The main problem is these plants were growing real dense. Before i started pruning you could see that light wouldn't make it down to far. That's why i decided to hit it with the vertical HPS. Since i've done that you can see the nugs growing up that before weren't growing at all. I think the main problem is when you get to high wattage PL-L they retain the same shape but start to put out greater energy for penetration. In my mind this is the main thing you need to grow well, or at least nice dense nugs.
Efficiency may seem better with smaller bulbs but in the end i think the power of say a 2-50w will do better than 4-24w's. When the bulb already covers a long amount of area you want to make sure to put as much power as you can along that whole bulb.
Next time around i'm going with my idea earlier of putting a pl-l on each wall running horizontally. Than have a 70w or 150w CMH dual end bulb on top facing down. I figure this way there is always side lighting going towards the center. Whatever floro light doesn't make it will be covered by the CMH in the center. I figure this way i can maximize my efficiency. Also as long as i make sure most of the bases face the same direction, in-canopy temps will stay cooler than my current setup.
I probably wont be using this cab to flower in again though. This was really an experiment and its working well. Just a lot of time and effort put into something with minimal yields. My main thing is i want to get into breeding.
