So are you saying 4 of the ES165's will be the same penetrating power as a 1000?

[and just for compairison sake, will the blackstar 500w or pro grow 400, 4ea wont??]

Decisions Decisions

I'm using a Blackstar 500w right now and it's going OK but I'm starting to think I would have been better served getting two 240w units and putting them side-by-side in my 2'x4' tent. I've got 3 Northern Lights growing and the one directly under the light is doing great but the ones to the sides are noticeably thinner. However, I see no signs of the lower leaves lacking in light so I'm thinking the penetration is good. I don't know how it really compares to using MH/HPS, though, as this is my first LED run. I had to raise the light to about 2 1/2' above the tops as any closer and the light starts to bleach the plants. Heat is negligible but there is quite a bit of fan noise. It is nice to not have to run cooling ducts, though. The real test of this unit will be when I switch to 12/12 in a week or two. I've been tempted to throw in a couple flouros to help even out the lighting but I think I'll just keep it straight LED for this grow to see how it works on it's own.

Just a quick-and-dirty review for you to mull over.

This is something that I should have mentioned about the Lumigrow. They actually kick out more heat than I would have expected, nothing compared to an HID, of course, but still more than I'd have thought. The fans can be annoying if your grow area is near your living area - they are thermostatically controlled, and apparently are small, high-speed fans, because they do make some racket. Definitely not stealthy.

sounds like you have the light too close to the middle plant and there is no room for the light to spread. try raising it up to 6" or 12" or whatever the recommended distance is - then it should irradiate the whole canopy better.

I spoke to the guy I bought it from at Gotham Hydro and he recommended 15" but that was way too close. It's currently over two feet away from the tops and the plants are looking much better but I'm still considering moving it even farther away. Thanks, though. :tiphat:

*edit*I see my typo that lead to this confusion. I'll fix that right away.

WOW, just read entire thread in 2hrs.....great great info here. And thanks for all the leg work GP73LPC!

thanks :tiphat:

I saw these when looking around for EVO's after reading Mr. X's post. I've not done LED myself, but haven't seen these mentioned yet so wanted to toss it out there for the experts.

Evo 135

http://www.proledsystems.com/evo-led-grow-light.html#

I don't think those are 135 watts... I think those are EVO 90's that really only put out 70 watts. The 90's are what Mr X used and i never seen these 135's... Looks like another retailer OVER RATING the array...

I have no experience growing in tents or with the lumigrow leds...

with some 200 cubic feet in that tent my guess is changing out the air every 20 seconds would be good. and the 650 cfm fan would do that...

if the carbon fan did the trick before that shouldn't change ;)

good luck :good:

GP73LPC, thank you for posting all this information. It is helping me to decide if i should start a switchover to LED's. People like you who take the time to educate the community are INVALUABLE to the community. So thank you again for showing us all the LED light.

I built a test budroom the first of this year and have played with lights, everything else never changed.

I am now replacing my 7000 watt budroom with 5800 watts. The 12 HID's are being traded in for 5 of the 336x Penetrators, costing $4 per watt times 2700 watts.
The DS400 from advanced made it to the last round, those 90 degree lens kept it in, but even being way cheaper did not make the light falloff any less. The 120 degree units were not even considered.

A lot of factors must be considered, but I just do lights. 13 years with the same nutes and media, took that long trying to understand the lights.

I held onto the room money until my testing was complete, the LED modules cost 10x the rest of the light costs and are less than half the total wattage in the room, 2700 watts plus a single HID, 20 T5's, and 50 T8's. This is my day job, I expect I will get the return estimated or go on welfare. I have never used welfare yet. In fact I can safely blow $11,000 on a new room.

I just posted because cost is not the deciding factor, nor should it be, payback in 3 grows, or 5 grows, it still gets paid for.
Business decisions are not emotional with me, Cammie got my money because of her product.
