What's new

Hello to the Japanese sub-forum

Hello, haro, and konnichi wa.

I am a 9 year resident of Japan currently doing my first grow. It's outdoor. I live in the countryside, chugoku, sea of Japan side.

My grow is going ok, I guess. It turned out to be a lot harder than I thought it was gonna be. I made a lot of mistakes in the beginning, plants died, ordered more seeds, and then repeated that sequence once more before I got a handle on things. Therefore most of my plants are pretty small. I've got one nice 6 footer though that is just starting to flower, Purple White Widow. :)

I'll get some pics up and more info on exactly what I've got going soon.

Excuse me for saying, but things seem a little slow around here. How many gaijin growers we got here? Any Japanese? (I think I spotted a nihonjin in the Japanese language thread, but I can't remember)

Anyways, nice to meet you all.

Here's a few pics. I'm so bummed and stressing right now. Some of my Jack Herers, which were just starting to bud out nicely, have what I'm almost certain is bud rot.

Here I was a week ago, happy.

Now, today, the same plant. Kinda hard to see. I'm not sure if this camera even has macro or not. Have to ask my wife to sort it out for me.

Damn, outdoor growing is really turning out to be hard. Marijuana is supposed to be a tough, hardy plant, but it's seeming pretty fragile to me.

There are 6 short Jack Herer in that spot. One for sure is a goner, I think. I'm hoping the others can be saved with some surgical intervention.

Anyways, I've got 3 grow spots. Those 6 Jack Herer, which are small. I've got 4 Neville's Haze in another spot, small. They haven't started flowering yet. And, in my biggest grow spot (on an island in the nearby river), I've got 1 Jack Herer, 3 Neville's Haze, 3 Super Haze, and 1 Purple White Widow. Everything is small, 2 - 3 1/2 feet tall or so, except for the PWW, which looked to be better than 6 feet when I went to feed/water 2 days ago.

I'm just hoping to get enough smoke to last me until next year's harvest and be able to give some away to a couple close friends. I used to smoke very regularly, but usually small amounts before I came to Japan. I bet I haven't smoked a whole ounce in the 9 years I've been here. Expensive and hard to find. I finally woke up and decided to grow it myself.

Big learning curve. I've made a lot of mistakes and learned a lot. Next year will be a lot better. Hopefully, I get enough this fall to feel some small measure of success.

Hiya Hank. Welcome to the forum.

I grow outside in Japan and have found you need to have good air circulation around the plants. It is so humid here that you can easily get bud rot if the plants are crowded or smothered with weeds or other plants. Try opening the area up around your plants so the wind can blow freely through them.

Your other plants look good. The PWW looks nice and big and should give you lots of bud. Depending on where you live you are probably safe to harvest into December. Careful in typhoon season!

Thanks MM, yeah, someone mentioned airflow to me on another forum as well, and yup, these guys are surrounded by tall weeds way in the back of an unused field. They are nice and hidden for security reasons, but .... I hadn't considered air flow at all.

It's hard to find just the right place to grow. Secluded enough to work in, good sunlight, water nearby is a big plus, good soil and/or a place where amendments could be easiy brought in, and now good air flow, also.

There will be plenty of time to scout around in the off-season. I want to grow some trees next year.

Hi Hank, great to see an outdoor grower in Nippon. I second what MM said about air circulation and mold, I found bud rot to be a bit of an issue. Unfortunately I'm not growing atm (actually not in Japan atm) or I'd be posting more. Be careful ordering seeds, the police turned up with a warrant to search my house and car last year because I had ordered seeds from a Japanese online dealer. Luckily I got away with my grow but it could have been very bad.

Thanks for the advice. I've ordered seeds 4 times this year, but never from a Japanese site. Why would you order from a Japanese site at all is what I'm wondering. Unless you are Japanese, an English language site is much easier to read and, I would assume, cheaper.

You're right, ordering from an overseas site is cheaper and probably easier, but there is an advantage ordering from a domestic dealer; you can't be busted for importing seeds into the country without a licence. You get around this if you buy seeds that are already in Japan. It's too easily traceable when the police go after the customer records though.

i believe that if you buy from a serious company that you already tried and know they send everything nice and stealth there shouldn't be any problems of course delivering to a safe address no where you grow.
Also i would like to know if people have been caught for buying a couple packs or they where trying to import big quantities to commercialize as is this is not clear to me. and would make a big difference.

Also i want to say thx Saibai for the advice hope everything is doing great with u and see some of your grows soon.

Spent a couple of hours going to two different sites, hiking through woods with water, watering with nutes, checking plants, etc... As soon as I got back home it started pouring rain. Ha ha.

 :moon:  :moon:

The JH was looking pretty good, I thought. I cut out the bad buds last week and sprayed some bug/disease killer on them and cut the weeds around them way back to increase air-flow. There is no new mold issues and they look healthy and happy.

Little update.

Little update.

Another shot of the PWW. Sorry, all my shots look the same. This beauty just started to flower. It smells really skunky. I have high hopes for this one.

PWW-2.jpg

Jack Herer about 3 weeks into flower. Looks genki.

I went out to the place where I was having some mold, or whatever it is, issues and excised some more buds today, but only 2 of the 6 plants have the problem and it isn't spreading at all, so that's good news.

Also, it seems the Neville's Haze is starting to flower. I wonder how they are going to turn out. I can maybe let them go for 12 weeks or so from now.

Grow Update. Lots of pics.

Grow Update. Lots of pics.

Hello, it's been a while since I updated. (Cut and pasted from another forum.) Hope you all enjoy.

Well, it's been two weeks and that actually seems like a good interval. The plants can change a bit more noticably. All my late starters are getting going on their flower production and I had quite a nice visit with all my plants yesterday.

First off, I haven't shown this one. The very last things to go out were some bonus seeds I got from my last order. I threw 4 into some big pots and put them out in the bushes by an old road. Two died right away. Two kept going, but one of those died for some reason recently as well. This is my last mystery plant. I wonder what it is?

Bonus1-1.jpg

And the top. Looks very sativa dominant.

Bonus2-1.jpg

This one I planted a couple years ago. He's a male, but I decided to let him live.

Jin.jpg

So, first to the one site with two plots in the back of an unused field. My 3 Neville's Haze in this locale are particularly scrawny, but have gotten a growth spurt since they started flowering about 10 days a go.

Neville's Haze:

NH1.jpg

The other site has 6 Jack Herer and lots of moldy buds. I think last time I posted it seemed to be getting better, but then a later trip had lots of dying/browning flowers. I cut a bunch out, a fairly large percent of the total - maybe 30 - 40 percent by this point. The pic of all of them together is too sad to show, but here is my biggest one, which has resisted the mold up til now.

Notice the brown bud in the middle. Ouch.

JH1-1.jpg

On to my river spot which had some deaths by flooding, but after that all the plants down there are doing better then the ones in the old field. I may use it again next year.

Here's a Neville's Haze from the river spot. There are 3 of them. All the NH are doing better down in the river. I'm thinking more sun and better air circulation are the major factors at work here, maybe a higher water table also. The Neville's Haze are really sativa dominant I read and they go very late into the season. I may be just on the edge of the suitable growing region, or my latitude might be a bit high. We'll see.

NH2.jpg

Here's a Super Haze from Ch. 9. There are 3 here and they aren't super robust or anything, but they'll finish out and we'll see what they taste like, for sure.

SH1.jpg

Super Haze cola starting to fill in a bit there.

SH2.jpg

And my pride and joy, Purple White Widow. She's really getting flunky and flirty. I like a big girl and me and her are gonna get real familiar.

PWW2.jpg

And another. I couldn't choose.

PWW1.jpg

And the top. Still a bit thin, but she's only been flowering for about 3 weeks now.

PWW3.jpg

Here's a few shots of some flowers that were out at my river site on Monday. It's called higanbana. It flowers twice a year around the time of the spring and autumn equinoxes. It's a nice reminder of the natural cycle. Very abundant and pretty.

Oops, mind the focus.
