If you could go back in time and change one thing, what would it be?

Let's say somehow you're given the chance to back to any point in the past and change one thing in such a way that that thing never happens the way it did in current history? Not something too unspecific either like human nature but rather a more specific event or invention that changed the world.

To give an example I'll start with this. If I could go back in time and change one thing so it never happens I'd make it so the pinnacle of human combat was sword fighting. That guns and other ranged weapons were never invented. I mean just think of how different the world would be from that one change. Part of what's wrong with the world is that pretty much any fool can use a gun and force situations they could never force with a sword. Plus if you're an unarmed victim against someone with a gun you're fairly screwed but against someone with a sword you have a fighting chance.

The outcome of all the wars we've fought would be very different and people in general would be more respectful of one another. Especially if sword fighting was a skill that all were taught. I'm not saying it would be a perfect world. Just that it would be alot harder to get away with some of the things people do now and alot of people would likely not do some of the fucked up shit they do to one another for fear they'd never pull it off.

the causation of altering events would really change the fabric of history

but i if could id go back the first speaking uprights and just share a little message with them

that if every human possesses the simple understanding that regardless of how we came to life, that we share the same ancestors regardless, that evolution has a direction as does our own development individually and as a race and that knowing this we should seek to embrace the highest parts of our conscious and not the most base parts of our being

then again maybe this has already happened and like a bad game of telephone they fucked up the message

I'd make sure George McFly married Lorraine, Bif has his car filed with manure, Doc Brown didn't rip up the latter tipping him off about being shot by the Lybian terrorists from whom he purchased the plutonium, and of course stop the clock tower from ever being hit by lightening by diverting the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity into the flux capacitor allowing me to return back to the future.

Or something like that, seems plausible.

I would change our future selves from going back in time, and planting the seed of religion to control the future from the past.

See I got a crazy hypothesis. The writings of flying chariots, and such was us from the future going back to change the past.

Think about the technical knowledge it took to build the Egyptian, and Mayan pyramids. They both were built with similar technology, but had no way to communicate with each other. They also both wrote about "aliens". Then all of a sudden this knowledge goes away and is forgotten until relearned some time in the dark ages.

Just seems to me if time travel is possible then it has already happened, and is still happening right now.

I expect to see something in my life time that will redirect our "attention". Something "alien" like from space. Although it will just be our future selves again planting the new seeds of the new religion.

Fucking control freaks. Can't our future selves be a little less like Christopher Columbus, and a lot more like Gandhi. :)

Of course that's the thing about time travel if you somehow alter the past there is no telling how it would effect the future but it would be changed somehow none the same. I know it's difficult because life changing events are unpredictable but as best as you can, say what you think that change would be. Like I did with the sword thing I said wars would be different and people would think twice about doing wrong things to one another.

then again maybe this has already happened and like a bad game of telephone they fucked up the message

Scary thought but quite probably :)

That's it? That just seems like such a waste of a great opportunity.

I'd go back in time with inventions and ideas that are the agents of change.

If you can accelerate the rate of change earlier, then we'll be colonizing space now.

I would go back and make it so that in all religions one should have as much sex as possible. minimum 4 times a week for members, 6 times a week for prest/imams/rabbis.

think of all the poor children that would be saved.

and it would take the edge of the religious anger.

but alas i couldnt do that, because i would have to vaste my go to go back and change it back to 4 word game to save the spacetime continum
tnx a lot s4l

No joke. I have a friend who is really into the belief in aliens visiting earth and such. The theory he's latched onto and has believed for a good ten years now at least, is that the aliens (whom look pretty much like the alien depicted in the recent movie called "Paul") are actually future humans who due to how they've screwed the world up have evolved into this alien form and they've come back in time to try to stop us from doing something that will bring that future about.

I'd arrange for me to never be born

No no it needs to be something that would bring about a positive change. Everyone has worth and value if anything is "god given" it's that. To eliminate anyone from ever being is tragic.....well unless it's somebody like Hairy AssSlinger or Hitslike-a-girler but you get the idea?
