Are glass vials with corks alright?

IMHO, it all works- just some ways last longer.
The most important thing is that you are keeping & working with seeds! Use what ever makes you happy! Share your experances & maybe we all can find ways that will work better for us.

At one time I used Liq-nitergen= way to much work!!

Great thread with fantastic info - thanks to all for your contributions!

I'm smack in the middle of my first breeding attempts and this thread definitely helped.

Here are some of the crosses I'm trying:

Female X Male

Unknown Euro Hybrid X Kush
Purple X Kush
Grapefruit Haze X Grapefruit Haze
Unknown Euro Hybrid X Grapefruit Haze
Unknown Euro Hybrid X Chitrali
Medijuana X Grapefruit Haze
Medijuana X Chtrali

Great thread and very timely indeed. I have my seeds in a refrigerator and wrapped in paper and sealed, then put inside baggies with desiccants but after reading some of the thoughts herein I will change the procedure and start putting them in the freezer. Putting them into small screw top vials bought over ebay and keeping the count down because of mold seems very prudent also.

Hey everyone,
quick question for anyone who might know,
When is it too late to freeze your seeds for the long term? I have some that will not be used anytime soon, but they are over one year old now, some two years, in dark room temp. Is it too late at this point? will freezing them after this long at room temp mess them up any?
thanks guys...

Two years isn't really that old for seeds, if you put them in the freezer now I say you could still germ them in 5-10 years with out too much germination rate dropping.

Either way like nobull said, it can't hurt them.

Good luck, and let us know down the line what hapens.

Unknown.

Just be damn sure to dry them thoroughly before freezing, otherwise the moisture will be drawn to the outside ripping up tissue on its way out like frozen peas. In fact, dry the shit out of them thoroughly before doing anything with them. This in most environments around the world requires a dehumidifier to do efficiently. -T

Fridge would be your best bet and most simple way to preserve them without losing viability in the next few years. Make sure they are sealed well, kept dry, and kept in total darkness. I'm still popping seeds here kept at 35F for 9 years in the fridge in multiple layers of freezer bags kept in a totally dark jar. Only dessicant used was cotton to absorb any ambient moisture from the seeds themselves. Right above freezing works perfectly and tremendously slows down all biological processes with the embryo stored safely inside the sealed seed shell. If you freeze them you are going to lose some it's inevitable, and once thawed you better grow them because refreezing will cause even more to die. This is not the case with the fridge at 34F - 35F since you are right above freezing so no ice crystals form in the plant tissue and burst cells. :)

For very long term (10 years+) storage freezing is the way to go in a deep freezer the same way biological specimens are kept in some labs, ect. But if you are going to use your seeds in say the next 5 years they should fare very well in the fridge provided they are stored properly and kept at a constant temperature with no excess moisture :canabis:

Thanks Everyone!

Thats great news because some of the seeds are great genetics.

Yesterday I saw a news artical on the internet about some Russian scientists that just germinated a small flowering plant of some kind that was from a squarrels nest frozen in the Siberian permafrost that was over 30,000 years old! The plant is even flowering!

I wonder what cannabis seeds might be frozen waiting to be germinated, or any other cool plants for that matter? lol

Hell if I can keep these for 5-10 years Ill be happy....

I think that if you pollenate over 1/3 to 1/2 of the plant it will be less in most traits, including potentcy.
Is there any truth to this??? I just don't see how this rings true.

Because the plant will put a good part of her energy and nutrients into seed production once pollinated, it is very probable that you won't have sinsemilla quality buds. That's why buds intended for smoking are grown sinsemilla.

Awesome thread, I haven't finished reading yet but I like what I see so far :D I am planning on having a separate area for males so that I can grab the pollen sacks off of them and save them like in the post with the blue silica gel balls so I'm glad I found this thread :D

I haven't looked at this in a while and I want to retract the freezer comment; I intended to say Fridge, but I guess I had a case a typerrhea.

Not saying you can't throw them in the freezer for long term storage, but as Tom, SOTF, and I would suggest...a fridge is a great environment for keeping germination rates up.
