Netherlands to ban tourists from marijuana 'coffee shops,' concerns over Amsterdam to

Niet lullen maar poetsen, never heard of that saying, probably it means the same as geen woorden maar daden which is more used in that area like hard voor weinig nooit chagrijnig.:D

Oh and Australia... It's weather is awesome and the beaches... well man you'll just have to get there to believe just how great they are.

Yep, with water creatures ( Irukandji jellyfish, salt water crocodile etc)which gives you a flight to the other dimension.High UV-index which is very good for your plants, but for most humans a real pain in the ass.

New Zealand, Australia are great countries to visit, not overcrowded, but again in the big cities no coffeeshops to buy some good marijuana to enjoy in the nice sun with a nice glass of Belgium beer like most do here in Holland.

True but then no coffeeshops in Holland soon either:) And hey I like Graves remember. Can't say as I've ever had too much of a taste for alcohol. Bad white mans magic - kills indigenous people - just look at the poor old Australian 'Aborigine' (which by the way there is no such thing as an Australian Aborinal)

Coffeeshops will be changed into wietclubs for members only, but this will never happen.
Don't forget that the curse for the white man is tobacco and cannabis is a blessing for everyone.:)

seems to me that to ban all but locals in Coffeeshops would create a huge black market with associated problems

The way i see it,i always wanted to go,and then i finally did. was i blown away?
no. was it cool? yes. i certainly felt more free and less watched. wasnt the reason for going in the first place? a little more freedom. so if they want to take that away, thats there loss.

With all the talent in cali and beyond, who needs it., i certainly didnt like getting 75 cents on the dollar( now its 60 cents on the dollar) there are so many more places id rather go then there. it will be there loss for sure since theres so much tourist money they will be losing.

Ban On Tourists In Dutch Cannabis Cafes To Begin Jan. 1

Radio Netherlands Worldwide
Foreign visitors will be banned from the "coffee shops" which sell cannabis in southern Netherlands starting January 1, supposedly to combat "anti-social behavior" among tourists. (So when do the tourists get banned from bars?) The ban won't hit Amsterdam, however, until a year later, in 2013.

The Dutch Justice Ministry announced the ban was going forward after a consultation period, despite opposition from some MPs who called the move "tourism suicide, reports Travelmail Reporter at the Daily Mail.

Licensed coffee shops will be considered private clubs under the new rules. Their maximum of 2,000 members will be limited to Dutch residents 18 and older who carry a so-called "dope card."

The idea of a cannabis card was suggested in September 2010 by the center-right government of Prime Minister Mark Rutte. The cards will be required by Dutch visitors who visit the country's 670 licensed coffee shops.

"The measure will come into force for the (southern) provinces of Limburg, North-Brabant and Zeeland, the provinces most affected by drug tourism, on January 1," said Charlotte Menten, spokeswoman for the Justice Ministry.

The cities in the southwest, close to the Belgian border, say their coffee shops attract 25,000 Belgian "drug tourists" a week, reports Radio Netherlands Worldwide -- a source of nuisance and irritation to many of the locals, who evidently don't want all the money the tourists bring to town.

The rules will come into force for the rest of the country -- including Amsterdam, famed for its wide-open marijuana scene -- in January 2013.

Stuff Stoners Like
The interior of a Dutch coffee shop
The policy's stated aim is to reduce the number of public disturbances and also the number of drug pushers said to cater to the millions of foreign tourists 2who visit the Netherlands to enjoy its relaxed marijuana laws.

But of course, as anyone who's spent more than five minutes studying the history of drug prohibition already knows, driving the demand underground results in more illicit drug pushers, not fewer, and also removes any semblance of government control of the situation.

There are an estimated 220 coffee shops in Amsterdam alone. They have become popular tourist magnets.

Several of them are located in the red light district, where prostitution is also legal.

There are well-founded fears that by banning foreigners from the cafes, Dutch residents, who are allowed to possess up to five kilograms of marijuana, could sell to hapless tourists at wildly inflated prices.

Some MPs have also sensibly argued that Amsterdam stands to lose millions in tourism as visitors choose other destinations.

There were complaints that banning foreigners from the coffee shops was discriminatory, but the European Court of Justice upheld the decision, claiming it was justified "by the objective of combating drug tourism and the accompanying public nuisance."

Let's see how much they miss that "public nuisance" when those millions of dollars of tourist money aren't "bothering" them any more.

Though technically still illegal in the Netherlands, the country decriminalized the possession of less than .18 ounce of marijuana in 1976 under a "tolerance" policy.

Coffee shops, starting with the iconic "Mellow Yellow," were seen as a useful way to control the use and sale of drugs starting in the 1970s. They allowed people to walk in off the street to buy cannabis rather than funneling money into the black market.

It's the free spirited culture that is appealing.. I think they will see the hit they take in there pocket and rethink it.. And maybe if the tourists were not such arrogant assholes it mite help...aka cali kids!!Long live free Amsterdam....

hehehe, yeah, we dig our own graves.

talked to a couple from amsterdam, who said the reason for this, was that the tourists were so much trouble (people shitting on the streets and stuff like that..)

so probably they are hoping to get rid of the troublesome tourists with this and keeping the "normal" tourists (seriously think they are overestimating their humid city and its old paintings though :))

but they make a good point though, locals can still smoke and the rest of the planet should just wise up and follow suit.

cant say the few hollanders i spoke with on my trip there were much impressed with the intelligence of the rest of the world in these matters.

but judging by what those folks said, i doubt they will go back on their words.
takes a shitload of money to make up for people shitting in your streets lol..

probably are just delaying this to give the businesses time to change.

heh, didnt like the city much in august, bit chilly and humid (to be fair, i dont like cities lol)
expensive too :)

but yeah, i agree with osbc, i did dig the people i met there. openminded and wise. (not saying i dug all of them (amsterdam is somewhat money oriented for my tastes))

it was really cool smoking infront of cops too :) but i went there by accident (stopover)
and wouldnt go again. (not fond of cities :)) (plenty of places where i can smoke freely and never even see a cop)

haven't been keeping up with news about coffee shops for the last coupla years. goes without saying i was quite shocked to read about these plans. that's what you get when conservatives are pulling the strings. "clubs" my god, such a shitty idea...

if this law goes ahead and only some coffee shops get extra time, i absolutely must visit amsterdam next year. the last time i was there, summer -09 and four times before that. so many good memories... sampling weed that's not so easy to find here *ahem* blueberry hash

this world is heading completely wrong direction, let me tell ya.

I was in the NL a few times now and spent almoost probably almost a year there during the last 10 years. I really do think that those weed kids visiting amsterdam should stay away or learn to behave...hell i was a turist and I was ashamed about the things those kids were doing....I think baning turists from the shops is a bad idea.... But i do think that that an age limit for coffeshops would be more then needed and im not saying 18 here since we were all big kids at 18...21 would mybe be ok but if i could pick a age limit id say 24-25+ That should be the age limit...for entering and buying weed in coffee shops....

I went for 4/20 in 2007.

It had it's moments...all in all, it was a cool trip...there used to be an active forum called VirtualDam, and after posting on there I met up with a good number of individuals from the forum who also went for 4/20. Eclectic group of people, a doctor from az, an older couple from the west as well, 2 younger guys from norway, a bunch from the UK, etc. Met the dude who runs http://www.coffeeshop.freeuk.com/ (I believe this is his site) too....kinda funny as I had no idea who they were but because i was SO HIGH, I ended up in an unknown part of Amsterdam with him and his wife at some Thai restaurant in which nobody spoke english. How that happened, I'll never know. I honestly can't vouch for how they were as individuals, I really don't remember, I just remember he was british and both of their teeth were really, really fucked up.

Anyway...like I said met a lot of cool people, got super stoned, enjoyed the RLD, walking through it at 3am with random internet people stoned as fuck....did get a BJ too from a really, really, really really hot chick. Don't know how I feel about it, as I did pay for it, but at the same time I wasn't aware of what was really going on....early 20's, never traveled before, alone, 3am, pocket full of cash and weed, and never smoked quality at that time (as it was one of the reasons I went)...some NYCD and caramello hash had me tore up.

Mid-April, the weather sucked. If I remember right, 30-40F was the temp. As I was leaving towards the end of April, it did hit about 50 on the day before I left, go figure. I was walking one night and a group of black 'thugs' purposely walked towards me and bumped into me, as if wanting to start a fight by hitting shoulders. I turned around and I was about 20 feet away, they said something which I didn't even hear and then I just yelled back something to the effect of 'make a move, motherfucker' and they just looked and kept on walking. Had many of them follow me trying to sell me coke, too. I yelled some russian shit at one dude and he bolted.

At that time, a round trip ticket was $800 I believe. Yeah...go check the prices now.
HUGE costs + harassment by TSA, fuck that shit man. If I find the need to fly, rather do it for much cheaper (ie, Cali) Not to mention I spent over 48 hours at airports due to delays coming home. They lost my luggage too.

Although there were some drop dead gorgeous women at london's heathrow...didn't see many hot women in amsterdam though, like walking around and stuff. Although I didn't go that many places, who wants to walk a lot when stoned? Wasn't gonna fuck with a bike.
