Fungus gnats or WINGED ROOT APHIDS???

That's cool , but a soil drench would be preferable, unlike what Beta said. This is the root aphid thread, and the treatment is Imid. It is both safe and effective, however a drench is preferable and you should not see anything living after awhile. It breaks their life cycle.

guess I'll have to do a drench, the pests seem like they are almost gone, but I sure don't want them back they did enough damage!!!!!!!!!:plant grow:

i used bayer tree and shrub in excess of what was recommended and soaked longer than advised in DWC thinking the imid once and done would work. just to be safe a week later i also used bayer complete and spectracide. the RA's still are returning to the buckets a couple weeks later. has anyone heard of the micro RAs not responding to imid? it seems like everyone else that used bayer has great success. i even saw tons of RAs on my spireas and burning bushes outside (not the micros but black colored aphids) and used the bayer on those and it knocked those guys right out! i dont know what to try next? i remember seeing a suggestion to foliar feed imid......may try that but im thinking of going to a different medium that is easier to apply these products if i cant get rid of these things.

No question, RAs are tougher to get rid of in DWC.
Very easy in coco.
Foliar is how farmers do it to their crops.
If you have them outside in your garden, they might be reinfecting you. Flyers can get in the house from outside.

yes they are tough to rid in DWC - i think its a good time to try something different anyway and if they come back i can treat them more effectively.

I fought RA for the longest time. Went through 1-1/2 bottles of Botanigard ES and they are GONE! I also got my plants down to the bare minimum. Haven't seen any on the roots of my soil plants or any fliers. I am a total believer in Botanigard ES at 1oz per gallon.

I believe you can get root aphids in any organic medium......soils, ammendments, conditioners...etc. I think mine came from a bag of Ancient Forest.

I'm hoping this is the last time I use Bayer. I've heard good things about SNS-203 and Safer 3 in 1. Both of those products are much cleaner. They're also a bit cheaper than Botanigard. Who here wants a cheap, natural alternative to Bayer that is at least as effective? I know I do.

so i have 2 dwc buckets left in flower then i am done with that method for now. i am going to try coco next and during the transition i have flowered two plants in 6" rockwool cubes and have my mothers in rockwool also.

i want to mention that i have been dealing with (on my MJ)what people on here call micros. these are the very tiny aphids that are white or even clear looking in color. i have had these in the rockwool and DWC buckets. i also noticed a few weeks ago that some burning bushes in my backyard had black aphids on them and they were killing the bushes. not sure if they were on the roots also but they were much larger than the micros and black and were gathered on the ends of the new growth. i treated the bushes with bayer tree and shrub one time and the burning bushes look great now and no aphids in sight. on the other hand, i have treated these micros several times with IMID and they keep returning. i know it is hard to treat in DWC but now when i treat something in rockwool, how are these things still surviving? i have read on other forums people saying some RAs are not dying from IMID. im not sure which aphid type they are talking about though. any thoughts on the micros not responding to IMID?

" Very easy in coco." - i hope you're right RetroGrow. these things are really driving me crazy

root aphids are easy to fix

its these damn fungus gnats i cant get rid of!!!!

been using mosquito dunks in my resevoir; ammending my coco with mosquito dunks; daily watering with gognats; sticky traps; small bowl of red wine; (this has cut down on the gnats greatly but they are still hanging around)

anything i havent tried??

i even cut the grow down for 2 months and this got rid of every bug EXCEPT the fungus gnats; they just come back again and again and again; major headache i need some help please

looks like a fungus gnat to me; get some yellow sticky traps and see if you catch any; will make them easier to identify

Root aphids definitely not easy to fix.
My last run was with hempy buckets, using perlite.
Did not see a single fungus gnat.
They do not like perlite.
Use as a top dressing.

doesn't work for me because im using coco and they will just fly up into the drainage holes and lay eggs; i used to do that and i would put an inch of perlite on bottom of bags as well; doesnt really seems to eliminate the problem but certainly cuts down on the amount of gnats; i am looking for a full on knockout of the gnats 100%

i got some info about gnatrol; seems to be more concentrated than regular dunks so i ordered some up,

and about the root aphids; i had them before, didnt mean to make them sound like a trivial problem because they arent; but i was trying to reference the fact that they went away when i cut my plants down for 2 months, cleaned the room; and the aphids never came back -- however the gnats showed up again right away when i started back up.

someone please help me understand this. i treated 4 - 6" rockwool cubes yesterday with a solution of 3 tbsp per gal spectracide triazicide, 15 ml per gal of both bayer complete and bayer T&S. i soaked each cube in a bucket so they were totally submerged for ~40mins each. i wanted to give these plants imid and have a contact killer. also note 2 of these cubes are mothers and were treated with bayer T&S about a month ago. these are the little micros i am talking about.

so today when i check the cubes, there are still RAs crawling around if i look very close. how can these things live still after the spectracide and bayer complete contact killer? i am totally stumped. i know the imid takes time to work but if some plants were treated before, how can they eat the roots and live? these things WONT DIE:wallbash:

Hey MM,
same experience for me, they made me put away the hydro. Used the same products as you, they made a dent but didnt work.
didnt try this in my hydro but problem solved now , with bayer 2in1 rose granules 8-12-6? active ingredient is disulfoton and it works. be careful tho its strong one capful does 20 pots so just a little in your hydro should work, then use immunox on the plant leaves to kill fliers, raid safe for plants for stragglers(not on the the plants),no more bugs in my pots at all any more

The contact killer in Bayer Complete does not kill RAs. It kills fungus gnats and other stuff, but only imid kills RAs, and it takes a while. It has to be absorbed by the plant, and when the RAs feed on the inoculated plant, they die, but it can take a few days to see results. You should also try spraying your plants with imid solution.
It gets absorbed through the leaves.

i heard about this stuff on another forum but i could not find where to get it. i still cannot find it even on their website. the 2 in 1 for rose from bayer on the site shows the active ingredient as imid and its 6-9-6. i cant remember but i think i read they dont make it anymore with that chemical. how long ago did you get it or do you have a link where i can buy it?

EDIT- it was on this forum i read about it and it was you! LOL
after searching the bayer site it seems they use imid in the 2in1 rose granules now. i went to home depot this morning and looked at every bottle to see if anything had disulfoton and no luck.........
i started looking at the bayer 2in1 they had which was only 3 bottles but the one in the very back was an old one! the one with disulfoton!! so now if i want to try this stuff, i need to figure out how to apply it to rockwool cubes. i am going to wait a little while first to see if my previous treatment with imid works

i didnt know the contact killer in bayer complete didnt kill the RAs but just the other stuff. i may be ok then since the treatment in the rockwool cubes should be much more effective than when i did it in DWC

thanks!

I use my blocks SEVERAL times, and recycled rockwool can add to the problems.

I'm guessing they can live on dead and dying roots when needed so,, I'm experimenting with microwaving the blocks after harvest, 12 minutes at 20-30% - when they come out, they are really warm. (the 6" blocks) - That should kill all living R/A's and eggs, so that should put a damper on the numbers. Lets let the lil peckers try to get immune to 160 deg. F.

I did try flushing the blocks with Imid - but I'm not sure how much gets into the root with no top. One can argue it should soak in - but - I had bug issues again,,,

I didn't think about total submersion and drowning them till just now,,,,,,, HMMMMMMMM. Or freezing.

Perpetual harvest gardens can also make cross contaminations. Dose the plants during veg. and do so long enough and strong enought to cover 2 generations at least, maybe 3 or 4.

They can be beat. ya just need little bitty whips.

back to the dungon

I'm hearing more and more people having trouble with "black flying bugs" - going to change the name to The Black Plague

MM kmart has it so does diy( a whole huge display shelf of just that) its not dicontinued out here but being promoted, any way the one bottle u scored should be plenty.

Dont use to much!!!
sprinkle it like its hot pepper
one cap does 20 5gal nursery pots for.
one cap on one plant will stunt or kill it.
