Yeah,I cannot do it myself.
I'm talking about the main power panel for the entire house so I have to get the power co. Out here to unlock the meter to pull out to be Able to swap the old one out.
If you need the main power to the house cut you can easily and safely do that yourself.
And here is how:
Up on your power pole there is a about 2 foot long fuse. It is the disconnect switch or transformer main fuse, sometimes called high voltage fuse cutout. It will barely blow unless hit by lightning etc. and even then they often stay closed.
They all look like this:
So what does this mean for you?
Simple:
You can try to hunt down a fiberglass pole of the kind the electricity company uses for pulling open that switch manually.
Or you can go and buy a few lengths of rigid PVC pipe, glue them together, attach a hook @ the end (I have used duct tape to attach the hook) and pull open that disconnect switch.
Then do what you gotta do @ your main breaker panel and when done close the disconnect switch giving it a good push back close.
Remember by pulling open that switch ALL the power the transformer has been supplying has been disconnected. If it is more than your place being connected to the transformer you need to have disconnected I recommend doing this kind of work in the middle of the night or when your neighbors are not @ home, not during a football game or NASCAR race they might be watching.
The whole procedure takes about 10 seconds.
PS: when you re-connect the disconnect switch you don't have to but should have the main breaker on your main breaker panel @ your place in the open position. Close it once you got the power re-connected up on your transformer.
PPS: Don't do the above procedure when it is raining or foggy or heavy dew. Makes sense huh!?
