Stopping the Rubbermaid Glow

I went to Wally-World and bought a solar emergency blanket in the camping section for $1.98 and cut it in sections to fit in my already black rubbermades.

I sprayed 3M -77 adhesive on the inside and carefully stuck the sections in place.

Worked well for me - YMMV.

Yes, overmind, you are correct. I used the reflectix insulation.... totally light-proofed the glowing rubbermaid, but also kept more heat in, so consider that as well :joint:

How much more heat? was there a noticeable rise in temperature? if so, by about how many degrees?

EDIT: wait, i thought it was the reflectix tape, not the insulation. I can def. see the insulation making things a lot warmer.

The cleanest way to do it is to use aluminum tape. It will take an hour or two and take probably 2-3 rolls at $7-8 a piece, but imho, its worth it. THis is an especially good way to go if you live in an apartment and can't have that paint/spraypaint smell all over. Also won't risk getting paint on floors/carpets.

Yeah!... what First said... :)

Seriously, the foil tape is the quickest and best solution besides getting thicker, black tubs to begin with.

Silicone and mylar is effective but I'd rather put that in _over_ the foil tape since you're most likely going to replace the mylar a few times.

get the black rubbermaids, i had 400 watts of hps in a cooltube and nothing even of that could get through. easiest way to do it.

black rubbermaids
either mylar or reflectix the paint chips off way to easy even if u sand it.

i had a rubbermaid, i did 2 coats of white and it glowed on the thin spots and the unpainted parts. my solution was to stick the inside with "mylar" it was actually gift wrap it comes in silver gold and various assorted colors. it does the same job as mylar though reflect light. and reflect light it did. no more glow or leaks.

doing some reasearch and came across this... sorry for bumping such an old thread..

what about stacking 2 or more rubbermaid tubs one inside the other? could even cut the bottom out of the top container for an extra inch of vertical space.

You'd still run into areas that weren't covered.

I don't recommend painting inside these small tubs anymore... prefer to lightly sand and paint the outside with a black 'plastic' paint or rubberized automotive undercoating.

Use the mylar/wrapping-paper/emergency-blanket with rubber cement or something non-toxic on the inside. :D

The foil tape outside is expensive but still 100% effective, don't know what the glue is made of so will keep it on the outside.

Stay Safe!

i use electrical tape under mylar or paint. works great for me haven't had one light leak so far.... and u can't really beat the price. it's just time consuming that's all.

Micro.

i spray painted the outside of mine black. About two coats and it worked great. I also used black duct tape where ever i needed to make cuts so paint did not chip. I have no idea why you are having such issues.
