great question cause i have a 400 watt ulti-lemenx ballast system running in one regular size room and its almost like a sauna in there. im hopping i can find something that runs cooler

i run quantums and am very happy. they will run much cooler than magnetic ballasts. i have heard mixed opinions on the lumatek

I ordered 2 new 600 watt Quantums for $288 total with free shipping I think that is a killer deal that could not be passed up. I will see in a few days how warm they run vs my old Mag ballast and a cheap no name digital ballast(which I think runs hotter than a MAG).

i run lumatek 1000s and never had a problem. they run quite cool, not hot to the touch at all. if you keep a fan blowing on them, they are no hotter than a laptop.

i dont like quatums because of the fan. yeah it may keep it cooler, but just something else to break on you. plus i had a 600w quantum and the fans got clogged up with dust.

i run a Lumatek 600w digi. Up from a 400w mag. My temps rose by 3 degrees Celsius. Not a big deal, lovin the extra lumens and no problems…yet.

I upgraded to quantums from mag ballasts, I freaking love them. love them! cant say that enough. I have one lumatek and it runs considerably hotter than the quantums. I would buy quantums again thats for sure.

Don't quantum's have fans on them?? Lumatek do not so its not a fair assessment. The Noise from the fans on the quantums are not that quite I can tell you that.

Ill teabag my lumateks all day long , but my sack ain't going anywhere near a quantum :) :tiphat:

Curious Chef, what's the aversion to Quantum?

The quantum runs at least 3x hotter then a comparable lumatek . A friend tried out one , and brought it back the next day . Even with the fan in the quantum , it was much hotter......

quantums are pretty nice. run very cool to the touch.

Have you looked into hydrofarms Phantom ballast?
They're also very cool, but dont have a built in fan. (id rather not have the fan...)

Q. Why do my Quantum Horticulture ballasts have fans in them? Should I worry about the fan failing?

A. Despite the fact that our circuit boards run cooler than our competitors that was not enough for our engineers. We also designed our ballasts with a sealed stainless steel ball bearing fan in them. This is to help cool the circuit board even further. It is shown that all electronic circuit boards run better and have less problems when they are cool. We have taken the same philosophy with designing our ballast. Just look around you. Every computer in the world has a fan in them. I am sure that you have never worried about your computer’s fan failing before? The fan in our ballasts is covered by our 3 year no hassle warranty.

Q. Why do my Quantum Horticulture ballasts run so much cooler than other digital ballasts?

A. Do to our extensive engineering of our products our engineers have found a way to arrange our circuit boards in a fashion so that they are more efficient and have less resistance than our competitors. Do to the fact that there is less resistance there is less heat. Because there is less heat our products run smoother and have less heat related issues than many of our competitors ballasts do.

Q. Why does my Quantum Horticulture ballast have a fuse in it?

A. As engineers we know that there are certain aspects of electricity that we cannot control. On all our ballasts we have incorporated a fuse into the incoming line voltage side of the ballast. This is in case there are any surges from the power company, any wiring problems in the greenhouse before it reaches the ballast, and any other unforeseen problems that come from the power grid. If your ballast happens to blow a fuse please note that we have supplied you a spare fuse in the cover of the fuse box, just make sure that you have them on hand in case it happens again. ***Please ensure when changing the fuse you disconnect the power before changing the fuse.***

3x hotter? So if the Lumatek was 150F, the Quantum was 450F?

My Quantums run pretty cool, my friend has some 600 watt Lumateks and they feel about the same to me IMO. No way on earth it is 3x as hot, if that were the case I would not be able to keep my room cool enough. I agree with Hammerhead, the fan is kinda loud for how small it is...and it is not making it any cooler than the Lumateks...but I am happy so far. Two 600 watt Quantums for $288 delivered and some local hydro store are charging $240 per Lumatek.

I like having the option to adjust the intensity if it gets too hot or for a transition phase....but I think the Lumateks and Quantums are pretty close in heat output for the 600 watt ballasts.

I still say 3 x as hot . I temped my lumateks (600+1000), they ran between 80 and 95 . Depending on where on the ballast I took the temp and how much airflow was in the room .My friends quantum was easy 3x hotter , so around 250+ , easy . Way to hot to touch for more then a split second .

In light of all the posts here and on other forums, the Quantums are cool. So either this is incorrect information or the Quantum in question was defective. Clearly Quantums don't run that hot.
