I would like to see a picture of this device myself. Not for verification that the story is true. But rather so I know what to look for if I decide to purchase new gear. I see no reason a crooked hydro shop working with the pigs wouldn't do this to unsuspecting people. If no pic, is threre anything you can share about who made the gps unit? How did Tom or whoever determine it was in fact a tracking device?

I spoke to Tom the other day and brought up this thread and some of the responses.
I had not even spoken out yet when Tom interrupted me saying: "But you did not post those pictures did you?"
I told him I probably/likely would have posted them if they weren't on my laptop @ my house in Cali.
He did not like that, he wants to keep a low key about this. When I asked him why all he said was he doesn't know why but it makes him feel better.

However I will try to help you:

I went on Google and got a generic picture (see below) of how the thing looked like.
It was simply hardwired to the circuit within the ballast, I say this was for supplying it with electricity to avoid having to use a battery which would eventually run out.
As I already posted there was a little hole in the bottom (underside) of the base with a thin insulated wire through it (the same kind you find dangling lose on the back of cheaper stereos). That wire was attached to the outside perimeter of the ballast but on the underside of it.
Describing how the wire was attached makes total sense (to me) since the ballast was heavy and who would turn it upside down for what reason. And even if someone did the wire would have been almost impossible to spot since the bead of silicone was concealing it real well and the silicone looking like it was part of the base.

As far as how Tom knew it was a GPS unit this was part of the conversation I had with him.
In my original thread I posted Tom studying becoming an electrical engineer but it turns out that's not how he knew.
All he had to do to find out was look inside the little box where there were a few numbers, the word GPS and what turned out to be a brand name: TELIT
You put the search terms "TELIT & GPS" in to Google and it will spit out about 8,120 results showing their products.

Hope this helps.

Oh and for those doubters:

More food for thoughts for you guys!

Two concerns about this first how well do you think a GPS works from inside a steel box (kinda hard to hide a external antenna in a light kit) and second you would think that if one was smart enough to wire this up that you would make sure it works before sending it out because the last thing you want is someone taking it apart to see what the problem is

Just what i was thinking. How are you going to rob or bust a grow if none of the lights work???

Dont make any fuckign sense....i think someone owns a hydro shop and would rather see people by all new equipment than the tons of used gear i see on craigslist...

I have played with GPS loggers..not Trackers.
From my understanding: A "Tracker" not only records GPS information in the module but it also "Transmits" information. (typicaly via cell account) In order to "Transmit" the module MUST contain account specific information. Is Tom and his EEET/IIIT buddies working on extracting the account specific information from the module? :)

edit:added triple I cause Software People should get extra vowels too!

Seems like we got better ballasts in europe.
The Vossloh Schwabe ballasts are just great, there is no place to put a gps :)

What the fuck? You should post pics of those people on well known cannabis websites. They don't deserve to breathe the same air as us. Fucking piece of shit thiefs!

Trust you? We don't even know you! You cannot make a statement like that without proof. There is sooooo much misinformation in this thread that it's not even funny. Proof damn it, we want proof!

In Richmond, CA there were hella random home invasions with people looking for indoor grows. They hit a couple spots, but a lot of the other ones were not grow houses. Maybe they used GPS to track the houses, but it wasn't exact. Like it didn't say anything about addresses, but rather gave a location on a street and they had to guess which house. Just stoned speculation.

It is the internet dude........there is nothing to prove.

It's not about the advice that is given........it's about what is taken.

But i don't think you understand......without proof.
