"I entrust you with the propagation of Buddhism in your province."

Passage from: "The Properties of Rice"
Written to the lay priest Takahashi, date unknown

Background from WND p. 1117

Only a fragment of this letter remains, and its recipient and the date of its writing are not known. It was once thought to represent the concluding portion of The True Aspect of All Phenomena, written on Sado Island in the fifth month of 1273, but in view of its style and content it is now considered to be a fragment of a letter written after Nichiren Daishonin moved to Mount Minobu. Likewise, it is thought that it may have been sent to the lay priest Takahashi Rokuro Hyoe, who lived at Kajima in Fuji District of Suruga Province. Takahashi’s wife was Nikko Shonin’s aunt, and Takahashi and his family appear to have actively supported the propagation movement in the Fuji area.

It is worthy of note that, in closing, the Daishonin entrusts the letter’s recipient with the responsibility for propagation in his province, suggesting that the recipient had strong faith and was a leading figure among the believers in that area.

My understanding of this passage:

From this small fragment portion, we can understand that Nichiren had(s) great compassion, even to those who slandered him and his teaching by saying: "While the rice itself is the same, rice that nourishes a slanderer of the Law supports the life of one who destroys the seeds of Buddhahood, enabling him to become a more powerful enemy than ever. And yet, does it not sustain his life so that he will in the end be won over to the Lotus Sutra?"

Nichiren, states in the passage that he entrusts us to propagate Buddhism in our local community in exact accord with the spirit of his words depicted in his letters of encouragement. Hence, to put the Gohonzon of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo (the LS) as our corner stone of our conviction. He is NOT even once insinuates that our relationship with him is the "corner stone" of his Buddhism therefore we should engage in the practice and propagation of the Law. it is the other way around!

It is for the sake of the LAW that we practice Nichiren's teaching and therefore become in oneness with the mind and life of Nichiren by placing the Gohonzon in the center of our practice first and foremost. All of Nichiren's encouragement are there, so we can attain true enlightenment in this lifetime saying:
"Once you leave the haven of inherent enlightenment, what is there to bring you joy? I pray that you will embrace the Law [Nam-myoho-renge-kyo], which guarantees that people “will enjoy peace and security in their present existence and good circumstances in future existences."

IT is also this way with rice. While the rice itself is the same, rice that nourishes a slanderer of the Law supports the life of one who destroys the seeds of Buddhahood, enabling him to become a more powerful enemy than ever. On the other hand, rice that nourishes the votary of the Lotus Sutra must be rice of the utmost compassion, because it benefits all living beings. This is what is meant by the Buddha’s relics turning into rice. I cannot express my joy at your having sent a messenger all the way here at such a time. Can it be that Shakyamuni Buddha or the Bodhisattvas of the Earth have entered into your body?


I entrust you with the propagation of Buddhism in your province. It is stated that “the seeds of Buddhahood sprout as a result of conditions, and for this reason they preach the single vehicle.”1 If Jibu-bo, Shimotsuke-bo,2 or the others should arrive, I will send them without delay. And if you have an opportunity to see Matsuno,3 please carefully explain what I have said.

sometimes i analogize the buddha as a person who sees an ancient flower (relative truth) in an ancient garden and that he knows this ancient flower has grown from before our birth and will continue grow after our deaths.

the buddha sees the flower in full bloom (enlightend by bodhisatvva nature one is budhha), but the bodhisatvva nature feeds the "soil" (humanity) so that individuals will be so insipired to do the same, including himself.herself, so once the buddha sees the truth how can he not feed the soil selflessly while his body still breaths when he knows what makes it bloom (bring others to enlightenment through selfless giving)

another thing came to being during this discussion

it is that nichiren buddhism encourages us to give collectivelly and i have the feeling that it was as if we are pooling resources to become one in one spirit among many people working together in the bodhisatvva spirit

and I found this quite beautiful because as I testified to them, the spirit of the bodhisatvva for me was inspired by the notion that the garden is being enjoyed by a power and love greater than one we have yet to fully realize and that there was no incongruence in what i believed before and that indeed my desire to give selflessly has not been unrequitted including by the notion that has so insired me

and for me this is most powerful because I know I will never tire from giving selflessly and that what I need will come to me in the accord it needs to and I trust that in the ebb and flow of my being that the energy that is given from the selfless giving will be used as it is need by those who require it because there is no ebb and flow in the law of cause and effect

to you all my deepest and most heartfelt love

its more than just ashes when your dreams come true!

Trichy: I wish you lived closer to me so we could attend meetings together. I'm sure you would fit right in with my girlfriend and all our friends. By going to meeting again, you will surely find kindred spirits that you will be able to better relate to than last time. Then you will be able to practice with others in your area and that is my sincere hope and wish for you as I continue to chant for your Happiness.

Weird: I've been chanting you since you started posting here and more recently I continue to chant for your happiness. You are only seriously compassionate dude and it is an honor to know you my friend. I know that you are "another one of us" this Chanting Growers movement makes chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo! a "Costra Nostra"! I'm sending daimoku your way everyday!

PB: You've been posting just like we asked and I'm very pleased in that regard. Did you read the latest World Tribune, Sensei addresses the Region leaders, but he is really talking to you and me. I'm glad that you clarified in your last post that Daisaku Ikeda is a great teacher and in accordance with the Gohonzon Buddha's (True Buddha's) mandate for all mankind. It is important that you continue to distinguish these things so all newcomers and old timers could embrace the fantastic encouragement and color that our Organization is providing to the world through our concerted efforts, documented actual proof, and faith. Clearly, faith is the foundation of our posts and I salute you for taking the time to write your posts. You have clearly embraced the Spirit of Mentor and Disciple and Nichiren must be smiling in your chanting room from ear to ear! Those words you post are truly wonderous!

What a great post brother Weird! THATS exactly what I'm talking about. The feeling is mutual and our families and friends will ultimately benefit from these amazing strides forward. How can our chanting for others be anything short of WONDERFUL! I am so pleased to know that you are embarking on a journey that I embark on everyday- happiness through compassionate living. Many people in our very towns, cities, and countries need something like what we find within the therapeutic posts on this thread! We keep coming back and putting it all out there for everyone and it isn't easy to progress in the face of adversity, but WE DO!

I'm so elated that tomorrow I'm going to bring my friend Chase to meeting in the morning. I had to get up really early to do a few things today after a long week, but everything is going great and the good times are definitely rolling. I remember not feeling like tomorrow could ever hold anything positive and through the causes we're making on this thread that empower my actions, tomorrow holds treasures and surprises greater than I could ever fathom! I've been telling Babba, Weird and the lot of you that we are really in for an amazing treat before the end of this year!

This is no conjecture or intuition, just fact! Plain and simple straight talk - Let's keep contributing our unique and great lives to this cause for mankind's happiness and prosperity. I think it is good to things to flourish, like the Chanting Growers Movement does. I also think it rocks when we could start chanting with an open heart free from any self imposed limitations because that's when I really run up the mountain and roar like a LION. I've been running around all week and making strides forward like never before in my practice. The most important thing is that we continue to stay connected and function as a unit.

Our unity on this thread is the lifeblood of the Chanting Growers continued growth and propagation. Even in our garden if we neglect to start the cycle again from cuttings or seeds there will be no fruit, but when we make causes to raise our spirits, our children, our friends, our Dependant lifeforms (pets, plants, etc.) in the best possible way -those are truly great effects! How wonderful! How beneficial is it for us to continuing chanting? It is priceless and worth every ounce of effort!

You can just start chanting to make your garden improve, or improve your health (heal yourself, lose weight, gain weight, do what it takes), you can chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to overcome illness, for protection, for safety, and especially for happiness. I chant for all these reasons and so much more!

I believe in lifeblood of this thread and each other's mission is fully support by my daimoku. I'm singing like Luciano Pavorotti over here:

This is the main obstacle many folks have because it takes getting out of your home to go get a Gohonzon. Chanting to the wind is fine, but creating a center and focal point in your life to chant is crucial. THE entire practice hinges on your consistency because you ultimately gauge your performance and know whether you are chanting or not. The more you chant the better it is. I consider many factors and things in life to hinge solely on the amount of daimoku I need to produce in order to pick the desired fruit at the desired ripeness!

I like the analogies that the Gohonzon is like a mirror and the more you chant the more you clean it and the better you look! The reality is that the Gohonzon also symbolizes your life fused with the essence of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism which is the Nam-myoho-renge-kyo! and it is you that you end up honoring in conjunction with the world around you. Everything then possesses a Buddhanature, do you understand that point?

Every animate and inanimate object has a Buddhanature and by activiting our Buddhahood throughout our days we increase the frequency of life rising to these higher worlds. It almost makes me think of the ancient idea that the world is stacked up the back of a turtle. Man do I love green things and the more I embrace the essential and most important aspects of this thread, the easier it becomes for me to feel good about myself and each other.

ha! funny i come home to this topic,something i have been needing to ask a bunch of questions about and keep running up against the server timing me out!!...anyway,home now,i think i will write it out longhand and transcribe...chanted on the plane today during takeoff and landing and wouldnt you know it someone from the place i left understood and asked about it,turns out to be a Buddhist of course! doh!! :)

I might seem to the outward observer that there is a false bravado that is easily conjured up along with a quick and easy pledge to insight and change

might even seem a shallow attempt to fill some neurological or behavioral hole in our being and this, the "flavor" of the week must seem a quick and easy fit

It simply is not so

and I invite everyone who lurks and wonders to take a deeper look at the law of cause and effect that bring together like minds

Understand that marijuana for me, and I can prove this medically, has literally saved my life.

It has taken me 3 decades to understand and surrender to the fact that the synergy between marijuana and me is greater than just me.

It is a relationship that heals us physically, mentally and spiritually.

The fact that is I have spent decades to find this place; were others have been drawn because they to feel so devoted to the relationship they have developed with a plant, a relationship so significant that it grows its own voice and its own calling and has brought them all to like understandings

read the thread from the beginning, look at how the law of cause and effect brings together disparate people from all over the globe beyond any reasonable causal circumstance

the practice of being bodhisatvva through the relationship with marijuana, a common trait among growers is a gift beyond measure, but it is a gift that due to the legality and many other factors including what type of personality is drawn to growing puts us deep into isolation and fear

and thats the hope that this thread, this thing called chanting gives us

a place for the courageous yet vulnerable to gather and cultivate a positivity and community among us to support us morally and spiritually

why should we, people who care enough about the world that we can actually be effected by it, be left to our own devices when it is we, who actually have the compassion and capacity to cultivate and nurture life

you dont have to understand the nuances of Buddhism to get the benefit of collective wisdom compassion and courage

all you need to do is read the thread, hear the testimony and know the words nam myoho renge kyo

it has very much become a place where the positive influence cannabis has on my life can be brought to its fullest potential

"Is it not the meaning of the sutra and commentary that the way to Buddhahood lies within the two elements of reality and wisdom? Reality means the true nature of all phenomena, and wisdom means the illuminating and manifesting of this true nature. Thus when the riverbed of reality is infinitely broad and deep, the water of wisdom will flow ceaselessly. When this reality and wisdom are fused, one attains Buddhahood in one's present form."

This letter is addressed to Soya, a lay follower who lived in Soya Village in Shimosa Province... ...In 1271, Soya became a lay priest and was given the Buddhist name Horen Nichirai by the Daishonin. Horen built two temples and lived at one of them until he died in 1291 at the age of sixty eight.

In this letter, the Daishonin first quotes the “Expedient Means” chapter of the Lotus Sutra and states, “The way to Buddhahood lies within the two elements of reality and wisdom.” Reality indicates the ultimate truth that the Law permeates all phenomena in the universe. Wisdom, on the other hand, means the ability to perceive and understand this truth. When this wisdom exists — when the “water of wisdom” fills the “riverbed of reality”— it is known as the fusion of reality and wisdom. This is enlightenment. In other words, one illuminates and manifests the Law in one’s own life.

The Daishonin stresses that Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the Law that unites both reality and wisdom; it is the seed of Buddhahood for all people in the Latter Day. This Law is to be propagated by Bodhisattva Superior Practices at the beginning of the Latter Day. The Daishonin states that he is the first one to embark on this great mission, by which he is really indicating that he is the original teacher who will lead all people to enlightenment. Next, he points out that any teacher or disciple who ignores those who commit slander of the Law will fall into hell. This amounts to a compassionate warning about the responsibility believers have to protect the Buddha’s teaching.

My understanding of the passage:

This passage clearly states what is the purpose of our Bodhisattva practices are for. It is none other than to be able to perceive and manifest the wisdom through the reality of our lives that we possess the Buddha's life in our present form and this reality can only be manifested through faith in the Gohonzon of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. All other virtues and aspects in our lives is driven from such conviction to benefit our life including our present circumstances.

To realize this and lead others to such realization through faith in the Gohonzon of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, means to follow in the footsteps of Nichiren, the Buddha of the Latter day of the Law who brought us the "Water" of wisdom to "Quench" our desire to attain perfect enlightenment in our present form. If we see that someone leads us and others to the wrong direction and we fail to reproach him for his mistakes and direction, we not only allow him to fall by the wayside, but also we betray the Buddha's warnings and allow ourselves to be lead astray as well.

One should carefully examine which teacher(s) or priest(s) now a days lead(s) us away and astray from the Gogonzon of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo in comparing what Nichiren is teaching us in his writings. This will determine whether we attain Buddhahood in this lifetime or not. As Nichiren states in this letter: "If you confuse the general with the specific even in the slightest,3 you will never be able to attain Buddhahood and will wander in suffering through endless transmigration of births and deaths.

It is through the conviction of a good teacher and a priest like Nichiren of HIS OWN faith in the Gohonzon and Nam-myoho-renge kyo that one is correctly leads his followers to manifest this "reality" and "wisdom" which is infinitely profound and immeasurable.

THE “Expedient Means” chapter in volume one of the Lotus Sutra states, “The wisdom of the Buddhas is infinitely profound and immeasurable.” A commentary says that the riverbed of reality is described as “infinitely profound” because it is boundless, and that the water of wisdom is described as “immeasurable” because it is hard to fathom.1
Is not the meaning of the sutra and the commentary that the way to Buddhahood lies within the two elements of reality and wisdom? Reality means the true nature of all phenomena, and wisdom means the illuminating and manifesting of this true nature. Thus when the riverbed of reality is infinitely broad and deep, the water of wisdom will flow ceaselessly. When this reality and wisdom are fused, one attains Buddhahood in one’s present form.

The sutras expounded prior to the Lotus Sutra cannot lead to Buddhahood because they are provisional and expedient teachings that separate reality and wisdom. The Lotus Sutra, however, unites the two as a single entity. The sutra says that the Buddhas open the door of Buddha wisdom to all living beings, show it, cause them to awaken to it, and induce them to enter its path. By realizing this Buddha wisdom, one attains Buddhahood.2


This inner enlightenment of the Buddha is far beyond the understanding of voice-hearers and pratyekabuddhas. This is why the “Expedient Means” chapter goes on to say, “Not one of the voice-hearers or pratyekabuddhas is able to comprehend it.” What then are these two elements of reality and wisdom? They are simply the five characters of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. Shakyamuni Buddha called forth the Bodhisattvas of the Earth and entrusted to them these five characters that constitute the essence of the sutra. This is the teaching that was transferred to the bodhisattvas who had been the disciples of the Buddha since the remote past.

The Lotus Sutra states that Bodhisattva Superior Practices and the others will appear in the first five hundred years of the Latter Day of the Law to propagate the five characters, the embodiment of the two elements of reality and wisdom. The sutra makes this perfectly clear. Who could possibly dispute it? I, Nichiren, am neither Bodhisattva Superior Practices nor his envoy, but I precede them, spreading the five characters to prepare the way. Bodhisattva Superior Practices received the water of the wisdom of the Mystic Law from the Thus Come One Shakyamuni and causes it to flow into the wasteland of the people’s lives in the evil world of the latter age. This is the function of wisdom.

Shakyamuni Buddha transferred this teaching to Bodhisattva Superior Practices, and now Nichiren propagates it in Japan. With regard to the transfer of teachings, it is divided into two categories: general and specific. If you confuse the general with the specific even in the slightest,3 you will never be able to attain Buddhahood and will wander in suffering through endless transmigrations of births and deaths.



For example, the voice-hearers in Shakyamuni Buddha’s lifetime received the seeds of Buddhahood from Shakyamuni in the distant past when he was the sixteenth son of the Buddha Great Universal Wisdom Excellence. Therefore, they could not attain enlightenment by following Amida, Medicine Master, or any other Buddha. To illustrate, if a family member brings home water from the ocean, the entire family can use it. But were they to refuse even a single drop of that water and instead go looking for water from some other ocean, it would be terribly misguided and foolish. In the same way, to forget the original teacher who had brought one the water of wisdom from the great ocean of the Lotus Sutra and instead follow another would surely cause one to sink into the endless sufferings of birth and death.

One should abandon even one’s teacher if he or she is misguided, though there will be cases where this is not necessary. One should decide according to the principles both of the world and of Buddhism. Priests in the Latter Day of the Law are ignorant of the principles of Buddhism and are conceited, so they despise the correct teacher and fawn on patrons. True priests are those who are honest and who desire little and yet know satisfaction. Volume one of The Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sutra states: “Those who have yet to attain the truth should humble themselves before the highest principle, which is comparable to heaven, and feel abashed before all the sages. Then they will be monks with a sense of shame. When they manifest insight and wisdom, then they will be true monks.”


The Nirvana Sutra states: “If even a good monk sees someone destroying the teaching and disregards him, failing to reproach him, to oust him, or to punish him for his offense, then you should realize that that monk is betraying the Buddha’s teaching. But if he ousts the destroyer of the Law, reproaches him, or punishes him, then he is my disciple and a true voice-hearer.” You should etch deeply in your mind the two words “see” and “disregard” in the phrase “sees someone destroying the teaching and disregards him, failing to reproach him.” Both teacher and followers will surely fall into the hell of incessant suffering if they see enemies of the Lotus Sutra but disregard them and fail to reproach them. The Great Teacher Nan-yüeh says that they “will fall into hell along with those evil persons.”4

To hope to attain Buddhahood without speaking out against slander is as futile as trying to find water in the midst of fire or fire in the midst of water. No matter how sincerely one believes in the Lotus Sutra, if one is guilty of failing to rebuke slander of the Law, one will surely fall into hell, just as a single crab leg will ruin a thousand pots of lacquer. This is the meaning of the passage in the sutra, “Because the poison has penetrated deeply and their minds no longer function as before.”5

The sutra states, “Those persons who had heard the Law dwelled here and there in various Buddha lands, constantly reborn in company with their teachers,”6 and “If one stays close to the teachers of the Law, one will speedily gain the bodhisattva way.

By following and learning from these teachers one will see Buddhas as numerous as Ganges sands.”7 A commentary says, “Originally one followed this Buddha and for the first time conceived the desire to seek the way. And by following this Buddha again, one will reach the stage where there is no retrogression.”8 Another commentary says, “In the beginning one followed this Buddha or bodhisattva and formed a bond with him, and so it will be through this Buddha or bodhisattva that one will attain one’s goal.”9 Above all, be sure to follow your original teacher so that you are able to attain Buddhahood.

Shakyamuni Buddha is the original teacher for all people, and moreover, he is endowed with the virtues of sovereign and parent. Because I have expounded this teaching, I have been exiled and almost killed. As the saying goes, “Good advice grates on the ear.” But still I am not discouraged. The Lotus Sutra is like the seed, the Buddha like the sower, and the people like the field. If you deviate from these principles, not even I can save you in your next life.

Weird, I'm totally convinced that your last post should be in the running for post of the year. That was such a great post and when you said: "all you need to do is read the thread, hear the testimony and know the words nam myoho renge kyo" it was music to my eyes and ears. Repeating your post is like saying what I have in my heart. That is truly marvelous! A big hug to you my brother for laying out all that positive energy for everyone.

I really wanted to thank and encourage pb4ugo because the resulting writings and teachings add a very necessary dimension to nam myoho renge kyo on a daily basis

it is as if those writings were tailored for my particular time and place space, and although I know they weren't written with the intention the resulting cause and effect is none the less amazing

Thank you all for contributing to an incredible link to Nichiren's Buddhism and the effect on one's life. Easy, Babba, Pb, Trichy, Weird, unclefish and others, your posts really give me more reinforcement in fighting the negative forces that inhibit those seeking the way of enlightenment thru chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. Mugi Washinn!

I have told you of my daughter's experience with her loving pet, Lola, and how chanting and making a significant change solidified her practice a while back. Now my oldest daughter has also experienced a great mystical change thru a consistent change in her daily practice of chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. I hope to share later when I have time.

My gratitude and appreciation for those of your courageously practicing this Buddhism in your particular circumstances and sharing your insights and enlightenment. Thank you very much!

Good Morning Everyone

As a new day dawns it is important for me to remember that if I want to evoke the buddha nature in myself and others that I must contribute to evoking the bodhisatvva nature in others (and of course myself).

And while this concept seems a simple root of Buddhism and I may awaken daily to the same notions and desires, I remind myself that these thoughts must leave my mind to become manifest, so this morning I renew the commitment to myself and those around me that I may effect by chanting

this ritual is more than an exercise of remembering, which in its simplicity and repetition may easily become mundane to many, but it is a simple way to renew a daily commitment to a practice that allows us to apply faith, courage and wisdom to live within a dynamic unfolding truth

If the simple chant is the seed of nichiren's doctrine then is the gohonzon not the tree?

if this is so they why cannot the devotion of a simple chant continue to give us a renewed daily outlook for a changing new day?

YES YES YES! Weird, you are right! The Gohonzon is the "tree" and your practice is the "roots". The deeper the roots, the more fruit your strong tree will bear. I support you in your endeavors and it seems to me that you are already supporting me with your amazing encouragement and guidance.

When a Bodhisattva emerges from the earth they emerge singing and dancing. Your joyful words are really clear to me and make complete sense in every regard. It takes some concentrated effort to first read the thread, then to understand its implications upon each of our unique lives and finally how can we apply what we learn in our own individual way is how I continue to approach this practice.

The more I sing Nam-myoho-renge-kyo in the mornings the sweeter my life is becoming. Some people like sour things in a good way, but chanting for me is the right amount of sweetness I need to persevere! I don't put sugar in my coffee and I need some meds before I drink my cup of joe, I hope you have a great day as I get ready for mine!

UNITED WE STAND! We will be ever victorious again today and echoing Socal - I love the Chanting Growers! The Chanting Growers ROCK!

"All those who keep faith in the Lotus Sutra are most certainly Buddhas, and one who slanders a Buddha commits a grave offense. When one chants the daimoku bearing in mind that there are no distinctions among those who embrace the Lotus Sutra, then the blessings one gains will be equal to those of Shakyamuni Buddha."

Written near the end of 1276, this letter was a reply to the lay priest Matsuno Rokuro Saemon. Four in his family received letters from Nichiren Daishonin — he, his wife, son, and daughter-in-law. One of his daughters married Nanjo Hyoe Shichiro and gave birth to Nanjo Tokimitsu, a staunch supporter of the Daishonin and his disciple Nikko Shonin. It is thought that Matsuno was converted to the Daishonin’s teachings through this connection with the Nanjo family.

This letter explains the fourteen slanders, citing Miao-lo’s Annotations on “The Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sutra.” These slanders are referred to originally in the “Simile and Parable” chapter of the Lotus Sutra. Asked if there is a difference in benefits derived when a sage chants the daimoku and when an ordinary person chants it, the Daishonin answers in the negative. “However, there is a difference,” he continues, “if one chants the daimoku while acting against the intent of this sutra.” He explains “the intent” of the sutra by referring to the fourteen slanders.

The first ten of the fourteen slanders concern one’s attitude and action toward the Law, that is, the Buddha’s teachings; the last four concern those toward people who believe in and practice that Law.

Emphasizing the importance of unity among believers, the Daishonin says, “Always remember that believers in the Lotus Sutra should absolutely be the last to abuse one another.” The reason he gives is that “all those who keep faith in the Lotus Sutra are most certainly Buddhas, and one who slanders a Buddha commits a grave offense.” In other words, he warns against the last four of the fourteen slanders: “despising, hating, envying, and bearing grudges against” fellow believers.



My understanding of the passage:

This Passage is Nichiren's answer to a question which deals with the core attitude we to uphold when practicing the true teaching. It is clear as the sun in the sky that our practice is the driving force for our attainment of enlightenment for embracing the Gohonzon of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo being the core and the essence of the Lotus Sutra that promises to enjoy peace and security in our present existence and good circumstances in future existences. The fundamental question we should ask ourselves at any given time is: Do we practice this great teaching with the true intent of the Lotus Sutra which summarized in these warnings of the 14 slanders to be ware of? or do we destroy the intent of the Lotus Sutra by ignoring these 14 Slanders?

It is clear in the following sentence where Nichiren quotes from the Lotus Sutra that: "If anyone sees a person who accepts and upholds this sutra and tries to expose the faults or evils of that person, whether what he speaks is true or not, he will in his present existence be afflicted with white leprosy" The meaning of this passage is to be understood that when one who practices the correct teaching and destroys the intent of the Lotus Sutra repeatedly, one becomes afflicted with a disease just like leprosy - one does not notices the "infection" in its early stages. However, when time passes, the disease slowly spreads throughout the body to a point of irreversible severity that becomes too late to be cured. This means that the slander that one commits against those who practices, be they PRIESTS or LAY BELIEVERS while practicing Nichiren's teachings, becomes impossible to erase and one falls eventually to the evil path and destroy his or her own seed of enlightenment and as consequences, sinks to the depth of hell in the end of one life's journy.

Let us take a notice of these 14 warnings very careful and be ware of our conduct at all times.

I have continued to recite the ten factors of life4 and the verse section of the ‘Life Span’ chapter and chant the daimoku without the slightest neglect. But how great is the difference between the blessings received when a sage chants the daimoku and the blessings received when we chant it?” To reply, one is in no way superior to the other. The gold that a fool possesses is no different from the gold that a wise man possesses; a fire made by a fool is the same as a fire made by a wise man.

However, there is a difference if one chants the daimoku while acting against the intent of this sutra. There are various stages in the practice of this sutra [and various forms of slander exist accordingly]. Let me sum them up by quoting from volume five of The Annotations on “The Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sutra”: “In defining the types of evil, The Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sutra states briefly, ‘Expound among the wise but not among the foolish.’5 One scholar6 enumerates the types of evil as follows: ‘I will first list the evil causes and then their effects.

There are fourteen evil causes: (1) arrogance, (2) negligence, (3) wrong views of the self, (4) shallow understanding, (5) attachment to earthly desires, (6) not understanding, (7) not believing, (8) scowling with knitted brows, (9) harboring doubts, (10) slandering, (11) despising, (12) hating, (13) envying, and (14) bearing grudges.’ ” Since these fourteen slanders apply equally to priesthood and laity, you must be on guard against them.

Bodhisattva Never Disparaging of old said that all people have the Buddha nature and that, if they embrace the Lotus Sutra, they will never fail to attain Buddhahood. He further stated that to slight a person is to slight the Buddha himself. Thus, his practice was to revere all people. He revered even those who did not embrace the Lotus Sutra because they too had the Buddha nature and might someday believe in the sutra. Therefore, it is all the more natural to revere those priests and lay people who do embrace the sutra.


The fourth volume of the Lotus Sutra states, “If there were a person who spoke only one word to curse the lay persons or monks or nuns who uphold and preach the Lotus Sutra, then his offense would be even graver than that of cursing Shakyamuni Buddha to his face for the space of a kalpa.”7 The Lotus Sutra also states, “[If anyone sees a person who accepts and upholds this sutra and tries to expose the faults or evils of that person], whether what he speaks is true or not, [he will in his present existence be afflicted with white leprosy].”8 Take these teachings to heart, and always remember that believers in the Lotus Sutra should absolutely be the last to abuse one another.

A commentary states, “Both the beings and the environment of the Avichi hell exist entirely within the life of the highest sage [Buddha], and what is more, the life and the environment of Vairochana [Buddha] never transcend the lives of common mortals.”9 You can surmise the significance of the fourteen slanders in the light of the above quotations.

That you have asked me about Buddhism shows that you are sincerely concerned about your next life. The Lotus Sutra states, “ . . . a person capable of listening to this Law, such a person is likewise rare.”10 Unless the Buddha’s true envoy appears in this world, who is there that can expound this sutra in exact accord with the Buddha’s intent? Moreover, it would appear that there are very few who ask about the meaning of the sutra in an effort to resolve their doubts and thus believe in it wholeheartedly. No matter how humble a person may be, if his wisdom is the least bit greater than yours, you should ask him about the meaning of the sutra.

But the people in this evil age are so arrogant, prejudiced, and attached to fame and profit that they are afraid that, should they become the disciple of a humble person or try to learn something from him, they will be looked down upon by others. They never rid themselves of this wrong attitude, so they seem to be destined for the evil paths.

The “Teacher of the Law” chapter says: “If you make offerings to the priest who preaches the Lotus Sutra and hear its teachings for even a moment, then you will experience joy because you can gain even greater benefits than one who offers immeasurable treasures to the Buddha for the space of eighty million kalpas....”11

"I cannot adequately express my gratitude for your frequent letters. At the time of my persecution on the twelfth, not only did you accompany me to Tatsunokuchi, but also you declared that you would die by my side. This can only be called wondrous."

Nichiren Daishonin wrote this letter to his loyal samurai follower Shijo Kingo in 1271, in the ninth month, on the twenty-first day, only nine days after the Tatsunokuchi Persecution. The Daishonin had been sentenced to exile on Sado Island under the supervision of Hojo Nobutoki, the constable of Sado. Originally it was intended that the Daishonin be escorted to Echi, to the residence of Homma Shigetsura, Hojo Nobutoki’s deputy; from here he was to be taken directly to Sado. But Hei no Saemon, a high government official and avowed enemy of the Daishonin, arbitrarily decided to have the Daishonin executed as he was being escorted to Homma’s residence. An attempt was made to behead the Daishonin at Tatsunokuchi, but it was unsuccessful. The Daishonin’s exile was later carried out as it had been originally planned.

The Daishonin here reveals something about his true identity, which he later describes in greater detail in The Opening of the Eyes, also given to Shijo Kingo. Here he states, “Tatsunokuchi in Sagami Province is the place where Nichiren gave his life. Because he died there for the Lotus Sutra, how could it be anything less than the Buddha land?” Why is it that the Daishonin states, “he died,” when in fact he survived the attempted execution? The Opening of the Eyes explains this when it says, “On the twelfth day of the ninth month of last year, between the hours of the rat and the ox (11:00 P.M. to 3:00 A.M.), this person named Nichiren was beheaded. It is his soul that has come to this island of Sado” (p. 269). The Daishonin is implying that, though the ordinary person called Nichiren died at Tatsunokuchi, Nichiren, the Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law, reached Sado Island safely in order to fulfill his mission.



My understanding of the passage:

In this passage Nichiren conveys how Shijo Kingo was willing to die next to Nichiren if he was to be executed on the twelve of September, nine days prior to writing this letter. Calling Shijo's willingness to die "wondrous".
In another letter Nichiren stated: "Therefore, those who become Nichiren’s disciples and lay believers should realize the profound karmic relationship they share with him and spread the Lotus Sutra as he does."

Nichiren states that our connection to Nichiren is not by accident but rather an eternal karmic relationship that prevails through past present and future.

In another letter Nichiren quote from the Sutra: "The sutra’s statement, “Those persons who had heard the Law dwelled here and there in various Buddha lands, constantly reborn in company with their teachers, cannot be false in any way.”

Since life is eternal, one by embracing the Gohonzon of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo today, can realize right in front of one's eyes that one becomes the Thus Come One equal to Shakyamuni and to all the Buddha's in the ten directions from past present and future.

In another letter Nichiren stated: "The “Devadatta” chapter of the Lotus Sutra states that Devadatta was the teacher of the Thus Come One Shakyamuni in some past existence. "He who was once the teacher is now the disciple, and he who is now the disciple was formerly the teacher."

These profound statements are not arbitrarily uttered by Nichiren but reveal the truth of the Lotus Sutra about our eternal relationship whether we comprehend them or not.

I CANNOT adequately express my gratitude for your frequent letters. At the time of my persecution on the twelfth, not only did you accompany me to Tatsunokuchi,1 but also you declared that you would die by my side. This can only be called wondrous.

How many are the places where I have thrown away my life in past existences for the sake of my wife and children, lands and followers! I have given up my life on the mountains and the seas, on the rivers, on the seashore, and by the roadside. Never once, however, did I die for the Lotus Sutra or suffer persecution for the daimoku. Hence none of the ends I met enabled me to attain Buddhahood. Because I did not attain Buddhahood, the seas and rivers where I threw away my life are not Buddha lands.

In this life, however, as the votary of the Lotus Sutra, I was exiled and put to death—exiled to Ito and beheaded at Tatsunokuchi. Tatsunokuchi in Sagami Province is the place where Nichiren gave his life. Because he died there for the Lotus Sutra, how could it be anything less than the Buddha land? The sutra reads, “In the Buddha lands of the ten directions there is only the Law of the one vehicle.”2 Does this not bear out my assertion? The “Law of the one vehicle” is the Lotus Sutra. No true teaching other than the Lotus Sutra exists in any of the Buddha lands of the ten directions. The sutra continues, “There are not two, there are not three, except when the Buddha preaches so as an expedient means.”3 This being so, then every place where Nichiren meets persecution is the Buddha land.

Of all the places in the saha world, it is at Tatsunokuchi in Katase of Sagami Province in Japan that Nichiren’s life dwells. Because he gave his life there for the sake of the Lotus Sutra, Tatsunokuchi deserves to be called the Land of Tranquil Light. This is what the “Supernatural Powers” chapter means when it states, “Whether in a garden, a forest . . . or in mountain valleys or the wide wilderness . . . in such places have the Buddhas entered nirvana.”

You accompanied Nichiren, vowing to give your life as a votary of the Lotus Sutra. Your deed is a hundred, thousand, ten thousand times greater than that of Hung Yen,4 who cut open his stomach and inserted the liver of his dead lord, Duke Yi [to save him from shame and dishonor]. When I reach Eagle Peak, I will first tell how Shijo Kingo, like myself, resolved to die for the Lotus Sutra.

I have heard unofficially that by the order of the lord of Kamakura5 I am to be exiled to Sado Province. Among the three heavenly sons of light, the god of the moon saved my life at Tatsunokuchi by appearing as a shining object, and the god of the stars descended four or five days ago to greet me.6 Now only the god of the sun remains, and he is certain to protect me. How reassuring! How encouraging! The “Teacher of the Law” chapter states, “I will dispatch persons magically conjured who will act to guard and protect them.” This passage leaves no room for doubt. The “Peaceful Practices” chapter reads, “Swords and staves will not touch him.”

The “Universal Gateway” chapter states, “The executioner’s sword will be broken to bits!” There is nothing false in these sutra passages. The strong and steadfast power of faith is precious indeed.
