LEDs are getting closer every day, though I still think they're a little ways off.

It'll be a mature technology when commercial growers both of pot and of other plants choose LEDs over HID.

I saw some stuff about single 100w LEDs and whatnot that are gonna be coming out in the next few years. I think most likely LEDs will facerape HIDs in the not too distance future.

How much does a new top of the line reflector cost with hardware, glass and two 600w bulbs (per year)?

Add on the costs for climate control - the cost of those items and the electricity to use them. How much juice is used each month for a 12,000 BTU a/c unit? The a/c unit itself will be mightily expensive.

Well since I've never seen a "vertical" LED (although I have heard that someone tried to manufacture one) it's all moot to me, I've yet to see any LED perform equally to a HPS setup, but then again I do not grow horizontally...only vertically.

good question, not to mention not being detectable to FLIR due to lack of IR...

my units could be hung vertically...

four of them and you would be putting out about 440 watts...

and there are others... i know HGL has one, 504W Vertical Penetrator...

what pannels best for the money,

maybe we can get a price range compare the meercat
100-200
200-400
400-600
600+

would be easyer to see whats what, but would need a rating set by documended things like on here,

so maybe link some diarys to each one,
or split the diary led section up into 300and less 300 and up

this thread, my LED Results; grams per watt thread and LED Retailers have most of that information.

check my sig, for those links...

megayields - I have also been looking for a Vertical LED array. Thinking it would be nice to(funds permitting) run a test grow with vert bushes using nothing but leds. Would have to surround the plant on 3-4 sides, maybe the top as well. Would be interesting to test it out.

Does anybody know if there is any reason why led arrays can't be hung vertically? Just electronics and some fans, what could gravity do to prevent this?

i'm not aware of any problems by hanging arrays vertically...

do it and post a grow thread :tiphat:

the thing is that there is some logic in putting an hps vertically because it throws light over 360 degrees - although personally i still think horizontal is better if you manage the canopy well ;). but an LED throws light in a 60-90 degree cone.
having said that i would love to see someone lash 3-4 strip type fixtures together and do a vert with them. :D

I didn't think there would be a problem, but you never know unless you try it. You can do anything once. Would probably consult with the manufacturer first to relieve any doubts. Currently in the process of moving, so won't be setting up until that's taken care of. I'm seriously considering isolating one plant to run a vertical led setup to test the technology. See how big of a bush it can turn out, what the limitations are in terms of penetration and proximity to light source, etc. etc. Grow thread on that for sure, now I just have to be patient.

I agree, would be nice to see the results of a vert led grow. Are you thinking 4 strips vertically in a square pattern, all facing out? Any side lighting or just see what those 4 can do? I think you would have to have all sides covered by led's to be effective. This depends on the actual footprint of the array, or rather the effective footprint to produce reasonably similar cannabis to another source(HPS/Fluoro). More tests would have to be conducted based on lens angle to determine what the best placement of the light is and how big the plant can be grown out to. Quite the investment, both time and money, to figure it out.

what kind of leds you running?

running 500watt blackstar and 240watt, both flowering versions, just abit paranoid about making a grow journal, I live in a nanny state and punishment is severe, even if you grow one plant for medical use.

I need to have my medicine to function, have a couple of slipped disks, and really bad hip pain, and powerful pain killers are not my thing, I've seen what it did to a 1st cousin of mine, Ate away at his stomach and he died of stomach cancer :(.

Perpetual is the way i grow, harvest a plant ever 15 - 20 days. Veg them for 30 days under the 240 and then transfer them to flowering cab under the 500.

I've posted pics on here of my first grow many years back, but for some reason as times have passed with local events etc, I've been vary wary of doing so.

Peace to all

yeah 4 or 5 strips is the kind if thing i was thinking about. if the LED lens angle was 90 degrees the 4 should do it.
