I fixed the cooltubes a bit better, covering more space, and put some plastic netting in the front of my growtent,, so that future buds don't touch the mylar, don't know i did right or wrong, you can see it in the pics, i would like a second opinion on whether i should keep it or not.

IMG_0248.jpg

The cutting on the mylar door on the upper frame is because i had to do it to remove the bulb and put back my old one (grrr). Gonna buy some velcro so i don't have to duct tape it each time.

IMG_0249.jpg
AA bit closer view. What do you think about the netting on this side, should i remove it?

And not only that bro, i had ordered Ridomil Gold 48 SL and they sent me Ridomil Gold 68 WG instead!!Wtf, i will have to postpone flowering for some extra days...:(

Hello, today i added the second carbon filter, got another 400w bulb and replaced the older one too. I also fixed any light leaks that the tent had as well as ducting. Got some Biobizz soil, added to the top of the pots where it was missing. I also added GHE Subculture with my watering, hope trichoderma will give to the roots of my babies a boost! Last but not least, i sprinkled dolomite lime in the soil, it keeps PH at ~7.

Yesterday i watered Acapulco Gold and California Dream.

Acapulco Gold PPM after runoff: 1200
California Gold PPM after runoff:1150

All the leaves have slightly burnt tips, many of them are curling down, i am suspecting Imidacloprid must have burned them, PPM of nutes was higher in the past and i did not face that problem. I am gonna water Original Skunk #1 tomorrow and get them to flower at LAST!!

Photos to come later...
