Buds lost 75% of weight but stems don't snap.

Hey guys,

I harvested my crop pretty much exactly a week ago and this is my first ever harvest. I manicured the buds completely and left them hanging upside down to dry in my drying tent. After 7 days the buds have lost 75% of their wet weight, i know this because i weighed each bud before i hung them up to dry.

I tried the snap test on one of the stems and it still folds pretty easily. At this rate it seems like it will be another couple of days before they snap completely.

My question is, because they have lost 75% of their original weight already, are they ready to be put into a curing jar to cure or should i let them dry a bit longer. They look like they would burn through pretty well because they seem pretty dry but let me know wat u guys think.

Cheers,
Penguin

PS. Here are some pictures of the buds as they are now to give an idea of how dry they are.

It sounds like the flower mass feels dry to the touch. I'd put the product into a jar and check it fairly often for moisture. When the flower mass begins to feel a little wet, air out the jar. It needs to redistribute the moisture in the stem. Once that happens, the stems will snap.

You could put them in a paper bag or cardboard box for 24 hours before you jars them, just to be sure you don't get mold. I'd rather smoke a perfectly dry bud than a moldy one.

If the buds feel cripsy dry to the touch, but the stems are not you need to sweat your buds. Find a plastic bag of any type. Ziplock works better since you can get a good seal on it. Place your buds in the bag, zip shut and let them sit. Once you notice condensation forming, at this time open the bag to breath for an hour or two. Repeat until there isn't any moisture left in the bud or stem. What is happening is the outside parts of the bud are drying out before the inside parts. So what the sweating accomplishes is it moves the moisture from the inside and spreads it evenly out again. When you burp the bag you once again are allowing the outside parts of the bud to dry out again. Repeating the process will even out moisture and burping will release it. Its a process that can take a couple of days, but it ensures that there won't be any moisture going into the jars with the buds.

Ah k cheers simon and KGB47. I'll throw the buds in a paper bag overnight and see how they are in the morning then put em in jars and keep checking for moisture :)

This is basically the same thing "Simon" was telling you a few posts up.You can use a jar instead of a plastic bag if you want to.

Check out the thread titled "The perfect cure"..It will help you.

@ Phedrosbenny. It doesn't matter if someone repeats an earlier post man. He might have skipped over it or might write the same thing in a different way which might be easier to understand. Either way i'm sure he was just trying to help.

Btw, do u have any suggestions urself as to wat i should do?

It's best if you do what the thread in Simon's sig suggestions (perfect cure every time.) Due to the difference in humidity/temp/air flow etc none of us can really give you a precise answer. A $15 hygrometer is worth it so you don't ruin the entire crop (not saying you will.. I did once.)

just sounds like they need a bit more time to me, make sure you sweat them in jars or a sealable plastic bag. I've also seen stems take a while to get brittle on cannabis that hasn't been properly flushes of all fertilizer.

I think you must have misunderstood what I was saying.

I hang the entire plant to dry, and at around 25 - 28% of harvest weight the thinnest popcorn-bud stems snap. At that point, the thick stems with the large colas are still flexible. I think if you wait until those thick stems on your buds snap, they will be too dry to cure.

If they've lost that much of their water weight, then they're ready to jar. I put mine in a jar when they've lost 70% or so. That said, you MUST keep an eye on them and burp the jars and jostle them a bit to move the buds around or else you WILL end up with moldy buds. I find that jarring them at 70% and burping them frequently for the next two weeks or so produces a great cure.

The whole "stems snap, ready for jars" thing is essentially correct.

Don't stress the wet weight to dry weight ratio though - that can swing up or down a good bit depending on how much water the plant is retaining.

For example, I like to let my plants really drink up the remaining moisture in the medium, so the pots are pretty much dry when I chop.

These buds dry literally days faster than buds I cut with a significant amount of moisture left in the medium.

Can't be certain what is going on, but it seem clear to me that when the medium is wet, the plants are also holding more water.

Anyways, don't rush it man.. Unless your relative humidity is really high or really low, just go by the book and wait till the stems snap before you throw them into jars.

Congrats on your first harvest, btw!
