I have been thinking about taking apart my 150w fixtures I have been using so far, and fabricating my own reflectors like piosh. Have you ever used the 150w hps fixtures that are for landscaping? If so, did you notice an increase in light penetration when you went to the no glass reflector style? thanks

:look at this: wow piosh! may i ask the actual dimensions of the inside grow space +lights and pots? btw it seems youre growing in soil, I love soil grows!:jump:
dunno why wow :D , anyway thx...
nuttin special - whole tent has 100cmx50cm , 20 of lenght is used for humidifier ...in fact I use 80x50....lights - 2x 150W hps and pots - 18L each
yep its soil...
in fact the plants are shitty I just paste them here to share....since I jave changed my selfmade wooden growbox to white tent my plants develop like 35% less bud - still dunno why.

A layer of protective glass may allow your plants to be a bit closer to the source of light. However the 10% to 14% of light loss you can expect thru a clear pane far outweighs any benefit. With the small 150's we use, every lumen is precious. In my opinion, only use a glass shield when its absolutly necessary for heat control purposes as in cool tubes.

thank ya good sir. I kinda had the same thought process in my head. I know the 150's dont put out too much lumens, but the heat isnt THAT bad either. For almost the whole grow I have had the lamps about 6" from the tops of the plants, sometimes closer. But I recently fixed the lights to the top, and now they are around 12"-14" from the tops, so I want to remove the glass for extra lumens. thanks for the advice/tip.

With a fan blowing over the top of the light and another in the grow space couldn't we get to within 4 or 5 inches?

Even closer ... mine stays 2-3 inches away from canopy with a single pc fan blowing on bulb and canopy at a slight upwards angle towards exhaust at top.

Other growers get even closer like member "catman", who has had success with bulb being as close as 1 inch from plants.

No cool tube? For either of you? I have a fan blowing across the top of the light, but when my seedlings grow up I am gonna need one blowing through the space between the top of the canopy and the light

Nope. No cool tube here. Actually 150's don't get that hot with a new bulb and proper ventilation. And my 150 has enclosed ballast on top of that! Never got around to remoting it, why bother anyway when heat isn't an issue for me. My temps stay 74-78. All I use is 4 inch pc fan on adapter to blow over canopy and bulb towards exhaust fan.

Interesting, I still wasn't sure on how hot the 150w HPS/MH bulbs would get as I said before I want to run dual 150's; one 150w HPS and one 150w MH to keep a constant even spectrum. By the way I tossed out that other cab idea as I was totally overlooking my previous grow cab, which with a little modificaton can be made into a nice perpetual grow cab. I figure by winter I'll have had reasonable time to put this all together and take some photos so long as the future months are permitting between now and the winter. Since this cab is already built I already know the dimensions. So far its 32 in H x 48 in W x 16 in D after modification however the 1st portion: the mother/clone/seed area will be 32 in H x 16 in W x 16 in D and the second: the flower area 32 in H x 32 in W x 16 in D . Hopefully I can get going on this soon as this is going to be one heck of a project almost full DIY and almost nothing spared. Take care and safe growing guys!

sounds awesome SE. best of luck with your next round of growing. I plan on turning my grow tent into some kind of perpetual harvesting machine like you're doing.

and I wasnt really too sure about the heat either to be honest. I have yet to burn a single leaf when the light was at 6", but i constantly had people acting like they knew shit...telling me to move my light WAY away from them, saying it was too hot at the canopy and shit. I said if it was too hot, the plant would tell me. next grow ill try to push the limits a little more. i didnt wanna be a plant murderer. :)

Thanks Jon this next one should be good! and I wish you and all the rest happy and safe growin'!

BTW I'd also like to note lucky number 7,000th posted, count them I dare you! haha.
