CANNABIS NOW FOUR TIMES STRONGER

A secret police study involving scientists growing crops of cannabis has revealed New Zealand now has super-strength strains of the drug.

In May last year, Sunday News revealed police and Environmental Science and Research ( ESR ) used sophisticated hydroponic equipment to complete three cannabis growing cycles, nursing six plants at a time, 18 in total, to maturity.

The findings of the study, to be published in Forensic Science International, and released exclusively to Sunday News earlier this week, revealed the drug is now more than four times stronger than it was when ESR last tested it in 1996.

The THC level - the primary intoxicant - varied between 4.35% and 25.3% during the study completed under Ministry of Health licence between 2004 and 2006.

When ESR last tested the Class C drug, they found an average THC level of just 6%.

The THC levels varied considerably, as did yields, during the latest study - due to the growers lack of cannabis-cultivation knowledge, the ESR report read.

"The inexperience of the growers was evidenced by different problems encountered in each of the three cycles, each of which would be expected to negatively impact the yield and THC data obtained."

Cannabis potency is believed to have remained stagnant from 1976 to 1996. But police believe it has increased significantly in recent years due to criminals using more sophisticated growing methods, helped by the availability of specialised equipment, like that sold at hydroponic specialist shops some of which police raided across the country this week.

More than 250 people were arrested on more than 750 charges as part of the two-year undercover operation which targeted shops such as Switched on Gardener and large-scale cannabis-growing enterprises allegedly linked to the business and other similar companies.

According to the cannabis study, the first six plants grown were "purchased from an illegal grower" and were a variety known as Red Devil. The second cycle used cuttings from the first, and the last used plants from a police raid - meaning the cannabis grown throughout the study was the same as that commonly purchased by users on the streets.

Scientists yielded more than 5kg of cannabis from the 18 plants. Sold by the ounce, at the going rate of $350, the crop would have been worth more than $60,000.

Scientists grew the drugs in a room "comparable to the average New Zealand bedroom, which is a space commonly used to grow cannabis indoors", the report reads.

"It's a serious drug. And it's very clear that long-term usage has very long-term effects ... it's not the social drug of the 60s any more ... it is a drug that causes serious harm," Detective Inspector Stuart Mills said.

Mills, chief of the National Drug Intelligence Bureau, said the study findings backed-up police fears the drug had become more potent.

"We've been aware through various techniques and our information that THC level has been increasing, and this study confirms it."

Assistant commissioner Gavin Jones said police and ESR undertook the study to determine the size of potential harvests and gauge THC levels which had increased dramatically worldwide over recent years.

Police needed to know how strong our cannabis was so they could "start benchmarking trends and patterns", and compare them to international levels, he said.

"Internationally it's up around the 20% mark, so we're just not quite sure what it is here," Jones told Sunday News in May last year.

The study said the cannabis information was needed to assist in the court process, "when they are considering the severity of the offending, and in particular how much income is being derived from such an illegal operation".

A preliminary investigation into outdoor growing cannabis had shown THC levels averaged almost 11%.

This is the second article I've read in as many months about the anti-cannabis propaganda being laid out by the powers that be in New Zealand. It's like a damn ripple effect, this oppression touching every person one ever expanding ridge after ever expanding ridge at a time. Those responsible for starting it need to step up and change this world wide injustice beginning this fall brought to you by ? The "kind" folks in the golden state maybe? However it goes down - this aggression will not stand, man.

They should get some of us to do the tests. That way they don't run into the hurdles that result from inexperienced growers with their varied yields and THC contents!! Hire the pros!!

How does the relate to the treaty with the USA on not growing Cannabis?

I mean in the USA we are limited to one farm where cannabis is officially grown doesn't New Zealand have the same relationship with the USA to not grow cannabis?

I also want to point out that strong cannabis came out of Mexico in the 60's and 70's just as strong as what we have now. High THC isn't anything new.

That we all have access to better Genetics well that may be a crime for New Zealand.. Now if they can just create a cannabis that puts more wool on sheep then New Zealand would find a way to legalize it.

Hey all you drug warriors out there, ready to have your minds FUCKING BLOWN?

Bacardi 151 is approximately fifteen times stronger than the average wine.:O

Overhyped bullshit as usual. As becomes painstakingly obvious with that example, yes more concentrated things can get you to a higher level of intoxication but for the most part people ingest less of the stuff in order to get the desired effect.

What a load of bull, some of us have been smoking for forty or more years. What harmful effects? Also, the stats they provided probably are inflated like most gov. reports.:plant grow:

5Kg from 18 plants?

5Kg from 18 plants?

Damn...they must have been running crusty buckets and had monster plants!! That's like almost 13Lb. They probably measured the leaves and roots and medium too hehheh!! How the fak could they have that good of yields with soo many reported grower inexperienced problems. Fuckin propaganda machines. They can't even get their lies straight.

of course they measured the wet weight of roots and all. I wonder what the thc content would be averaged of the wet weight roots and all.

Seems like the article hasn't been published in Forensic Science International yet - at least I couldn't find it last day when I looked for it. Could be an interesting read that might give some insight into the methods they used for measuring yield and potency.

More off the wall bullshit for the paranoid, mis-informed people of these crazy countries that dont allow people to grow a plant....A PLANT! If only these radical countries would put more time into curing cancer or Aids, Im sure they would have found a cure by now, BUT ATLEAST we all know weed is bad for us.....WTF! What a complete WASTE!

The humor I thought of was.. The Japanese used to send us stuff and we made fun of made in Japan. Turns out that Japan decided to send us what we would buy. They didn't think Americans wanted quality just volume at low prices.

We now have stores that sell things for 99 cents and made in Japan is replaced by Made in China.

If we stop buying schwag then the quality would go up is all I can think of.

I've seen pressed brick weed. Nothing to brag about.

Hey I have a question why doesn't Mexico make Hashishes?

Let me guess someone was proud they grew plants so are weighing the roots and all. LOL Leo doesn't want to look bad in the eyes of experienced growers..
Then to get the high percentages they just use the flowering tips. So on the one hand they grew pounds and on the other they suggest the whole grow is quality! LOL I doubt it.

So they are wanting to secretly look good to us in a funny sort of way..

I wonder if they took photos or if any beans were made?

I'd grow some just to see if they are exaggerating or telling the truth.. Newbe LEO growers doing as well as experienced home-growers? That is suspect.

Maybe we can have a New Zealand Cup? Leo could enter their cured bud and we can see if they are really telling the truth.

It's a secret lab. And their data is all BS. My guess is they didn't grow anything. Their claim is that the sophisticated equipment is why the THC content has allegedly increased in the last 14 years. Who here believes that?? Don't ya see what they're doing? Especially with reference to the Switched on Gardener shops they recently busted. They've now fabricated all the evidence they need to make a concerted effort or even specific laws to make grow equipment illegal, probably to protect the children from this drug that causes "serious harm". If growers can't possess the equipment, they can't grow the buds.

That's my theory and I'm stickin to it.

They need to do some testing to compare this ultra potent pot to some weak and strong liquers and pills, Then they will truely see where the pills and alcohol cause much worse long term effects and much stronger immediate highs which are far worse then that of marijuana!

Give one guy 5 shots of strong liquer, Give another 5 xanax and finally give a guy a whole ounce of marijuana to comsume, As quick as possible.

Then field test each person before during and after, See who performs best, I garuntee while the drunk guy and guy fucked on those pills, can hardly walk talk or function properly, The guy who comsumed a whole ounce of this ultra potent pot will score much higher then that of the other 2, Then all these idiots can rub their heads and wonder why pots illegal and these hard drugs are legal!
