"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."

"Whatever you are, be a good one."

"And in the end it is not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years."

"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power."

"Those who look for the bad in people will surely find it."

"I'm a success today because I had a friend who believed in me and I didn't have the heart to let him down."

"I don't like that man. I must get to know him better."

"Success is going from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm."

"My father taught me to work, but not to love it. I never did like to work, and I don't deny it. I'd rather read, tell stories, crack jokes, talk, laugh -- anything but work."

"Character is like a tree and reputation its shadow. The shadow is what we think it is and the tree is the real thing."

"I will prepare and some day my chance will come."

"Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle."

"Every man's happiness is his own responsibility."

"I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to
succeed, but I am bound to live up to what light I have."

"He has a right to criticize, who has a heart to help."

also there was another one where he said...
that it takes him time to learn something, more then others, but once he learns he, he doesn't forget it

not too surprised that the guy got shot...

America was full of dreams and optimism.

No way, we lost the illusion of America's greatness during Vietnam & Nixon, arguably Korea. Carter was our last best hope for regaining some of that, and he was hustled outta office, leading to the 80's & Reagan, with the 90's just a sham in continuation of the woes, to what Bush???

You've got to go with the post-war high of WWII when America started to come out of it's shell with the defeat of 'evil'... 1950's would have to be the best era for America during that century. Pre-WWII wasn't anything great in America for sure.

We had the boom in technology, coming out of the War as the preeminent power, still had hope & idealism... the entire world was at our heels.

Any year that Bill Clinton was in office. Greatest period in American prosperity in the past century without a doubt.

I was commenting on the America I experienced in my own flesh... not history.

But your point is right on!

^I agree 100%. The 90s were the years of my childhood, and the attitude of the country was just completely different. I look back at those years and just remember the optimism in the air.

I think 9-11-01 is the straw the broke the horses back

I agree the Clinton years were the best but only short term. We have NAFTA to thank for the expansion of multinationals that take jobs away. I'm not sure how instrumental Clinton was with Graham Leach Bliley but he did sign the bill.

IMO, the best year economically was 1969. Not because of economic statistics but because the 1970s ushered in substantial increases in corporate lobbying.

How Corporations Influence the Government
© Marc A Triebwasser, 1998

Part Two of the book, which covers Chapters 2, 3, and 4, deals with how corporations influence the government. Part Three, which consists of Chapters 5, 6, and 7, discusses how corporations affect us directly. Part Two is a little easier to understand because the concept of corporations influencing the government is a familiar one. In general, corporations influence government through campaign contributions, through lobbying, and through captured regulatory agencies. Although this is not always emphasized in American Government texts, this influence is certainly a common theme in many political discussions. In Part Three, we talk about how corporations affect us directly. This concept is not difficult to understand, but it involves ideas with which we unfortunately may be far less familiar...
