Tutorial Organics for Beginners

I've been using compost and compost teas to provide for my plants with great success. But, right now I need something so simple my wife can take care of them if need be. It will be small cuttings going directly into flower. I would like for her to only have to water maybe with blackstrap molasses at most. So what should I mix up, needs to have available nutes immediatley, 70-80 day flower, so I guess about 60 days worth of ferts. What do you recommend?

Base Mix

LC's Soiless Mix #2:
6 parts Pro Mix BX or HP / Sunshine Mix (any flavor from #1 up) / Fox Farm Ocean Forest or Light Warrior
2 parts perlite
2 parts earthworm castings
Powdered (NOT PELLETIZED) dolomite lime @ 2 tablespoons per gallon or 1 cup per cubic foot of the soiless mix.
If you use a 3 qt. saucepan as “parts” in the amounts given above, it equals about 1 cu. ft. of soiless mix and you can just dump in a cup of powdered dolomite lime.
But, a "part" can be anything from a tablespoon to a five gallon bucket. Just use the same item for all of the "parts".

Nutrient mix

1 tablespoon blood meal per gallon or 1/2 cup per cubic foot of soil mix
2 tablespoons bone meal per gallon or 1 cup per cubic foot of soil mix
1-tablespoon kelp meal per gallon or 1/2 cup per cubic foot of soil mix

or

Use all these items combined with one gallon of soil mix.
1/3C hi N Guano (Mexican Bat Guano)
1/2C hi P Guano (Jamaican or Indonesian Bat Guano)
1TBS Kelp Meal
(OPTIONAL) 1TBS Jersey Greensand

Mineral Mix

per gallon add.......

1 TBS Azomite
1 TBS Rock powder and or Glacial rock dst

make sure she has 1 gallon of soil per month of growth.

Just add water.

Yea - I can second V's suggestion. I am in the exact same situation where I need to be gone for a few months and I needed something simple that my GF could or would handle. Although I have shown her how to make ewc tea and she does, in a pinch, she just puts water.

Using LC#2 with the dry nute mix.

I have to ask about this guano mix, I've been tempted to try it ever since the first time I read this thread (long time ago) but I've been worried about the rates. It seems like a lot per gallon, but it's obviously been tried and tested. My concern is I use MSM as my base, Fox Farm is cheaper here than mixing your own 6-2-2. There's already some bat guano and other amendments, but there's no way of knowing how much. So I'm worried I'll burn the girls by using the above rates. I also don't want to reduce them too much and have constant deficiencies throughout.

I've also been wondering how many cups to a pound/kilo to figure out what size I'd order?

Also, I've seen a lot of people in Europe use rock dusts, but I can't find them here, and I hear they're not available due to some legalities? What micro nutrients are in these rock dusts? How can I replace it? Do the kelp and the azomite not provide enough micronutrients?

I do not know MSM.

You will not burn well rooted clones.

1 5 lb box of each will last almost a year or more.

1 cup = 16 Tablespoons
2.2 pounds = 35.2 oz, 4.21 cups, 67.49 Tablespoons, 202 Teaspoons

They are every where. Search garden stores and the Home Depot version in your area.

azomite is a mined mineral and the name of mine in Germany is Steinmehl.

Do some research brother. READ!!!!! Read the labels at the garden store.

I could give you a ton of other things but I gave you the easiest to find and the best to use. You can build later as you learn.

Do the kelp and the azomite not provide enough micronutrients?

The Azomite supplies Free Silica. Look that one up on Google.

Just out of curiousity, what are the reasons you chose the dry mix over the guano mix?

They are both dry mixes.......they do not come liquid so they are dry. Simple.

And no I am not being sarcastic.

Now...........tell me in great detail what you have......what you have mixed and then I can tell you exactly what t do with it and what exactly to add.

Fair enough?

V

BTW Thanks for all the help in this thread Grapeman........you can a long way from arguing with CTguy and MM in the Hydro forum......Good job Brother

I personally am not a hugh fan of manures, even though I have used them extensively my entire farming life. I am on my 5th run of this mix. This last time I recycled my soil, I did add some high P guano along with a bit of refresher for some of the dry products. And just to be safe, I mix 2/3's of my old recycled mix to 1/3 new mix every time. Probably not necessary.

I follow V's advice pretty much to a T. When I add something new to the mix, I do it one product at a time, and in conservative portions.

Good luck. You will be happy if you mix and follow the directions. I suggest you start with the basic recipe and build over time. It's a no brainer.

:) if I were a settler in the 1800's, I'd be from the "show me" state.

That is funny GM, I am from the ´Show Me State` LOL born and raised in the Northwest part of the state.

That is where my training as a grower began....... a long time ago.

Vonforme, I am curious as to why you suggest LC base mix #2. Would #1 work just as well? Or, is there a reason why you suggest #2? The reason I am asking is because, Promix/FF/Sunshine mix are very expensive where I am, and require a trip the hydro store. Whereas I can get all ingredients for LC base mix #1 much easier and cheaper. With that said, If you feel using mix #2 is important, I will make the trip and spend the money, but don't want to waste money.

So I am thinking of using Mix #1 (unless you tell me otherwise, I want what is best for my plants), Nute mix #1 Bone Meal, Blood Meal, and Kelp Meal.

As for the Azomite, I can't afford a 45lb bag right now, just to use a cup or two, and can't find anything smaller.

I am having trouble locating the rock dust(are you refering to rock phosphate?) and/or glacial rock dust. Can you recommend some brand names, I may need to order off the internet.

One more thing, You said use pots of 1 gal per month of growth. Plants will flower from 60-77 days. If I use 2gal pots, I will not be able to fit 4 per square foot. I figured 1gal would be plenty for budsicles. There will be 0 veg. What do you think about this?

Thank you guys very much for your help.

dextr0, it says on the website:

For potted plants blend a tablespoon into each gallon of soil

Perhaps you start with that and see where it leads?

yea i saw that but i already have my plants potted...tried to use it in ACT but idk how that did...just seeing what others would do with it. I really dont know how to use it and am afraind to mix it in my next grows soil cause im afraid of nut lock up which i always seem to get.

I think the talk of rock dust and Azomite may be a bit premature for a first time mix. It was for me anyway. I didn't start adding these types of products until my second or third grow with LC#2 & nute #1. These soil improvements are subtle and not mandatory whatsoever for a successful first grow. IMO.

Keep it simple.

Thanks for the links, I guess I can afford it.

What about this question?

As soon as I can get this answered, I'll be making my mix, and cutting clones the same day.

Nevermind, I went ahead and bought the Promix HP. Soil is cooking. Thanks for the help. Now I need to get off my lazy ass and take some cuttings.

One bale of promix, one quart of liquid karma, and a small bottle of maxicrop powdered kelp = $97. Good thing I already had the perlite, bone meal, blood meal, worm castings, and lime. Plus I still have 5 cubic feet of promix left, should last a few runs.
