Strange Slime buildup on roots

nice spray set up. lots of sprayers.

I did not know you could run organics in the spray tubs.

Is that copper tubing in the controller bucket?

im not running organics, just beneficial bacteria, well bacteria comes from organics like earth worm castings, but Im going to run GH chem nutes.

no copper, just the color of the earth nectar/earth ambrosia in the water.

few pics of the treated plants....making a slight comeback.

the first pic is all the same strain & they seem to be doing ok....just a few twisted leaves

the next 2 are all different strains...some look great, some not so much.

So its sounding like its unanimous at this point. Growing beneficial bacteria is the solution.

Since I had my problem after the first few days in the flowering area I havn't had a single other hitch. All the plants recovered fully the dead roots fell off and new ones continued growing with no problem.

I probably have one of the simplest systems RDWC systems I've seen around. I vegg aquaponically and keep the water around 80 degrees depending on the weather. The flower system runs a bit cooler, but I never even bothered checking the temp there.

My advice to anyone battling this is to immediately dump all the nutes out of your system and run with straight water. Don't use distilled or RO water. Start by starving the bacteria that are eating up your plants. Remember, plants are living organisms with their own immune system. They can fight off bacteria, but not when your feeding the heck out of the bad guys.

I have mixed feelings about the EW tea. I do worm composting and can tell you there are crap tons of beneficial bacteria in there. But I would think buying it commercially, its probably been sterilized and your not actually working with any live organisms.

Building a bio-filter is super easy. You don't need to go buy a bunch of fancy stuff. 5 gallon bucket filled with lava rocks (you need A LOT of surface area!) water runs in the top and runs out the bottom. Put it in line anywhere in your system and forget about it.

It takes a while for a colony of bacteria to build up, be patient, add the nutes back into the system slowly untill your running full steam.

Another good addition is h2o2 and hygrozyme mixed in pure water. The h2o2 will wipe out the bacteria while giving an oxygen boost to the roots. The hygrozyme will break down the dead root mass and convert it to carbs that the plants can use. But yes, like the last poster stated do not feed for at least a week.

You would be feeding them with the addition of the zyme product. H2O2 has been tried many times over and has failed against the slime. Read up. . .

h202 DOES NOT work.....been using it for years and never had a problem until the BROWN SLIME!....h202 does not affect it

Speaking of which, I just got hit with the slime again. One thing I know for sure is that it happens when it warms up outside. Never during the winter. It's in my tap water from a local lake! It's jacking up my plants pretty bad right when they should be starting their stretch. Crap! Looks like Ill have stunted plants this crop even though Ive fixed the slime problem. If it ain't one thing it's another lately. It was my fault I think since I used some pesticides to keep away fungus gnats and root aphids. The pesticides ended up killing my bacteria herd and left the roots exposed to the slime.

Use gnatrol or mosquito dunks for the gnats. They are both the same bacteria and will not kill off anything in the rez.

Yep, that's exactly what Ive been using for the gnats. It's the root aphids that require a more abrasive approach and sure enough the pesticides I used (imidicloprid and malathion) wiped out my bioherd after application along with the aphids. I could actually tell it was happening because my res bubbles differently when bacteria are being killed (bubbles much smaller and more foamy), but I didn't take steps at that time and I should have. That's all the slime needed to gain a foothold. It's not a terrible infection, just very noticable and it affected the plants at exactly the wrong time. They are surviving. Im going to run straight tap and Aquashield only tonite and add a root accelerator tomorrow, then add back nutes. Hopefully they'll only lose a week or so of stretch and maybe just result is more compact but dense plants. Keep fingers crossed!

Hey guys..Ive been hit by this damn algae and it sucks..I just ordered some physan 20 but i need to do something while it gets here. its complete locked out my nutes i think. leaves are starting to yellow quick. ive had it for a little over a month and ive been bleaching and scrubbing like crazy, changing the res every 3 days. I have a circulating drip sys but i think im gonna with a bubbler sys.. I had a 2 month old plant that i tried to transplant from the drip to a bubbler and completely failed!! The roots were slimey and brown. The plant was dead my the next morning..super sad. I have another 2 month old that i wanna switch to a bubbler but im afraid its probably going to have the same problem.
So what can i do to save it from this parasite!? Im about to tear down my drip until the physan gets here so i can clean it. I was going to hand water the plant in the mean time..
I need some advice on how to clean the roots, flush and all so i can try to save this thing. Should i water with H2o2? :dunno:
Im kinda new at this

You really should just take the time to read the whole thread. It is all covered and then some. Not much you can do until the Physan arrives. It's about the only thing that kills the algae slime.
-----

So Im sick of dealing with this slime crap. 3 years on and off, mostly in the warm months. Lots of lost potential due to stunted plants or dead slimed clones, etc. My current crop is recovering with fresh root growth but I lost a couple of weeks of growth smack in the middle of the stretch so plants are stunted.
I am now UV sterilizing ALL of my plant water. ALL OF IT! My RO system now feeds into a 20gal tub for a few hours a day with the UV sterilizer in the tub running constantly. All water is scrubbed by RO and UV before going into any hydro containers whatsoever. So far this seems to have been effective. RO only doesn't necessarily remove the slime spores so UV is also a required step to eliminate it entirely. Even beneficial bacteria innoculation was turning out to be not enough. I'll let you guys know how it works out long-term. Im sick of this slime shit.

I read through this whole thread about a week ago and highlighted all of richyrich post last page.

clean your roots by plucking off the dead ones, and cleaning in a tub a water....I would just flush with ph'd water untill the physan gets there....then use physan @ 3ml per 25 gallons.

update on my findings......great white is the shit!....very expensive but it works.....im also using earth ambrosia & earth nectar @ 1/4 tsp per gallon....plants made a full recovery and are at day 9 of 12/12 now......also trying out Plant Success Soluble Mycorrhizae because its a little cheaper than great white, & made by the same company..and all the bacteria #'s were higher per CC with the Plant Success.

What does ev1 do with their physan diluted water. I live where there are septic tanks and well water..don't want to contaminate anything.

youd be better off contacting the company that makes physan, or your city.....tell them your using it to clean dog kennels or something

I have something like that slime of your grow on my clones
after about a week or so. I think it was the fact that the
clones were sitting in water for too long.

Now, I treat clones like plants after the second day and
water them just a little. No more letting a cutting stand
in water for too long. It may have been the water temp
as well.

I do like Tanratula and Piranha. A little goes a long way.

Would any of the slime doctors look at my thread?

https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=176195

Also, as I'm trying to figure out if this is slime, was the slime hard to get off? I was able to just spray wash this crud off. My stuff seems more like the color of my nuets. A bit more gritty than slimey.

thanks guys!

Looks like the brown algae slime to me. Treat as indicated in this thread and explained in the last couple pages.
