EDIT: I am conditioned now to run 10 miles of hills in triple digits and not need to drink. I couldn't do that last year. I'm learning more..how to nose breathe and calm/slow my body rate down through breathing exercises...as I run. To concentrate on breathing is to be present. Try it...you will see what I mean. Concentrate on breathing.

for sure, focused breathing is the key especially to will mind over matter... you can always push just a little bit further... then a little further etc.

my best routine was 6 miles in about 45 min then 1,000 push ups and 1,000 crunches every night... I was 155 lb.'s and could bench over 300 lb.'s.

now I would be lucky to do a single mile below 8 minutes... I could do it, but would pay!

more about running

more about running

On the outer fringes of some building cells..they kept circling my path..it seems dodging me...though I got their down pushes..and stages where the drainages were so very muggy...the air thick and still

This one was building around me when I started

I went the opposite way...up into these hills. Nice and rocky...flowering Red Shank through White Sages...from brush into timber...technical single track

So pain...this annoying pain. You can be creative and make something out of your pain...or you can crumble down to wallow in it. Either way...you will suffer.

This cramp I get...I can stretch it...or push it with my fingers and a hip twist...but it must be kept off my hip joint. If it gets on top of or in front of my hip joint...it tightens up my leg...stresses my knee..so I can't lift my knee straight up.

Today..I could actually feel the cord of cramp....felt like an artery..kept using my fingers to knead it off my joint...keep it in my left ass muscle...where it was easier to run on.

Felt good...went a hilly 13 mile...mid 80s....humid..carried no water. I judge progress in my overall conditioning...by the comfort and lack of things I need to torture myself. A couple bean burritos and some gatorade 1/2ed with water...can get me many miles

I don't do any ab work at all...used to though. Trail running is so much dependent on core. I've found that I have no need for crunches or any of that. I do dips, pull ups, and push ups. I think I did a total of 150 push ups on today's run. Clean..form push ups.

Used to be a gym rat...hardly ever touch weights now though. I have not weighed myself...but I'm probably at 150-155 (at 5' 7")...getting close to Iggy Pop body fat. Lean but not weak.

I'm not fast....but my strength is in recovery. I have great recovery. T is for tenacious....I'll make efforts to run anything down...be it..another runner or a mountain biker. The faster I run...the more in the moment I am....it's a free feeling.

You ever try a paleo diet? I'm blending ideas from a few different places and trying to work out something that keeps me fueled, doesn't require too much energy from my body to digest and checks off all the necessary inputs. I've taken to feeding myself like I feed my plants, giving it all the nutrients it needs in sufficient amounts and nothing more. Felt silly treating my plants so good and my body like shit. Had to reconcile that conflict.

I don't do free weights anymore, or even bother with the gym. A 25 lb Kettlebell and body weight exercises are my main stays. Hindu squats, leg lifts, push ups, pull ups, swim kicks.

Spot on about breathing. Such a crucial, yet simple, act. Benefits go well beyond exercising. My old man taught me to breath through the nose, something he picked up from tae kwon do. It's such a calming influence on your body. Helps falling asleep too, 3 deep & slow right when you lay down.

I really feel pain is mind over matter, cliche as it may be. Early on you learn, if you push yourself, that a 2nd (or 5th) wind takes you far beyond where you thought you could go. Once you experience that it carries over and you know your perceived limit is really an illusion. If only my ankle pain was an illusion, they hurt like it's real. Ice baths work wonders.

Once you experience that it carries over and you know your perceived limit is really an illusion. If only my ankle pain was an illusion, they hurt like it's real. Ice baths work wonders.

First off...I have to tell you specifically...I'm back on the ice cream. No other dairy...but I'm not giving up Vanilla ice cream. I eat an entire pint of Haagen-Dazs Vanilla after almost every run. Fuck it...I'm not pure...I sin like that

I don't research diets...but I'm looking at a balance between hunter gatherer (wild game) and the veggie/fruit gardens. I can't survive on just my garden...nor do I want to. I can eat only so much out of the garden. Crock pot of pinto beans for burritos...and occasional peanut butter sandwich....but mostly...my running food is the beans.

I plan to take up hunting...and I'm not past harvesting garden rabbits via air gun. Come September....I'll be harvesting out of the bunny population. The deer tags...might have to wait...because I haven't figured out what kind of bow I want. Never hunted with a bow. Also want a black powder Hawkins .50 for the single week season we have. I don't want to hunt rifle season...bad enough I run out there then. Scary how far those bullets go

Trail running is leading me to hunting...I see it as a progression into something else.

Diet is everything...when everything is working great...I promise you...foods are at the core. Feeling good need not be such an insane task. Eat well...get out and move around....pretty damn simple imo. O and drink shit loads of water...80% water...drink water...even simpler

Training alone...man...you have to be an animal. It's a lonely world out there...no boss telling you to push yourself. Self motivation...where ever I can dig it out of...anger...the peace..the noise...the silence...it's essential to draw it out. I don't fuck off...hardly ever...if teenage gymnasts can land on a balance beam with broken toes....I can go out and kick the shit out of myself. I think about shit like that. If I fall...I get pissed and go harder. R is for relentless...I am...I don't stop

Breathing to come out of desperation madness...to come back to the calm...to shut down the mind's voice. The mind will fuck you every time if you listen to it. I breathe to bring myself back...get a fucking grip on the pain. When I'm breathing correctly...running is an effortless flow of being one with creation. I live for those moments...when I can stay in them forever...I'll be ready for the next world. I believe that

Keep Running...Carry Some Mag Oil along and Use It

Keep Running...Carry Some Mag Oil along and Use It

This cramp I get...I can stretch it...or push it with my fingers and a hip twist...but it must be kept off my hip joint. If it gets on top of or in front of my hip joint...it tightens up my leg...stresses my knee..so I can't lift my knee straight up.

Today..I could actually feel the cord of cramp....felt like an artery..kept using my fingers to knead it off my joint...keep it in my left ass muscle...where it was easier to run on.

In addition to fine herb for pain-relief and relaxation, Liquid Magnesium Chloride, also nicknamed "Magnesium Oil", is amazing for relaxing spasm and tight muscles and loosening arthritic joints. You cannot use too much. Just don't put it on open pores, like right after a shower or working out and sweating.

Magnesium is involved in over 300 metabolic pathways in the body and a magnesium deficiency can cause one pathway to fault and domino to others. A healthy cell is high in magnesium and low in calcium. Many, many Westerners are just the opposite and their arteries, hearts, and joints show it.

"Ancient Minerals" brand, the purest magnesium extracted from magnesium layers in an ancient underground seabed 5,000 feet below the Netherlands, can be found online. They also offer a Magnesium Gel that is mostly identical to the Oil except that it has the added attraction of an 200:1 Aloe Vera concentrate by Aloe Corp that is an extract of only specific-sized healing molecules. Aloe Corp has the patent on it. The gel is made for skin issues such as psoriasis or eczema.

I use a neck-down spray every other day. I spray on 40-50 spray pumps from my head down to my toes, avoiding the crotch and a-hole, leave it on for 15-20 minutes, and shower it off with my morning shower. I make sure to put at least 10 pumps on my head, rub into my scalp, and on my upper-neck-just-under-the-hair area (the sub-occipital muscles that feel like bumps at the base of your skull, are actually muscles overlaying it and attached to your shoulder blades in the middle of your back). Total amount is 1/2 ounce and equals 1500 mg straight into my muscles and bloodstream. Orally, you'd have diarrhea by ingesting 500 mg and only actually absorb perhaps 150 mg. Through the skin, "transdermal", is the relaxation bomb.

It is excellent for a hangover and many folks have reduced or totally eliminated their history of migraines by using it daily on the head, temples, and neck. My wife is one who accomplished this after a history of monthly migraines since she was 12 years old.

If left on the skin too long Mag Oil tends to itch, sting, or burn, not for everyone but enough people have issues this way that the spray-on, wash-off method seems best. Never apply it after a run, a hot shower, or a workout - it's 3 times saltier than the ocean and it will feel like salt in a wound. Use it before your workout or as an emergency remedy during it. Alternately, if you want to apply it and leave it on, just cover it with a pure natural oil like Jojoba or Coconut. 15-20 minutes is all it takes to get into your bloodstream, bypassing the liver and gut, thus avoiding the laxative effect folks get when they take too much magnesium orally (remember that Milk of Magnesia is meant to do this).

The pain relief of Mag Oil combined with a good smoke is astounding. I have seen 80 year-old arthritic hands loosen and play banjo again within 5 minutes of application. The man was crying in joy. If he had had a nice smoke as well I'm sure he would have thought we were medicine men or something special. Often it's merely the tools at hand that save the day.

I've been into natural health products since 1969 and must tell you that mag Oil is one of the single most significant items I have ever found and included in my life. I turn others onto it all the time and create happy converts. Bad backs, hands that are perpetually tight, and cramps from physical over-exertion are perfect targets. I wake up in the night sometimes with a total spasm in my calf (Charlie Horse), the kind that makes you cry and that cannot be massaged out. Oral magnesium, like Peter Gilliam's tasty magnesium citrate powder drink "Calm", releases the spasm in about 15 minutes. Spraying just 5 pumps of mag oil on my calf and it's released in 3-5 minutes. Totally gone in 5-7 minutes.

I build flagstone patios as a hobby, heavy fucking 2" slabs of flag, and I pick out in the wild and lift a lot of rocks when assembling a dry-stack rock wall. My calves somehow take the brunt...or is it a the tequila later that cramps me up when I drown the pain? Anyway, mag oil has saved my life. My son-in-laws have used it in golfing twist spasms in the same way. I can't say enough...

THE PABLOS

I'm going to look into that. Thanks for the tip. I was thinking of hitting the cramp with bee stings...thought that a few stings in my hip joint might do the trick. Sciatic nerve is a sketchy business...don't need that getting crazy on me...in the middle of nowhere. If I sleep on it wrong....it wakes me up...dull pulsing pain.

I spend...roughly...an hr each evening on a yoga mat...rolling on tennis balls in a sock...and a foam roll I have. It's a rather painful endeavor...but does break up the tightened muscles. Drink lots of water and suck up the aftermath pains of rolled out cramps...usually in the next morning...like this morning....I'm feeling it where I rolled out the knots in my back particularly.

Running as I do...it's borderline masochistic. There is definitely a part of me..that thrives on pain/agony. I feel to be training correctly...one must always be on the edge of exhaustion....shouldn't be running at a pace...where conversation would come easy. The mind panics when the body gets tired....and that's really the biggest obstacle to overcome..and have a successful run.

If you stay on that edge...where the mind is crying...and you can beat back its voice...you slip into meditation and peace. To be comfortable in your pain....comfortable in times of desperation...that's what separates the weak from the strong. The ability to create something out of suffering....to be strong in the pain. To overcome the world.

Belly Breathing, Pain, and One-Pointedness

Belly Breathing, Pain, and One-Pointedness

"Your body is your unique history of your unique path of avoiding pain".

Don Johnson, author of The Protean Body: A Rolfer's View of Human Flexibility made that statement in his interesting study of human flexibility and movement.

I did the 10 basic sessions of Rolfing with master Rolfer Bob Brill in Sedona about 10 years ago. I have used myopractic, chiropractic, and non-pressure Chiro over the years. Each one has benefits and some drawbacks. BTW, I'm jealous of Bob for an entirely different reason than his excellent Rolfing skills: he was at The Filmore East on Dec 31, 1969 when Jimi Hendrix played live and recorded "Band of Gypsys". I never saw Jimi live....I had the chance but passed it up. Bob's eyes shine when he talks about the concert. Wow.

I like yoga combined with Pilates. I use a short 10-15 minute session before biking, rock work, hiking, or backpacking and have virtually eliminated spasms in my low back and knees. My left calf somehow holds a different secret, probably related to my avoidance of pain, and still locks up mysteriously in response to?

Belly breathing exercises, called Misogi in Aikido and Japanese martial arts, is truly where life begins. Chest breathing, typical in Western societies, just like big chests and narrow waists that are sought after by men as the pinacle of male power and beauty, reveals a body that isn't using all it has to give, in fact a body that is ignorant of its own true power. The belly is the center of life and balance.

Deep breaths from the solar plexus...if you're out of breath, what part of your body is heaving - abdomen/belly or chest/shoulders? Yoga breathing has many styles and techniques...one technique that I use concentrates merely on the in - out of breathe. No other thought, just awareness of the belly rising or falling along with the breathe. A few minutes of that and you know where you are and feel it in the core. No questions asked.

The reason I'm having to really work..to get rid of these cramps...is because I catered to them for a very long time. Once correct forms are found...it is a must...to stay in those forms. Adjusting form around pain...truly does lead to more pain. Use form to run through pain...pain can teach form...a perfect circle. Core...Form

Losing form...caving into pain...can be devastating..as it tastes like panic. Getting broken down is one of the worst feelings ever. I've been kicked to the curb so many times...it's pretty emotional...when all has been given...and it's not enough.

That's the state though...that's where endorphin addiction brings you..a place where things move differently...maybe it is here...total involvement in the present is had. For sure...you need to quiet the fearing mind...shut that fool down.

* I've been a runner most my life. It has only been in the last few years that I've begun to fully get my head around...form. I had been so influenced by outside interference...that I forgot...nobody is original or knows shit.

I reinvented running for myself. I don't care for technology much...don't care about miles or time..won't be bothered to be told how to run/train...running is my meditation...my yoga...my disregard for society. It's an ancient goddamn land...spirit worlds and harsh environment...I feel fortunate to be able to experience it. Pre columbian locomotion...as basic as it gets

** yes yes and yes...belly breathing...from the core..from form

Pretty gnarly plants....height wise...about the same as I run my indoor plants...3.5 - 4.0' coco surface to tip top. I've pruned a great deal of flower protecting leaves...the buds are now open to full sun. They are like a motor sprayed with nitrous oxide...bam boom slam...

I'm hoping to not have to tie them up....I want a free standing canopy...like a California Live Oak sort of expression

yo pablos,

a little update to my last grow:

i found a ripping expression of querkle. it threw a little males flower power around week 4-5 but it was only in the lowers and it was manageable to deal. only lasted a week later and never happened again. i havent found a single seed in any of the pot. anywas!

its spicey, grapey, sugary smelling and tasty. the high is fast and really brings you up, then the rest of the trip is more indica...so aweseom

got a white domina x qrazy train cross going now that is funky and i just started flowering ;)

love me some tga genetics

I'd still not fly open here...even with a greenhouse...I'd still feel like I should stay low. I'd do up veggies more than cannabis. This little outdoor I'm doing...actually satisfies my under the sun ambitions. If it were any bigger or crazier...then it would be work. The way it is now...all fun.

I will build a greenhouse....but it will be for tomatoes...let it collect the attention...so I can stay in my pit...with my girls. I have very modest needs from the cannabis garden...and honestly...I believe pure sats need to be grown in places of origin....greenhouses can imitate but not replicate.

I just don't have those desires...I'd rather take a trip somewhere and smoke it there...which I've done...and will do again.

pablos mi amigo...make yourself some salve! here are some basic ingredients
*cannabis resins; the purer the better (strainwise, whatever of your gear you think is most anti-inflammatory and/or analgesic/sedative)
*arnica
*comfrey
*eucalyptus

use quality coconut oil as a base and have fun experimenting with ratios to find what works for you! (with the arnica, comfrey and eucalyptus in it TOPICAL USE only...) you can also use olive oil as a carrier and of course vary the ingredients you add for different textures/effects etc.

pm if you want to talk a bit more

Hi Madjag

Great advice! Besides the healthful effects on muscles and nerves, Mg is great for the yang! Combined with zinc it is the best testosterone booster I know of. If you are over 40 and want to have the strength, flexibility and healing/recovery powers you had when you were 25, do yourself a favor and take Mg and Zn everyday. If you really want to feel young, add some ginseng and/or astragalus.

If you can't tolerate high oral doses of Mg, the oil is great. I am the opposite myself, the oil irritates my skin. That's OK though, as I have a very high tolerance for oral Mg (partially due to my well water, which is VERY high in Mg). Most people's colon will adjust to oral Mg pretty quickly, especially if you build up slowly.

Sciatic nerve is a sketchy business...don't need that getting crazy on me...in the middle of nowhere. If I sleep on it wrong....it wakes me up...dull pulsing pain.

Sounds like piriformis syndrome. Look it up. Learning how to release spasms in the piriformis muscle with the right stretches can give miraculous relief.

I know a number of people who's lives have been basically ruined by the misery of sciatica, who have tried everything, including surgery, with no relief. I'll teach them how to stretch the piriformis and they will get immediate relief, like minutes.

The conventional wisdom is that sciatica is caused by disc problems, and sometimes it is. I have found that most often, though it is piriformis syndrome. One telltale clue is that if your sciatica is worse after sitting or laying, it is almost certainly piriformis.
