Meeting, befriending, and hanging with other growers

Thru my Job I've met a bunch of growers by happenstance, Some of them I'd be willing to call friends, tho most of them are flaky at best.

Having grower friends is kinda nice because it expands your strain selection ( about 50% of the strains in my garden were cut/ cloned for free from someone else's grow)

A whopping 2 other growers actually know where I live, and I'm not sure they'd remember how to get here on a whim!



Being legal, I'm pretty much always happy to help another grower having trouble, but they'll never actually get to know me/where I live or how much I grow.

Well my situation is kinda different, I was introduced into the growing world over 24 years ago by a good friend who I still see. I live in the Santa Cruz Mountains and basically everyone (almost) grows here but I was growing when it was wayyy on the down lo....I know about 10 top growers good enough to just pop on over to their houses, none of them have been to my house though I have invited about 2 of them. I had an electrician come in and wire my room for 240v he was cool and was someone who had been doing odd jobs at my house for years ended up he wanted to get paid in ...yep...weed lol.

It is an interesting sub-culture here in SC, it really is a throwback to the old hippee days, we know who is cool and who lives on the dark side of the mountain so to speak, I feel sad as my best friend who originally introduced me to this fantastic "hobby"? Evocation? Passion? is now under the influence of some really bad, hard drugs, he is not the same person I once knew and I miss that old person.

Sorry for getting melancholy but this thread made me think. I have a growing partner and he (and his younger brother) are the only two peeps ever to see my rooms or help me trim, when you have 4-5 lbs every 60-70 days you need help.

I am very lucky with my network.... strains are very available basically for free, information is abundant and good herb is everywhere.

I am truly blessed

I MET skagitmagic and he is way cool, he's been here and i been there.

i totally dont worry about him and his wife. who i worry about is my son in law who is my only buyer, leaving my daughter and narcing me off to get even with her somehow.

my bro grew in the 80's and when i told one of his best friends (and most loyal) about it, he cut me off even tho he still sold to his friend. now that i grow, i can see why.

i have also seen another guys grow just starting and have given him pointers. since he is in a wheel chair he can never see my grow show.

i am not legal, far from 15 plants. but i did finally manage to get under the 100 plant felony limit last week. thankfully! it's so hard to trim without making 50 fucking clones of something!!!!

but yeah, here i know two other growers who have cards to be legal, and stupidly, they have 100s of plants too. neither will ever narc me off, and neither has been to my house. they gave me clones tho, so they know wassup.

but yeah, you dont tell people shit, for the most part. my nephew doesnt even know and he is 30 years old.

really depends on how much risk you are comfortable with. each additional person that knows you grow is just adding to that risk, even if they have never been to your house, police can easily get a search warrant from the word of some random asshole

I have to agree. If it were easy to get an arrest warrant based on the word of random assholes, we'd hear a lot more stories about completely innocent ex-girlfriends (or boyfriends, or the guy who is currently fucking your ex-girlfriend, or boyfriend) getting their doors kicked in based on vindictive liars.

I haven't been in the mix for a long time but before I decided to launch my small grow, I made a set of rules that if I adhere to, I thought, would help me to avoid detection. The first rule was to keep my mouth shut. "Loose lips sink ships!" Other than my wife, nobody else needs to know.

Bragging or showing off never did anyone ever good. Most people that I know that have been ripped or busted brought it upon themselves because they didn't keep their mouth shut. I can't remember where I read it but someone used the analogy of money and plants. They said something along the lines of: You wouldn't dream of showing off stacks of cash in a safe would you? Your garden is no different.

I am from The Valley too and just off the top of my head I can think of at least 4 people I know who are currently growing and probably 4 or 5 others who used to. Hell, we probably know some of the same people though I'm certain there is a reasonable age difference between us.

The mountains are definitely a completely different culture there compared to other places. I was fortunate enough to meet a very talented grower in my youth while living there and parlayed that into more and more over the years. Hell, there was a time when I'd be throwing a party with dozens of heads at my place and the bro's would be upstairs taking lines off the beer mirrors and marveling at our porchside bag seed. Just something that wasn't a concern because everyone was cool. Didn't get caught then so I guess they were...

Fortunately the friends I did have who fell down into the harder drugs have managed to rebound but even they recognize that the hard shit changed them, took something away, and they'll never feel quite the same again. Sucks to see it down there and with the homeless population being what it is there will always be the demand and the supply of the crazy hard shit that is far too easy to find in SC.

When it comes to meeting new people I always take it slow and easy. Not that I'm advertising... but these people don't know who I am or where I'm from... and even if they did it's not like there aren't other layers of security to keep out prying minds. Do what you can to ensure they never know where your grow or stash are and I really don't see any issue to being friendly with another grower. I think it's too bad that the "criminal" aspect of this compound has resulted in so much fear and anxiety over something we should be all able to share together. Not that I'm suggesting all growers just "come out of the closet." There's never any problem error on the safe side but I think if you're smart then you can be safe and still be "somebody" in the growing community.

I figure if Subcool can publish two books featuring his genetics and strains then you should be able to make a rational decision about talking to another grower. There is an equal amount of risk for both people, so don't pick the loose of lip of course, but in my world (where I come from at least) there's a little more latitude. I'm not in Florida, I'm not in DC... If I were then I wouldn't say shit to anyone so I think this question will always be more situational than anything. Use your best judgment I think.

Lol dude you need to improve your trimming speeds clearly!! If you cannot do 4-5lbs by yourself in 2 days work max something is very wrong or you must have the most leafy strain on the planet.

I was at a party last night and met someone I who obviously grows (and may even be a fellow icmagger), and from the sound of things they have a substantial grow going. They were more or less on the down low about it but there were several things that gave it away that I won't go into here. Seemed like a cool enough dude, but I really try to limit my interactions with other people I know (or suspect) grow to as few as possible for security reasons.

i don't want to be within 100 yards of anyone that is so obvious about there business particularly when its illegal. i don't give a fuck if he seemed like a nice guy or not. a good personality doesn't mean he wont sing like a bird when his door eventually gets kicked in, and believe me it will if he is that obvious and going to parties.

i don't even care to associate with to many other smokers especially people that are very open about it or look like they just got back from a greatful dead show. it's just more unwanted attention. keep a respectable look and keep to yourself.

It also depends where you live & the attitude of the population to Cannabis, where we reside I would not want to be a "friend" of anybody that tells about growing cannabis just at a party!
But then again ten years for one plant & a life term a real threat, means it's really not something you want people to know about, probably would help if I would cut my hair, but f it I'll live the way I want, "You don't like the way this old country boy lives , you can just leave me the F alone"

please enlighten me. im not being sarcastic or anything i really want to know some tricks if you have any. i can get roughly 1-1.5 p per person per day but anything more than that is brutal on your eyes. i can only trim for a couple hours before i need a break because of double vision. i was going to buy a trimmer but if you have trick to get 5ps in 2 days im all ears. i hate trimming...i can get 5 ps in 2 days with 4 people but not 1.
