Mine just turned on so I can't look but I am pretty sure there was an H on the horizontal bulbs I got.

I also believe there is an H designation and none on the vert., but I may be wrong.
I also think that the H's have a green dot on the end and verts not, also I may be screwy on this.
I am pretty high.

Been using 2 x cmh bulbs for a while and very impressed with their relative coolness and light spectrum. Thing is i forgot all about the horizontal and vertical thingo unitil about 1 min ago... i have one of my H bulbs in a vert setup. Does this matter? It seems to be working well...

If I remember correctly, it's either the GE or the Philips (possibly both & maybe other brands as well) the vertical can using in any direction but the horizontal is supposed to be only with in something like 45degrees of horizontal but not positive. It maybe the other way around.

How many hours does it have on it? It is my understanding that burning them out of position will shorten their life, considerably. If I were to guess, I would say you will get about 1/2 to 3/4 of it's rated life. How much or how soon, I couldn't tell you. Plus, burning it out of position might shift the spectrum enough to reduce the effectiveness. But, I don't know any of that for a fact.

to me it looks like philips and osram are still on top, try their website catalogues for informations as there is a lot of and easy to find! ge prices seem to be lower? some of their bulbs aint bad either

I started using the Philips a couple months after their initial release in 2001. They only released a vertical for the first few years. I talked a couple shops in Seattle in to stocking them. Nearly everyone that ran them burned the verts in a horizontal hood for years. Never had a burn out, didn't notice a difference when they released the horizontal. The main difference seems to be more arc tube support in the horizontal bulb.

I called Philips tech line about the vert running horizontal and they did not express great concern.

I have a 250w vert in a PL horiz hood right now. I was too lazy to go buy a horiz when I had 2 verts sitting around. Crazy, I found 5 - 400w (3 hor / 2 vert) and 3 - 250w verts in a box in my garage?????????? I guess I was on a buying spree for some reason. Oh yeah, wholesale under $40.00each.

We had a discussion awhile back about the positions. I am of belief that they are one and the same bulb, but I could also be quite wrong. If I am not mistaken, I read in the patent somewhere that the design allows the orientation to be universal, which I think was also one of the patent attributes.

What will happen if you hang a horizontal vertically? explode? I was under the impression you can hang a standard say lumatek HPS bulb either vertical OR horizontal is this not true? thanks in advance,

hoosier - I need to look, buy I think you are correct. When they 'revised/upgraded' for horiz, they just made it more robust. No reason I can see to worry about a Horiz running vert.

BTW - I really like the little 3k 150w on the digital ballast. Coupled with a 4k 250w it makes a nice combo...... I have ambient temp issues durring the first 2 hrs of 12/12 so I bring the 150w on for the first 2hrs and then the 250w. Works to help. As soon as I get healed I will add some cooling.

Cheers guys it has been running for 6 months with no obvious diff to the one i have horizontally above my veg space. Its a phillips. Hopefully it doesnt explode!!

I have mine in cooltubes... the el cheapo tube with the halfcircle of foil as reflector for veg. Thinking of getting rid of the foil and useing something else. I recently bought a Jorge Cervantes book and he mentions this type of tube creates a hot spot and isnt much good. Which ones are good for tight spaces?

Does a cmh also create a hotspot through the glass?

This is my veg area but it only has one bulb there now.

Hoos; i remember the debate that was being had about the position and there were some accusations about PHILLIPs faking a second bulb to make more $ from the different positions.

So some of you are running these H bulbs V. Good to know. Ill keep that in mind.

its really funny that some people really did.. philips actually changed descriptions for some cmh models from static burning position to free for use, which is exactly the opposite

btw they also reported that; when you change the burning position you may get a lower light output, faster efficiency drop and changed spd (resulting in lower cri) which doesnt certainly mean its bad for growing bud (can also be better.. no one can tell) and i cant remember any phrase telling that a changed burning position increase the chance of explosions - dont worry too much

jaded1 - SunPulse has a very poorly make knock off the Philips 400w & 250w cmh available. The rest of their bulbs are pulse start metal halide with a more traditional halide design. Shady stuff!

The horizontal cmh design from Philips is more robust than the vertical (original design) so no it won't 'blow-up' when out of position.

Woohoo ... my new 400W CMH is finally up and running
So far I'm only using it for vegetation since I'm preparing my plants for outdoor.
I have it plugged to Vossloh Schwabe NaHJ 400 PZT.279 magnetic ballast for HPS/MH (HS/HI) lamps with a PZE 400D clipon unit with integrated IPP+ ignitor in case any Europeans wonder what ballast to buy. Oh yeah ... and have that wire at least 1.5 mm wide ;-)

Better pics coming later tonight but took a night shot while they were just before 50% flower. So far I have already overgrown the bud size of some finished plants of the same strain, same soil, same room. Just the added .8Kw of CMH spectrum.
If things continue as they are I will easily increase yield by 30-50%.
When I get done I will get organized and go thru my records and do a weekly comparison by photo of the same room under 2Kw HPS and then with the added .8Kw of CMH. It is rather eye opening.
