LC's soiless mix

Hey everyone...just wondering if LC's soiless mix #2 is ok to use outdoors in 65 gallon smart pots. Also wondering if anyone with any experience with this mix can recommend using Promix or one of the fox farm products. I will most likely be using Recipe #3 (guano tea and kelp) but any suggestions and/or tips will be appreciated.

To the OP: LC's are sphagnum peat based mixes.

You have to understand there are literally hundreds of thousands of people growing various plants in mixes like these across the USA and in many other countries as well. In home gardens, family farms, commercial farms, etc. And all of those plants you see for sale in retail stores, garden centers, supermarkets, etc. etc., 99% of them are in peat based mixes. peat, vermiculite, perlite, d. lime, bam.

In the past I have tried foxfarm, biocanna, humboldt, and mixed and matched a few of my own lines with different company's products. I have to say Humboldt has been the best so far but just looking for something different outdoors this year rather then using a certain line.
Thanks Carl, thats is a very good point and I think Im going with this mix. Still would love to know if anyone has any experience with this mix in raised beds/smart pots though?

Phatty,
LC's mix is the greatest. I wouldnt bother with buying the FF or any brand names, just go get bales of peat, and go from there.

All that name brand stuff is is used soil, just like any dirt, its all been used..

If you mix the recipe rjght, you can build your own at a fraction of the cost.

One thing I do reccomend is testing the ph of the water you will use first. High ph water doesnt need all the lime the mix calls for.... I found out the hard way.

Good luck to you

w/ an organic mix like LCs, water @ 7.9 shouldn't hurt anything

-maybe use 1 TBS/gal dolo lime instead of 2?

-making compost tea w/ it will bring it towards neutral

something in the water is making it basic. could be calcium along w/ other minerals.

LC's mix # 2 is a good one. but i personally would go with number one...
had some issues with the pro-mix. it has added ferts in it. do some research if thats what you choose to use. honestly i would go with number one.
and as far as the nute recipe goes, i would definitely do recipe number two. just add the dry ferts right into the soil and water from then on. you really need to have everything right for the teas to work correctly. lots of bucket work and potential for major complications.
this is not the exact recipe im using but its very similar.

proof is in the pudding.

Phatty, I would ph the water down some, but thats just what works for me. It sure as hell is not going to hurt anything.

I agree with intotheunkonwn...

why avoid soils with added nutrients? I mean i can understand why if i start feeding right away with the teas, but what if i was to use fox farm OF (this is the soil i usualy use and dont feed for 2-3 weeks), and didnt use the teas until needed? The plants should have enough nutes in the mix for close to a month or so i would think.

sorry i should say that was more of a question and did not intend to sound like i was argueing the topic

when the recipe calls for bone meal, blood meal, or other added amendments and a grower combines these amendments w/ the pre-charged soil mix, imbalances and/or excesses result and stunt plants

usually = too hot

no experience w/ ffof, some swear by it, others avoid it

i have my recipes

I understand that adding amendments to an already amended soil will most likely screw everything up, but i will be using teas and not putting amendments in the soil except earthworm castings. I also will not feed the teas until the plant needs it.

really man i would build your own soil. FF stuff is the lazy way out, and i would rather build my own soil any day than use that stuff.
you know exactly whats in it, you can put your own "love" into it, its easier to go back and retrace steps if you run into problems. trust me amending the soil as such is much easier to deal with than the teas. read the link i put up. im sure it will help you make a good decision. but hey do what it is you think you should do. all we can do is give you advice, and ultimately you make the choice you end up making. good luck man

Besides, making your own and mixing it by hand will make you smarter, or so they say ;) https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=174838
