Another thing that I like about the Lumibar is the passive cooling - no noisy fans! It would be interesting to talk to Lumigrow and see what they say about a vertical application - it seems like the heat sink might be less effective if oriented in that direction.

I've ordered up parts to build a long, narrow fixture. The initial one will be 4" x 22" to take advantage of some left-over parts that I have around and prove the concept. If it works as hoped, it will be expanded out to 4" x 48"-60". Noctua fans will be used to keep the racket down and insure good cooling in any orientation. I'm trying to come up with something that would be easy for people to DIY, keep the costs down to a somewhat reasonable level, and be packaged in an enclosure that looks reasonably professional.

plus i removed the old HGL stuff since it's no long available... i will hang onto the data but will no long list them.

also, while i was updating the charts i realized that although i keep several other spreadsheets (one which is alphabetical), i thought it might be helpful to everyone, since the list has become so long, to post an alphabetical image(s)...

so look for all of this ^^^ on page 1...

also, i must re-emphasize i believe you get what you pay for. so if you go off and pic the cheapest or the cheapest per watt, etc... that is probably what you will get. these charts are only meant to be helpful and not endorse nor disqualify any particular brand..

Right on, Don Dump! I just got a Pro Gro 260 today, their top-seller.

It's hefty, well-built. Fans are a bit loud, nothing like the Vortex a few ft away tho.
Short 6' cord. You can get them longer as a custom order.
They sent me both cords @ my request, but the 240 is the euro type. Still, no additional cost, cool.
They advertise it as consuming 180W in full on mode, here's what I got w/ the Kill A Watt:

Here we are w/ just the red band

and here we are w/ the blues

Happy to be able to add to this great thread!

Great work keeping up on it, GP73LPC! :respect:

Are there any real LED lights under $300 worth buying?

Take a look at the charts on the first page - the Evo models are in that range, and Mr. X has done very well with them. The Onviled Snake looks pretty interesting, too. They seem to be meant for use in multiples, but that would get you started.

Can you even buy the EVOs in US or Canada? Their website I need a translator.

My Blackstar seems to be doing well. I have a grow journal going if you want to see how it does. Won't really know until the plants are older but it's working and growing plants :)

If I was going to redo it, I would get a Lumigrow ES165 or 330 or a HGL lamp (the X2's are coming out in 3 weeks).

You really do have to pay to play :)

Wow those Lumigrow's are expensive, essentially things are looking like I might be stuck where I am for a while. So I might try to get away with a Ikea wardrobe grow. I'm paranoid about running a HPS in a confined space so I figure a LED setup that could grow 2-3 plants well would be great. I would use it for Vegging out plants when a room is available.

How does the Blackstar 240 do vs. the pro grow 180?

Also I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around these things. I go site to site and people say they are X watts but really use X watts of power? So when you are saying you have a 400w LED Light setup does that just mean it is putting out a comparable amount of light to a 400w hps? But it might only use 250 watts of power? I'm getting all sorts of confused here from reading too much.

maybe one could get a very good performance out of the evos using other supplemental lighting; in my head the best would be t5s. introducing hids to the mix would defeat the point of low consumption low heat.

I'm thinking two evo led 90 v3 plus bloom t5s for flowering.

for vegging just plain good t5s, 70% blues and 30% reds.

did a quick calculation in my head and would need about 2k dollars to get all the lights up and running though, kinda pricey. but very low heat, more silent and less consumption, many pros and just one con, price.

You would have to look at the charts to see wattage comparing those 2 lights. I believe they are pulling around the same wattage. The design are very similar though. People have gotten good results from them.

The way retailers market LED lights is # of LED's x their watt (3 usually) = wattage.
The Blackstar 240 has 80 3W LED = 240W. Whenever you read a 'compared to a 600hps' or similar, just ignore that marketing bullshit :)

Look at the graphs on the first post, choose your budget and then work within that. Blackstar / ProGrow are good lamps. Any of the major LED's are good lamps. Avoid eBay like the plague though. The more expensive ones just use crazy top of the line LED's, heat sinks, build qualities etc.. They are more dialed in but for a small tent/closet grow any of the more hobby style lamps will do. You can't go wrong with either really.

Save money on the light and get a proper fan/carbon scrubber IMO. Security is WAY more important :)

This guy is starting to sell his panels. 33 LEDs per panel, don't know if all of them are Cree XP-E, up to 45 watts, somewhat adjustable? 240USD including powersupply. Someone should mail him and ask the bins he's using :) Just wondering how they are cooled, didn't see any heatsinks or fans?
