I am really planning on going to a DIY ebb and gro bucket setup next time so there will be plenty of variables but I do plan on doing this more in veg and then leaving them alone for the most part in flower. Like I said, I have twice the room now after doing this. these plants were leafy monsters before I did this and took up both sides of the 4x8. Now only on one side with one light on. do you think I should hang both lights over this one side? the trays they are in are 39 inches by 39 inches. I would have to kick my portable ac on then but would the extra electricity be worth the extra yield? something to think about I guess, let me know what you guys think. next crop will be both sides filled and defoliated. good things happening here. let me know if you have any other ideas. peace smoke respect

Yeah, I'm running two White Russian lesbian midgets side by side comparison. in 2nd week of flowering.

If nothing else, I will reduce my harvesting trim time.

glad to see more folks doing this technique! i have been doing this for years but it was this thread which encouraged me not to do any lolypopping at all while keeping the defoliation constant. a few observations on this technique in different settings:

my grapefruit strain always pops herms around day 65 and is very prone to freak out under light cycle issues, yet I have seen NO herms at all even though i have been defoliating more heavily than usual all through veg and flower. this tells me (at least in this specific strain) that any stress caused by defoliation is minimal.

in some strains i have noticed that after heavy defoliation they will grow TONS of smaller leaves. almost like the plants are saying "pssst...this dude is nuts about destroying fan leaves...just make the little kind from now on...he really hates fan leaves"
also, my c99 makes tons of single bladed tiny leaves, this freaked me out as i associate that with a systemic disease of some kind, but now in day 40 of flowering i have colas (usually the size of a soda can) that look as big around as a coffee can!
no pics till this grow is done, but i am taking some so i might post at a later date.

anyhoo, just some of my anecdotal observations for those wondering about stress or herms. also, i just visited a tiny little 400w cabinet grow (9 1 gal coir pots around a vertical 400w bulb) that harvested 10 oz of totally hard bud using this method. her previous yield was 6oz, she did nothing different but the defoliation....i really see the micro-growers benefiting from this.

thanks again for the awesome info, just DONT TELL ED ROSENTHAL!!
(awww hell go ahead and tell him, he is back in 1985 waiting for your call)

Ok...I'm in on this one. I do just want to really clarify one thing:

Also....is there anything lost on the quality of smoke? taste? ect...

Have never seen any reduction in quality. It is strictly a structural change. If there was ever any ill effect of any kind I would never had carried this technique to the extremes that I do.

So for those of you that have done this....you find no drop in quality of the high and the smoke compared to before you did this (everything being equal: strain, method, environment, etc...)?

Thanks in advance. I know it's been asked before, but I would find it odd if the quality didn't differ one way or another by implementing a new technique. Like I said...just wanna be clear.

I feel like all of you are playing a practical joke on the growing community.

doing the wk6 fan removal was like tossing future hash balls in the trash. crystals way too immature for much of anything, but abundant enough to feel like a sucker for cutting.

that's all I can say for now. staying hopefull tho...

i dont think you want to cut any leaves that have trichs on them my friend, at least I wont and never will. im a huge fan of hash and tumble, bubblebag, or iso everything after harvest. peace and smoke.

ive done this with the chemd clone a few times, and i got zero hermies as a result - just full blown sensimellia.

Since you didn't keep doing this... was the yield lower? Just curious as to the results! Thanks in advance ;-)

Really cool thread...

My Apollolicious are dried and in the jars. No final weight yet but from 2 plants they did very well. The lower buds were rocks and they never even get close to that point. I still have 3 plants going at 53 days right now. 2 chemd that are bud to the bottoms and 1 indiana bubblegum. Apollolicious finished in 42 days but im not sure if defoliating sped things up. The chem and bg semm to be right on track. Apollolicious smells like pineapple n orange. Ill post weight in a few days. My next run ill try and fit 2 more plants in and without defoliating it wouldnt even be an option. Peace LL

a few questions..

a few questions..

Does anyone know of a thread that shows an accurate test of defoliation?
I read a lot of things in this thread that could be taken several ways. Do you cut off the entire fan leaf from the stem, or do you cut it half way leaving some of the fan leaf's stem? Or are they both an option?

:thank you:

I would say take the whole leaf and stem. If you leave the stem it will just dry up or could rot. Whole leaf

Hi all I've been lurking since the thread was started.
At first I was a bit skeptical so I decided to put that aside and give the defoliation technique a go on 2 plants.

Same age,same strain ect. ect.

One is unclipped one is clipped twice so far and both have 4 weeks left.

It's hard to tell from the pics but the defoliated plant seems to have the edge over the other plant so far.

Both are grown from seed but the results so far have convinced me to repeat the process with clones when the tent is freed up.

Great thread and thanks to all involved.

Nice comparison man (;
Keep us in touch.

So...you really can't tell much difference?

I sorta figured that...there is no "one" Holy Grail to growing...or we'ds all be doing it the same way.

Do you think with more practice you could do better? I've seen some outstanding bud here on this thread...but you know...I've seen outstanding bud using other techniques too!

I think there are many ways to grow bud...it all depends on how much "hands on time" you want to invest.

Nice plants by the way...nice job.

I've been following for awhile now and am using this technique on a super lemon haze and jack the ripper, i think i see more single leaf production in the bud do you think this could cause this or just the strain, any comments would be apprecaited.

Really cool thread...

I have not said that i no longer defoliate... not at all...

Why would i stop doing something that increases yeild and grade AAA bud sights?

Curious to what you read to deduce that.... (maybe i need to edit a phrasing or something to make sure no one else thinks i am no longer a defoliator). i am a huge proponet of fan leaf removal & pruining for yeild indoors in general...

Ive noticed quite a bit more single leaf production in all 3 strains i am working with right now so i dont believe its strain dependent
