That's called aerial layering and you have to do more than just scratch it.

wow- thanks there HC. with a strain that shows early pre flowers you could use those long suckers and air layer. i might use a rapid rooter or park's biosponge cut up the side then sow back together and wait for rots too show. prune n clone in one operation!
When I studied horticulture we propagated a variety of plants by aerial layering.
First we would ring bark a 1-2 cm section of the branch that was to become the new clone. Apply rooting hormone to the wound. Wrap a ball of moist peat moss around the wound. Secure the peat moss to the branch by wrapping a length of black plastic around it and tie off at each end. You could use aluminium foil too. Give it a few weeks and roots should appear from the wound site. Then cut off new clone below the wound and root site, voila, nice big clone.
We made clones up to 12" long with this method. You could use coco instead of peat moss. Just make sure it does not dry out. Personally I just clone the normal way cos I need a high number of clones for SOG and find it easier and faster.

Super thread. Got my first grow of bagseed going and thought I'd try cloning some of them while I got my confidence up. Sounds like a pretty foolproof method. Can't wait. Just trying to be patient and not rush things.

This time it took me a night and a morning but I reread this thread.
As it would be.. I know the soil and can grow nice plants like many of us can but it's these humble tasks, such as cloning, that can be worrisome.
Nice to refresh the thought processes on cloning once again..
This time out I have large soil blocks. It's my thing.

What time of day do you prefer to take your clones? Ive heard that taking them later in the day might be better?

I've cloned 23 in the last couple of months with 100% success rate. No lamps, just sitting in a heated propagator on a window shelf and the last batch I took was from a mother that hadn't been under a lamp in about 4 months.
My method is
1. Take cutting and immediately put into a glass of water for 20 secs to stop any air bubbles.
2. Remove cutting and scarify the lower 1/2" with a Stanley knife blade- the roots will then shoot out of the sides of the stem too.
3. Dip in Clonex for about 1 - 2 mins.
4. Place in rockwool cube then in heated propagator.
It takes about 15-17 days to root them fully, although the roots start to show at the top of the scarification after about 7 days.

This is definetly cloning made easy. So far I'm 26 for 26.
I just took the cuttings, soaked in water for a few minutes. Dipped the ends in rooting hormone and stuck them in plastic cups with slightly moist MG soil. Put all of them in a rubbermaid storage tub with a 23 watt CFL outside of the tub. Misted the sides of the tub twice daily and the clones when they looked unhappy. Had roots showing as fast as 7 days or as long as 12 days. Seems like as soon as roots show, they really take off.
