I've personally stopped buying BP gas because of their little... mistake (even though my CC gives me a 5% cut on price of that brand).

Not all mistakes are worthy of this measure, after all, BP relies on millions of dollars per day in purchases to survive. But not all mistakes are like this.
They fucked up majorly as far as preparation, leaving out a switch that would have allowed this shit to have been shut off soon after the fire took place. (I mean, come on, the only shut off switch for the well is located on the fucking flaming rig itself?!?!) They also went ahead and filled the burning rig with water while putting out the fire, which caused what could have otherwise been a floating flare off until fixing (arguably bad, but relatively better) to become a massive ecological disaster. So yea, planning ahead for the win! This is something that oil companies have a hard time doing, though, because they know as well as we do that oil's gonna run out some day pretty soon.

I couldn't care less who votes for what, I am just interested in whether or not this particular group of folks here uses this measure to influence the way the world is lived on or if it hasn't changed your habits at all. I know there are probably some folks in here that only ride bikes, which has got to be annoying, despite the fact that we all need oil, whether it's for a car, or not...

So yea, who is hitting them where it hurts?

the problem is once you decide to make a conscious decision to not reward bad behavior, which oil producer are you left to buy from?

in addition to that, not buying from BP stations, i can jive - but it isn't like you're guaranteed no BP produced oil just by buying gas at Aamaco.

My overall answer is that when I say, "I have stopped purchasing gas from BP," I don't just mean BP branded filling stations.
But I definitely won't be copping-out: "Hard to achieve goal (punish firm for bad behavior), abort goal-seeking"
The specific answer to your question is in the post directly after yours.

Granted, you are bound to spend some of your money with BP in some way especially when you consider the products you consume that seem unrelated to oil but in fact use a lot of it during production and distribution.

Peace

hmmm...i can that wasn't my intention, at least.

the only answer i have is to use as little as i can, be it from BP or elsewhere - as none of them are showing me behavior i see as worth reward. i can't really say i'm boycotting BP stations, as...there's only one in a 30 mile radius, and it's a shithole. i didn't go there before the spill, won't after - but all the same, oil that BP sucks out of the ground is frequently mixed with oil Chevron pulls out, and with Exxon, etc, etc, etc. there are specific company refineries that deal w/only their product...and there are refineries that take oil from exxon, chevron, bp - whoever - process it, and distribute it back to those companies. i'm just saying not pulling into a BP station isn't a guarantee you aren't using BP oil.

i'm not saying 'it's hard, don't do it'. i'm saying it isn't as simple as portrayed.

Sorry, I didn't think you were promoting a cop-out, but I didn't make that clear. Thanks for the input for sure!
Yea, the general principle is that oil is something we should be avoiding more every day, I agree with that...

When I was a kid I worked at a generic gas station. The gas in the ground always came from a major producer, just some days it would be Shell, other days Exxon, etc so if you buy from a no-name you may well be purchasing BP gas.

I wasn't a BP guy before this, and won't be after, but that's only because I think BP gas isn't good gasoline.

As far as pollution is concerned, I'm fine if they pave the planet. One world, one people, one huge slab of concrete.

If it's the only station in 50 miles I'll stop there, but otherwise, yes, they're on my boycott list.

I've topped buying Arco, we don't have BP branded stations where I live. Also will stop using Oil Can Henry's for my changes they use Castrol which I like, but Quakers state will work fine. I've switched the gas to Chevron, i discovered that my car gets better mileage than with Arco.

It kills me how in Berkeley CA, supposedly the greenest most environmentally conscious place in America simply because ARCO has the cheapest gas there are still lines at the pump.

I usually use Mobil for my car. It seems to burn the slowest. BP used to be my 2nd choice, but not anymore.
