for those using tomhills mix or similarly hot mixes: i re-amended some used super soil to fill my containers with tomhills recipe and plugged in 1 gallon starts. i locked up my plants and they started clawing and yellowing like classic N overdose. i had to pull em out and remove a bunch of hot and replace with plain roots and bio bizz light to weaken the mix. were my starts simply to small to handle this mix? or was it possible that the used super soil still had a bit too much ferts left in it to re-amend it with the tomhill recipe. i also did one container at 1/2 strength because i didnt have time to let it cook and that was too strong as well.

What's up I rock "Toms Mix" At 1/2 strength and my plants are TEARING. The secret is to put a buffer of regular non amended potting soil around your plant so it can get some roots set up before it goes out in to the 'Hot Zone' ... What is probably happening is the generator of soil is probably pruning your roots off.

i'm running tom's mix full strength for the first time, this statement made me feel a little sick. hahah. sorry for your troubles.

how long did you cook??

when i plug my beds they will have been cooking for just over 3 weeks, also the mix had been mixed for 2 weeks prior sitting out in the rain.. i will be doing a buffer of happy frog, like TG recommended as well. hopefully i don't run into any problems. i'll report back my experience. never have i added this much chicken and bone. i need to get a soil thermometer and check down in those beds before i plug.

If you see steam, smoke, haze and vapors coming out of it, put a real good buffer, and dont light a cigarette, just to be safe. Ok, Im kiddin:laughing:. Im using last years holes. I did a 1 hour till job and Im in the ground today. Im just going to feed with every watering to make up for it.

how long after you transplanted did this start happening? i planted 3 strawberry cough's in 15's with a really hot mix not tom's mix my mix is a little hotter this was 3 days ago and they seem to be loving it they are about 20 inches tall and have only been fed straight water and great white mycos. have you checked the ph of ur soil? and how big are the plants?

funnel clouds and heavy hail, with the occasional whip of thunder. it got pretty hairy on wednesday. a friend of mine got caught in a funnel cloud while driving up highway 70, shook his car and almost brought him off the road. minor apocalyptic episode in butte.

i'm so glad i'm still indoors

i stuck a compost thermometer down into my 1st year full strength tom mix, 76 degrees, just under 3 weeks of cooking, maybe i can thank the extra rain and cool climate. anyways, everything is in 3s and 5s, i'll still buffer w/ some happy frog.

For Sunday up here in way NorCal the forecast is 44 F and snow. I don't have an outdoor garden this year but even most common local peeps haven't even planted their veggies yet. We'll wake up one morning soon to 90 degrees and not a drop of rain for 3 months. At least it should be a mild fire season. CrAzY spring weather so far.

I used to think long springs meant better protection from fires but hte bad part about that is the fact the grasses are growing even taller and bushes taller and wider so when they do die they add that much more % of fire prone vegetation to the mix...just some info

hope all the big farmers are doing well

cold night arent too bad for the seed girls, clones are still a week or so from going out..

so far so good, everyting on the right path.......

keep it up...keep it up....

The axis of Earth has moved quite a bit recently. We are no longer in the same place to have the same weather. Remember the Sahara desert was once a tropical forest. It was tropical around the great Pyramids. Our weather will probably be different from here on out.

On a lighter note.. we got half our 300s mixed and ready to plant.. got our costco carport/greenhouse banging with supp lighting and 30 gallon smarties with seed pops.. clones go out next week.. (if weather permits..) :)

i got all my 400s filled and cooked. drip setup, 3/4" mainline to 1/4" inline drip emitter line every 6", plants are all in 3s outdoors and ready to go into beds tomorrow. would of waited til wednesday to plug but some are getting cramped in their 3s. weather forecast shows sunny weather for the next 10 days. it was overcast and rainy today, sunny now...

My older Son lives in Humboldt. His grow was on his buddies private property. They have it deer fenced off, and paperwork posted. Some Rogue Sheriff went on the property this morning, and used my sons machetti and chopped down all his plants. My Son was within his limits too. The Sheriff also said to tell my Son that if he thinks he is going to grow a bunch of vegetables and sell them, he better think twice.(WTF?). This was my older sons first grow. He was blackboxing them and lost his whole crop.
They are going to see a lawyer on tuesday. He just had a baby and is not allowed to grow organic vegetables for his family? He has his grow permit, but cant grow his own Meds?

What? The fucker is going to come back and chop down the corn and tomatoes too?

So i just finished filling all my custom made 200gal smartpots. They are about 12in-18in deep and about 5-6 feet in diameter. Is 12in to shallow? i was reading in the beginning of this forum a quote from Tom Hill saying that 18in is the perfect depth so my question is... 12in to shallow or what?

no you will just water more often so maybe yield more. after 18" the o2 levels deplete so much healthy roots are hard to come by so 18" is a good cut off..
