I am no warrior, you might be, but we is the wrong word. I am also not at war with the "system" or anyone. you might be though
go ahead, steal my plants, there outside for anyone to take. if there stealing them ,then they must want / need them more then me. I am not desperate, therefore I would not turn to killing someone for stealing my plants, or harming then in any way

In america, home invaders/theives get shot at with the intent of death. If they get away, they will be back, this is why killing them is justified. If they get caught and jailed, they don't do much time and when they get out, its right back to stealing. Those are the dumb ones though, the smart ones watch you for a while to see when you won't be home then they clean you out. I mean everything, bedsheets, towels, socks, your toothbrush, paper towels. My friend literally came home to a completely vacant house, even the pictures were taken off the walls.

In the UK it's about reasonable self defense and fearing for your own life. In this case the burglar was disarmed and stabbed with his own knife in the guys house so he'll get off with it most likely. The only complication was the 5x stabbing (some might think once is enough) but if he can explain that like the guy was struggling the whole time and the homeowner still feared for his life then he'll be fine.
There was another case last year where two guys invaded the home of a family and tied them up etc. The family managed to break free and the men chased the burglars into the street and beat the living shit out of them and went to jail. The family was no longer in danger and the guys were in fact exacting revenge which is the job of the courts. Judges don't like it when you take the law into your own hands, it's like saying I can do your job better than you can.
If someone is in your home then you can do whatever it takes to make you your + family safe. If they are leaving your home or have left then you just need to let them go or be charged. This is the law as it stands in the UK, seems pretty simple to me but for some reason (publicity/votes) the tories are going to simplify it.
