Audiophile, it's obvious you've never worked on any kind of pro audio if you haven't heard of external drives.

Don't tell me.

You've got a ProTools in mommy's basement and you're making beats.

I'm in awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.......

huh... that's interesting.
Your computer processing happens on an external hard drive? Is that what you're telling me? And that is also what your operating system runs on? That must be how the real pros do it right?
I think you're a bit confused....
I'm not talking storage here.... I use RAID for storage on external drives for my important data. Multiple drives, multiple copies of the same data.
But I won't tell you....

anyway.... back to your fans and what not

All along I thought a ducted fan was just a fan with a center axle and rotating blades inside a duct that increased air velocity.

I do not see any rotating blades inside or outside the Dyson fan.

I am now considering grabbing a sledge hammer and beating my Mac to a pulp because you say it "doesn't actually work very well"
Something I was totally unaware of prior to your post.

Thanks for the heads-up WT

Peace,

Did you forget this post Black Thumb? I might be dumb but I caught the sarcasm. And it looks like a textbook ducted fan to me. Not sure what doesn't fit.

I regret my comment about macs. It was just for fun. They are horribly overpriced for what you get. And I find it amusing that so many people think they are so much more than they are. I'm not sure why that would cause you to stop writing for macs. People still buy a lot of them, no?
make sense once.
Macs are fine. They're built for people that need to do very straightforward tasks in most case (some notable exceptions).

Protools is one of those notable exceptions, as is Adobe design software. They are designed specifically for macs and macs are the standard in those industries. But for most people they are buying a pretty piece of hardware to check email. They're buying some false pride.

can we get back on topic? are these fans efficient or useful? effective? how much power it uses etc

everyone knows they are not worth the money but if this technology is widely accepted for public eventually it will be mainstream. could take a while though

They're neat. I wouldn't guess they could get a patent strong enough to prevent knock-offs. There's not much technology in these things. It's some simple fluid dynamics.

I'd bet a dollar you can buy something similar soon for $30

I think they are cool items, but would never pay the outrageous price. The diagrams do not show the impellor, but it will have blades of some type. I think we could rig a powerful air pump to work the same way.

Go to the bottom of the article to see Dyson's own graphics showing the ducted fan. It's the first picture.

The best part is all the BS in that article about it being a "bladeless fan", and then in their own article the graphic at the bottom shows the "axial impeller". Looks a lot like a fan with blades to me... By that definition any centrifugal blowers would count as bladeless fans.

It is pretty cool though, maybe once other companies start working with the idea they will create some efficient, quiet fans. Silence would be good for many of us.

Although I imagine once dust got caught in the "airfoil shaped ramp" it would really take a hit in performance, and a be a total bitch to clean.

haha macs are the shit, apple has the best customer service of any computer company i have ever purchased from. and the fact they work great is awsome too.

From my personal experience, you've just been lucky so far. I doubt i'll ever touch another apple product.

That was just a cheap shot. Macs are fine. They're built for people that need to do very straightforward tasks in most case (some notable exceptions). It's just the mac people that don't really understand the differences and believe the marketing and brand identity which has little to do with reality. They're fine machines with great cases. But for the cost, you could get a PC with a great deal more...everything. And IME my friends macs need a LOT more service than my PCs.

Dyson on the other hand is ALL marketing. There's nothing terribly innovative in his "inventions".
What i have used macs since 1989 and have had pretty much every model since then for photography and audio production. I have never of course had a virus or had to run shitty software to protect my mac from spyware and viruses. There has been no major issues the only time i had a problem was with a imac which was out of warranty and the screen started working periodically i called apple and they paid my local authorized apple repair to fix it. I think the fact that apple makes such great products people find the need to go out of there way to find something wrong. If you look beyond those trying to set some sort of image with there macbook at the coffee shops, you will find macs in recording studios, photography and graphic design companies pretty much everywhere.

way to read dylan. Did you miss how I wrote the EXACT SAME industries were "notable exceptions"?

I too have never had a virus on a PC, great. It really isn't difficult to maintain a decent anti-virus. For the countless other benefits of running PCs I'll take that little bit of inconvenience from the Gates haters.

Yeah way to read WT.
The only hater here is you.
I do not see a single post in this thread bashing "Gates" or his OS.
Only you hating Apple hardware and Apple's OSX / Linux OS.

Again....RIF

How many times do I need to write that is was a harmless cheap shot? get over yourself.

I think it's clear dylan didn't read all of my posts.

when did I write anything about ANY OSs? I ONLY said they were overpriced for what you get.

Are you still pissed your A-hole commentary about the dyson fan was wrong, you're just going to stick around and be an asshole?

WT,

Please read all of your own words beginning with your first post.

Sorry, I will not be joining you in name calling. :thank you:

Dyson Products:

Many of my clients have Dyson products in their homes. I have used many of their products and own a couple. I like companies like Dyson. It is people and companies that push boundaries with new ways of looking at accomplishing any given task that drive innovation.
In the US there is more of a societal thought of inventing as "Here is my issue and what can I make that can do this one task good" & "Now that I made this widget, I will only build apon it, there is no reason to go back and reinvent the wheel." (It is basically because of this type of attitude that the US is so far behind in humanoid robotics ... but that's a different subject entirely ... I'm just saying that I'm glad there are people & companies out there that reinvent and push boundaries. And of course their are hits and misses to the general public.

Air Multiplier Fans
They are loud for their size. The 10in doesn't move a whole lot of air but the bigger sizes perform better. They are using a different way of blowing air from a tradition blade fan and that is cool. In an open area, away from walls, they will perform better ...a 12" dyson on high seems to move the same amount of air as a 10" blade fan on med. I don't really care about the difference in the actual movement of the air (choppy or smooth) but the Dyson's smooth air does feel more like real wind on your face ... constant and smooth
Would I buy one? no

Vacuum Cleaners
DC25 Animal - I Own this.
The best household vacuum I've ever owned or used with pets in the house.
Their vacuums are excellent if you are not the type that is abusing your vacuum ... P.S.- construction material should be picked up with a shop vac not a household vacuum.
I worked out the costs involved over 5 years with a few of my lesser performing vacuums I have owned over the years ... the dyson was actually cheaper in the long runwhile also being the strongest and most versatile.
Would I buy it? Yes, I already did and I'm glad I did

The Dyson Airblade
Quick, Very effective, sanitary and saves energy ... I wish every bar had them in the bathroom.
Would I buy one? If I owned a restaurant or bar .. absolutely. For my my house? If I hit the lotto then yes and I would have it in my kitchen

all that being said ...
If I somehow owned a Amsterdam Coffee House/grow facility. I would love to remove the actual fan out of the Dyson Air Multiplier tabletop 12" model. I would then attach the 6" exhaust from the grow room up to the bottom of it and let it blow a grow room scented smooth wind over my customers.
I bet then I would care about the texture of the air movement ....
