There is an interesting study being done right now in England I believe it's in Cambridge if I rememeber this right. Anyways a doctor female had a baby and was unable to get back to the weight she was prior. She decided to look further into this and found that it was indeed the chemicals "WE" had been pouring into everything that has been keeping ppl "FAT" screwing with ppl's hormons etc. The deeper she looked the worse it got. The study is still going on..I just caught the last of it so don't ask me who and where is this study I don't have it headband 707

Belly fat is bad fat...true. It should not be acceptable and is controllable. If there is belly fat on you...something is not right with your diet or exercise regiment.

I believe it. I've been doing a lot of reading, learning and discovering due to my own inability to lose weight as I used to be able to, and I've since learned that it is/was due to being menopausal and hormone imbalanced. I've worked to restrict those endocrine disruptors, such as fabric softeners (but not nail polishes and removers, I like hiding the dirt under my nails with polish too much) and the like that our environment is now richly contaminated by.

It's a matter of perspective and quality of life, bombadil. We're not talking about colds, flus, the typical annual illnesses most everyone experiences.

We're talking about the kind of serious, life-threatening conditions that are not only entirely preventable, but seriously affect not only the suffer's quality of life, but that of those around them. These conditions also prematurely shorten lives, are you down with that, because I'm not. We know people who've had heart attacks in their 30s.

As an example (and perhaps this will help folks understand why Dave is the way he is) we'll use diabetes and its effects, which include blindness, propensity to life-threatening infection, and loss of function due to circulatory issues. This can lead to horrible effects that seriously shorten a person's life and affect their quality of life, which is what this is really about. His mother is an uncontrolled diabetic, and at the relatively young age of 70 she's going into skilled nursing. This after becoming effectively blind many, many years ago and having just had a below-the-knee amputation due to an uncontrolled infection that began in her foot and moved into the bones. The condition of her home after several days of this and her not being able to see that she was tracking blood all over was not very nice. You just don't get those effects from typical illnesses.

Have you known anyone, have you experienced what it's like for a diabetic who goes blind, or loses a limb (amputation)? How about the repeated infections that turn them into demented jerks who hallucinate? Ever seen that from your typical cold, flu, childhood illnesses? Because I haven't.

Are you into shortening your life? Do you want to look and feel as though you're 90yo when you're only 65yo? I'm not, nor am I into diminishing the quality of my life. The occasional illnesses I've suffered don't have effects that last the rest of my life, nor have they prematurely shortened it.

THIS!!!!....Yes, I am vehement about diet and fitness. I know I'm repeating what Seamaiden is saying, but I look at BOTH my parents who are both in their early 70s and are aged WAAAAAAY beyond their years....because of lifestyle choices.

I know choices in lifestyle won't prevent illness and aging, but it most certainly will mitigate it. I fully intend to be running marathons when I'm my parents' ages....not hobbling around on a prosthetic limb waiting for someone to get me to the toilet.

People must take responsibility for their own health. It's as simple as that. Doctors are not going to make your health better. No health care plan will help you.

It takes no sort of genius to look at the food choices and understand...that those are very important elements in overall health (or lack of). You are what you eat....very true. Put shit in...and well..your health and performance will suffer. It may be cheaper at the grocery store...but not really...as you will be paying the costs later.

A constant intake of good water...yup...there you go. Good food...good water.....get off your asses and move around. Get off the tit of consumerism. Processed foods will kill you...in the most ugly of ways.

Health is probably the most important aspect to living. Once health goes...the fun ends. All the money in the world will not buy it...or replace it.

* that being said....I train for the last crust of bread. It's a competitive world out there.

seamaniden, I agree with you up to a point... why up to a point? there's many serious illnesses that people develop without having been at fault with diet or lack of excercise.

just last week I went to eat supper at a co-wroker's house, all his family was there; his dad lost an eye and only sees 50% with the other left due to diabetes. He told me he never liked sweets and ate sweets rarely, never even put sugar in his coffee... now that he's a full blown diabetic, he loves sweets (crazy, uh?), and sometimes goes out of his diet and eats cake and stuff of the sort. the doctor told him he got diabetes probably because of genetics and not because of diet...

also, my dad eats everything he likes, drinks what he likes, smokes cuban cigars, he does not excercise much now, but he used to swim a few days a week... no one believes he is his age, everyone thinks he's in his 60s when actually he's close to 80. he's very very clear headed and sharp. and everyone always gives him shit about his diet which he has always had. he never gives a fuck though.

I can't explain this away with simple solutions like 'diet and excercise'.

in the last two years after I stopped working as a mountain guide and having a 'lil gorila grow here and there, I've put on weight, but have been eating the same... green lentils, beans, rice, tons of fruits, salads, red meat and a little chicken and fish. also chocolate, love it :D that's basically what I eat, and always out-performed anyone in the mountain except for a few naturally gifted peeps that I concluded were aliens since they could eat shit and still kick my ass in resistance and distance; some of them even smoked ciggies. could never figured it out.

also seen peeps smoke a joint laced with heroin and rock-climb and out-perform all the healthy guys as well as the steroid taking guys...

I stand somewhere in the middle... my personal belief is that when the big boss upstairs says your time is up, you're done, no diet or excercise or lack of will save you.

peace

You don't have to develop diabetes just from sweets. He could have been eating a lot of white rice and bread. Your father might not eat a lot of processed foods and drink alcohol and smoke in moderate amounts as those things help keep you living long and healthy which brings me to my point. Also, the swimming helped his body stay efficient as it is a mix of resistance and endurance training and the younger you do exercise the more the benefit as you get older.

I think it is the oils and the high amounts of sugars( high fructose and other forms) in foods that is making it hard to lose weight. Most oils are refined, unless stated it's not, and the nutrients needed to help our body process the fat are removed and since our bodies can't break down all the fat it goes to the adipose tissue and hence you get fat. I really think butter, clarified butter, avocado, and nuts and seeds are what people should be eating for their fats unless you're frying a piece of meat that takes long to fry or doing a deep fry but for everything else most oils aren't good again unless it's states it's unrefined and that includes cold press olive oil as I found out it goes through a process that removes certain substances.
