Is there still "good" money to be made on gold dredging?

I watched this programme I think it was in Alaska (could have been somewhere else northerly and cold in USA) and there were these guys with homemade dredging machines like on keeneeng.org,

They were dredging out at sea (not very far out) and although it looked like hard work they were getting decent amounts of gold. Not vast lumps, the UK guy who was making the documentary had a go for 1 hour (with the dredgepipe, under the water, while hot water was pumped into his wetsuit....

After 1 hour they took what was dredged and after panning it he was left with around 200 dollars worth of gold

I'd imagine the more skilled dredgers would make more than that, 200 dollars is good. but that would be between at least 2 people, maybe the skilled dredgers could suck up more than 200 an hour

Is gold prospecting only really a hobby now, as theres not enough gold to be dredged anymore?

or is it still a viable business?

Claims in Az all you just had to make X amount of improvements to the land and its yours.
I don't remember all the details but its what was going on out there and probably most places.

they are selling 5-10acrea minig rights for 2k in the sierras, been looking into possibly buying one. you are allowed to even build a small shack for "temporary" housing but its not like they have people enforcing that!

I have 2 claims, here in the Mother Load (Sierras). Why would you buy one? You can stake a claim for a couple hundred dollars or less, by filling with the local county recorder/ and State BLM/Forest Service. (filing fees apply)
There are different types of mining.
I do Hard Rock mining, which is working in (Tunnels/Shafts, and Placer mining (panning,sluice,dredging,high banking, the creeks & rivers. (Dredging is illegal in Cali) but i ran a 2'' & 4'' in tha 90's on the Merced River, and American River.

As for temp housing, let me shoot ya a secret, BLM/Forest service dose not allow any type of living in structure, (No stoves,windows)
You can have a structure for storage of equipment only.
BLM is easier to deal with, Forest Service, has a-lot more rules & regulations.

This is a old shaft, that caved in many years ago. I am in the process of digging it out to get where the ol Timers left off.
From my research, and the amount of taillings, this shaft is approximately 40-50 foot. There are 3 other shafts located within 50 yards from this one, all following the same quartz vain.

Here is two rocks I dug a few weekends ago.

The white rock is quartz, there are some crystals in the rock, with some iron ore mixed in also.
these two rocks had about 5grms of gold.

here's a bit of NY gold trivia, by the laws of the state of of NY, all gold found on land in NY boundaries is owned by the state
that's right, all of it, it's in the state constitution
not that it's come up too often, NY is not famous for its gold deposits

There is no suction dredging allowed in California at this point, the only way to make money Gold Mining in California is Suction Dredging.

This is in Nome Alaska, you lease a portion of the ocean floor for the season and dredge. It is very difficult. All of your equipment has to be shipped up, and be on the barge by May.

The experienced miners running "good" leases can pull out a couple of hundred ounces a week, with a ten man crew and a hundred thousand dollars invested for the season.

Since you can no longer Suction dredge in California, it is just a hobby. There is on 1 working hard rock mine in California. The Sixteen to one mine.

if you had acreage why wouldn't you go for the sure thing? doesn't make sense..the gold miners of old harvested gold for bitter survival..if they could have just grown weed that and sold it for golds price, they would have.

Why would it cost 100k dollars investment to dredge for the year? they could live in those log cabins fairly cheaply, or setup camp(ervan) very cheaply. they already own a dredging machine or two

So where is that 100k going?

And would the police really turn up in the middle of nowhere in shitty weather patrolling the coast for dredgers? i doubt it.

Anyone here want to group together and put say 3.5k each into the $33 000 dredging machine on keener.org, or we could make one, and go out poacher dredging (without a lease)

and with the profits of season 1 we could buy (or make) more dredging machines until there was 1 between 2 people (guy on dredger diver in the sea dredging)

It sure does. To make a living mining for gold, as a small guy, you are going to need to pull out at least an ounce a week. When Suction Dredging was legal in Calif, you could pay for gas, food and lodging and take a few bucks out, if you had a good claim.

Here's what you spend Dredging:

1 Suction Dredge 6 inch ( or 8 inch if allowed) about $6000 outfitted for 2 miners.

Heavy Duty (7 or 9 mil) wet suits about $1000 for a good one (each).

Masks, 80 lbs of lead weight, a couple of hundred dollars (each).

A truck to haul all the $hit.

Daily expenses:

Food & Beer about $50

Gasoline - 10-15 gallons a day @ $4 About $50

Helpers to haul boulders.

Other stuff:

They don't like you living on your claim. Get to know the Sheriff (they don't give a shit what you think).

Get to know all of the laws. Find a lawyer who knows mining law.

these guys were using pretty flimsy dredging equipment too, with not huge hoses, very similar to kleeneeng.org
