Ice-tube cloner from WallyWorld

So finally got around to making one of these after reading the thread in its entirety. Was very very excited. Long story short is after a few days in the cloner the clones started to wilt and got black tips. Used clonex and aquashield in the soak water. The problem probably stemmed from a sickness that affected all my veg plants (since have gotten over took a lot of work but it payed off). From now on will still use this, but the bubble cloner spits out rooted clones in 7 days, and for the size that are taken 27 wont nearly fit in here. The bubble cloner holds 34 med-large clones and is lightproof. Overall review thumbs up just havent gotten deep enough to get it to work yet. Have 5 plus years of experience cloning so this isnt coming from a first timer.

here is a great place to get them with very fast shipping

and here is a version of single tubes for singlets or micro clone jobs

Let me point out the obvious.....

pretty sure the problem was environmental, got hit pretty bad by some sickness, definitely not knocking the method advocate it, just don't have time to use it again for a month or so, next time will try plain tap water and report back. Ime fresh aquashield does no harm. Next time will be in a more sterile environment, peace and burn ur yumbolt

Update: left two of these sick clones in there for the hell it, one grew nice roots pulled at 12 days. def liking the way this thing works. will use it along with the bubble cloner on the next run. another note for a few days this thing was cracker dry in the bottom and pretty hot on top of the cfl fixture, peace and thanks burnt rope u da man for this discovery!

Why ow why can't we get a cloning & mothering forum. I swear it would be so useful. I have suggested it on the appropriate place.

Anyone else agree here?

I am guessing a dome is needed if you rh is less then 50%.
I don't know about 50, but when I got under 20 things REALLY went slow. It was working but taking more like a month to show roots. Normal for me is 10-14 days. At 30-40% things are better but still not as fast as warmer months. I actually came into the thread wondering if anyone else is having low humidity problems? I'm going to try a dome for a few weeks I think.

I'll continue to say it every time I come into this thread. Thanks for this great idea BR!

I've read a few different things... how deep is the water you guys are setting this tray in? Mine is in about 1/2" of water right now, first day. Thx

i find i have better luck keeping my reservoir about an inch to an inch and a half deep, heres a couple pics to illustrate.

the one on the far right is unpainted so easier to see

...and here you can see the residue from algal growth which clearly shows my 'water' line, lol.

hope this helps, SOG

That does help, thanks a lot.

How do you check for roots? Just lift the ice cube tray and peel the cap off?

One thing you might do....

Drill a 1/8th inch hole in each cap....

when you see any roots coming out, you likely have roots in most of them....

However normally as you suggest I peel off the caps on a few and check them out...

Thats only if Im curious....

If I leave the clones in for 14 days.... that sufficient to do the job.....

Running a little cloning test.

On the left, 6 "top" cuts, bigger and thicker stems.

On the right, 6 lower cuts, thinner smaller shoots.

Time to see which roots faster.

Had good luck with this little cloner. Found that waiting an extra long time to pull them and put them into pots was best because the roots will swirl through the vermiculite and allow you to put the entire root/vermiculite "plug" into a hole drilled in the medium.

Good stuff. Thanks.

I am completely sold on this method!! My particular twist on it is as follows: 1) to remove rooted clones, a Highlighter/Magic Marker is the perfect diameter to push it out. 2) I set the cloner w/dry vermiculite into 1" of water, but when the verm. is wet the cloner is removed from the water....verm. holds water well...I don't put it back in the water for about 4 days...when I 1st tried this method I kept the cloner setting in 1" of water 24/7, some of those clones rotted out.

this fits like it was made for the job.

...which of course it was. ...and i got the idea from Burnt Rope, thanks bro.

Myself Ive not seen problems with dampoff.... but Im also a religous user of clonex which contains not only a rooting hormone but antimicrobials as well.....

However my sense is that its not much of a problem......

The bottom line is ...IM glad you found something that works for you......:jump:

oh awesome! ha i remember finding this thread years ago when first looking into cloning. great advice on an in-expensive DIY cloner that actually works pretty well.

for those that were talking about RH, when i was using this i was in an area with about 20-25% RH. Without a dome i was constantly misting them, and still taking 3+ weeks for roots. With a dome, about 14 days.. sometimes under.

but i will say nothing beats sticking a 12"+ cutting into an EZ Cloner and getting roots in 10-14 days.

dome didn't work out for me for space reasons but misting seems to have helped. biggest thing is just running a humidifier in my room and getting the ambient humidity up in the 30+ range. Most everything is going about 2 weeks now for me which is fine. My entire mother plants aren't 6" tall let alone 12. Ha! most my cuts are under 2".
