My veg & clone chamber is a gutted fridge and I use old liquid laundry soap containers for my smaller hempy buckets, the bigger buckets I use are 3 gal.bathroom trashcans from wallyworld. both work fantastic and are only a tip of the ghetto iceberg that is my grow area.

haha nice work boys! my current grow is so incredibly ghetto it's not funny at all, haven't had the money to reinvest toward my cab in a long time now, so ive got a few decorative pillows wedge behind the cab and the wall where my chords come out to block light, my new panda plastic door wasn't working so now it's just sheets of cardboard duct taped to the front of the wardrobe behind the doors to keep it light sealed with a blanket over that for extra protection. heh heh, i meant to invest in new light proofing stuff before flowering started almost 2 weeks ago but when the clones are ready they are ready, i can't wait more than a day or two, and it's looking like they will be ghetto rigged like this for another couple weeks, lol damn bill collectors keep whittling away at my paycheck, and i don't make any money growing so i just have to keep doing things "ghetto"

Thanks, I didn't come up with that myself, there is a thread on here somewhere that shows you how to make it. Only problem with it is the heat from the pump. I suppose in the winter it will work well but I could not get it to clone shit in the summer heat, even in an air conditioned room. The clones you see in the pic ended up getting root rot. I only had one clone survive.

ok so ill throw one up my ghetto water chiller. It was a fail boat. did it chill water? yup. did you have to put a 3 gallon block of ice in it to cool two systems every hours... yup. in the end i ran out of freezer space. I did manage to lower the water temp by some 5 degrees using this set up and a schedule to replace the 3 gallon reusable ice blocks. that lasted for about a month before i found a used chiller. good by ghetto chiller.

In seeing these pics, I'm realizing there's a fine line between ghetto and cutting edge... I wonder how many grow inovations started out just this way. :) :)

Oh, and we shouldn't limit this to indoor only, I'll bet there's a bunch of cool tricks the o/d crew are using too!

Please post more pics of this. I am working on something very similar right now. A friend and I spent a week fucking around with an old water cooler trying to make something like this for an easy cloner. We could have made it work but he did not want to spend the money required. I'm running with it so I'd really like to see some detailed pics please.

that is really all i can give you. its simply two 25 foot rolls of copper. hook those up to a pump with a return to the res and add water and ice. really that is all it was. uber simplistic and full of fail. there is a reason they invented electric chillers.

you just cant keep up with the BTU's the lights are pumping. to give you an example. the block of ice i used was roughly 3 gallons. it was 12" x 12" x 6". it was a big ass block. and it lasted 1-1.5 hours. 2 hours tops. the small gains in temp from this set up did not out weight the labor invested in moving ice blocks and freezer space.

Run copper tubing in and coil up inside the fridge then run it back out. It would be so simple to do and would only require drilling 2 small holes (1 inlet and 1 outlet). The fridge thermostat could be used to control the temperature. The fridge is big enough inside to put a reservoir in as well...

I don't do hydro so I've never tried it, but I think it would work great.

A question for the people that have been around here longer than me, is there a 'Ghetto' thread/stickys anywhere on IC Mag?

If not, I hope this can be the start of one; it'd be good for newbies (like me!) b4 they/we/I spend too much $ we don't have. And i think it may hone peoples skills in different ways, and another way to pass knowledge on too.

Its not efficient to use a fridge for a chiller.

A dorm fridge based chiller certainly does work.

The key is finding one that has one of the tiny freezer compartments in it. Then remove the little compartment walls :D

Temps in that little space will PLUMMET.

Get some copper tubing, big enough for easy flow, small enough it can be easily formed. Coil it up nice and tight in a bucket that fits the fridge comfortably. Put your coiled tubing in, and fill the bucket with water and a ton of rocksalt. The salt keeps the water in the bucket from freezing up, and allows the water to get below freezing.

Drill holes, run tubing through holes drilled in the fridge, connect to what is now your chiller coil.

Now, you'll have to do some tweaking to keep your rez from getting too cold, or freezing in the chiller if you cycle your pump. My advice is to get a very small, basic pump, and have it run continuously.

But, yes, a dorm fridge will make an excellent chiller. Large fridge, not so much.
