Hate to break it yas, but NASA had diddly-squat to do with the development of cellphones......

Motorola and NASA have a long standing history. To say that NASA technologies had no effect or contribution is less than specious, it's just nonsense.

what i find interesting is the similarity to the ancient astronaut/Nibiru story,in relation to 2012 supposedly being the end, blah blah blah(I remember 1999) Then here we have the spokesperson saying 2012 is when this study will reveal the interesting stuff, its like it was timed to coincide with all the stories and propechies. Makes sense, I mean theres bound to be people high up in NASA who are believers.

it's funny, our money and there profit.. so who's getting the real contribution here?

and what has cell phones done to humans advancement really? seems like a backwards step when "it might cause brain tumors" , makes people drive worse, people looking like crackheads talking to themselves with there little ear piece.. or is it the multitasking feature where you ignore what your doing in the moment, so you can plan another time to do something where you talk on your cell phone again?

we were completely fine without cell phones 15 years ago, or did we all just live in a miserable world before that..

the walk in the woods was shit without being able to contact my brother and ask him what he had for dinner

the night out in Paris was shit without my cell phone to call my friends to say how much fun I was having,

the camping was shit when I couldn't call buddy and ask him how to cook the fish I caught,

the movie theater was so boring to watch a movie for two hours straight without being able to tell my friend I'll see him tomorrow,

disneyland, forget it, complete shit without being able to check my email, tracking my package that's gonna sit at my door anyways because I'm on vacation

you guys are funny.. I would reply to all the posts about schools but I'm bored now.. so I'm gonna go tweet on my phone what a loser tyra banks is........... HAHA

Jeez...like 1 of the last 10+ posts kind of on topic...lol.

For me I'm like...there's some major chunk of something in space and NASA (Cornell it seems also) is just recognizing it? Jeez...even Shoemaker-Levy found something probably MUCH smaller way out there in space long before that string hit Jupiter and they saw that like 15+ years ago and they were amateurs compared to NASA.

from the info i saw, the bodies/distance were supposed to be a limits of previous imaging technology
or on the edge, that why this new system has been deployed
but i'd be surprised if there is a brown dwarf(or something like it), maybe something a bit smaller

If there really is a brown dwarf star gonna swing through the hood...look out! The density/gravitational pull of an entity like that would be ridiculous compared to a plain ole comet or asteroid. I mean seriously...a cooled off star? Anything is possible. Virtually ALL references to this event are fringe.

Brown dwarfs are objects which have a size between that of a giant planet like Jupiter and that of a small star. In fact, most astronomers would classify any object with between 15 times the mass of Jupiter and 75 times the mass of Jupiter to be a brown dwarf. Given that range of masses, the object would not have been able to sustain the fusion of hydrogen like a regular star; thus, many scientists have dubbed brown dwarfs as "failed stars".
Man some crazy stuff going on out in the universe for sure. So something at least 15 times the mass of Jupiter is gonna pass close by?

i'm not too fond of this idea, gives me an uncomfortable feeling
but if it's there, it's been there quite a while, hasn't killed us(the earth) yet
but yeah, it's a freaky thought

Every Country on Earth should spend Zero on Defense and all its money on Space Exploration. There is no greater human achivement than being able to explore space..

Not investing in space exploration and expansion equates to species suicide in the long run. Since the time frame that this planet will support life is finite. Fact. Try to look beyond the tip of your nose.

I too am all for space exploration....

BUT.....only once we mature as a fucking species and actually learn how to live on THIS fucking planet in a sustainable manner that is viable in the long term.........because otherwise all our space exploration is just shopping around for another planet to shit all over, rape, exploit and leave barren. This is NOT the behavior of a mature, intelligent species that is headed for nor merits long term survival.

Not to mention with the way we are going now, we simply do not have the time to be able to achieve any of significance in terms of colonizing space, because we are trashing our only home way faster than we can escape it.

Seriously....fuck space exploration AND military spending for the next 50 years...put it all into truly sustainable living technology....with emphasis on smarter, simpler lower level tech that lets us actually enjoy life, instead of chasing some malignant parasitic ideal that we have been trained to value, whilst making those who trained us richer and more powerful than anyone should ever be.

weve had the technology and way to be self sustained for the last 25 years... the powers of be wont let it happen of course...

if the human species was only about the advancement of the human race as a whole and protecting our enviroment it could be done no problem decades ago....

its just not that simple... greed. greed.and more greed.... runs the world.

There is nothing evil about advanced technology. It is what our civilization does with it that devalues life. Move to Italy for a year, have a cell phone and tell me that the cell phone or your computer or whatever other piece of tech is the problem. We have chosen to live in the manner in which we do and we can equally choose not to. It is up to us to make that decision.

You can't tell me nuclear technology isn't evil.

It sure does make cheap electricity but where do we store the evil, I'm sorry, I mean... um... neutral toxic waste?

The first thing we did with it was destroy.... I'm not saying we aren't trying to help ourselves with it now... but it certainly does stand to reason that advanced technology is evil in the hands of those not prepared for it.

Keep a view ;)

Nuclear technology is not evil. Just because something produces a byproduct that is dangerous doesn't mean that it is evil. We could revolutionize the world through the use of nuclear power. We have the ability to dispose of it but it is costly, thus we don't do it. Nuclear power by itself could help to elevate the developing nations thereby widening the pool of talent yet again and bettering humanities long term prospects and goals. Again, what is evil is what is done with something, the thing in and of itself is not evil, it is humans that give it those attributes in a causational relationship.

Perhaps it would help to clarify "unadvanced advanced technology" or "not advanced ENOUGH technology" could certainly be considered evil, especially in light of humans' development.

Nobody is suprised when DDT is proven harmful.

Nobody cringes when we realize that our water system is full of pharmaceuticals.

Hindsight is 20/20... but most don't give a shit anyway.

Let's plunge headlong into the future and whatever we do we can't admit we make wrong turns left and right!

Evil is just a state of mind.

No one here is saying we haven't made mistakes and that we don't continue to make mistakes. The idea that we wouldn't make mistakes implies somehow that we are infallible and we all know that isn't true. What I am saying is that technology and advancement are not evil in and of themselves. It is our failure to do due diligence that leads to our mistakes. Sure we could think it through and realize that pumping everything around us full of antibiotics is a bad idea but hey we didn't do that even though some scientists warned it would happen. Every doctor and veterinarian just pulled out their Rx tablet and gave em out like planned parenthood gives out condoms. Technology doesn't make our lives better in and of itself, it is the goal of technology to do so but it is the societies implementation of technology that determine's its impact.

We need to take a hard look at how we live and the myths that are so pervasive in this country about how great it is and how we have the best everything and that our quality of life so wonderful etc. We have for the most part failed to use technology to ease the burden of our lives in terms of the goal of happiness and a good life and have instead aimed everything at productivity and profitability which has hindered us in every regard as a people. Not to get political or anything.

I think that was very well said Zen.

That nails it.

I don't know what technology could do to stop an asteroid or something like that hitting the earth or preventing the Yellowstone super volcano from going off. Ultimately nature trumps anything we can do.

Would be wild to be alive when the earth gets nailed again though if we don't destroy it first.

We don't use hydrogen power because it is costly, and we still don't do it... even though it doesn't produce toxic waste.

What I'm getting at is the same point you are, we don't have the proper motivation for innovation... and will always make concessions on the side of fatal if the price is right.

We can agree to disagree on whether or not it's evil.

Since this thread probably won't stay on topic...there's some major problems with hydrogen power. First is if you make hydrogen from petro sources like coal and burn it you'll end up with planetary oxygen depletion. Hydrogen must be made from water. Then it's the dealio of how much energy 'in' is necessary to crack the water compared to get the potential energy 'out'. I believe there are some smaller solar powered systems that crack water. I don't see hydrogen as a solution to the world's energy problem...at least not at this point in the technology development. We don't use hydrogen power because it's not really practical IMO regardless of cost.

No 'thing' is evil because it is inert without intelligence...it just 'is'. Radioactive particles are not evil they are just radioactive.

Electrolysis, geothermal, solar....

You don't need petroleum for energy... you must live in America :D

We can agree to disagree too, if you want ;)

It isn't the motivation for innovation that is lacking, it is the willingness for business to take new technology and make it widely applicable. The fiscal ability of something to be done is generally what makes it available simply because without that fiscal incentive, the only ones working on it would be the scientists whose area of expertise it is. Innovation happens every day in a lab or science department, but without the ability for the idea to break even or provide a surplus the incentive simply isn't there. We can choose to do things that are "cleaner" if we so desire but we have to recognize that the fiscal impacts will be excessive. It is a moral decision I am not sure we are comfortable with as a country. As to something being evil, I think the two of us have different definitions of evil, but we may agree to disagree since that is easier.... like it is easier to burn coal and fossil fuels than power the world on wind and solar energy. :)
