EZ Clone or Build your Own?

I built my own using the sprayer manifold from a broken ez cloner. best thing I've ever done. first version wasn't as sweet, because the lid was straight across the top at the point that it attached to the bottom, so water would leak out on the sides and I would have to add water every other day. The solution for version 2.0 was the Rubbermaid roughneck Large size. the lid slope down from the outside rim where it clips on. All of the netpots are below the lid line now, no more leaks. rooted clones in 6-8 days :)

I am just getting ready to buy my first ez-cloner. I have made two and both are hit-or-miss with cloning. One run I will have 100% in a week, next 0 roots in 2-3 weeks. I have about the purchase price of a retail unit sunk into my two failures. So, my total cost for a cloner will be over $600, vs. $300 if I had just ponied up the dough in the first place. It has cost me a little more than this dollar amount due to the fact that I have depended on clones to root and have sat by for weeks with empty E&F trays while I am waiting on a second clone run with rapid rooters.

As stated previously, it is a lot cheaper to just buy a proven system than try to DIY and meet with failure.

DIR vs. DIY

Thats how I look at it to a failed batch of clones would cost me more then a ez-cloner would so rather then spending all the time and money to build something that might now work and end up buying one anyways I would rather just buy one in fact I am looking into getting a new bigger one

EZ cloners are not that expensive when you look at it. You get a solid system that is way stronger than any rubbermaid container. No tinkering, solid proven design. Thats called "added value"

They dont sell millions of these things per month. If they did, their cost would go down. That goes for anything in hydro.

You can always sell it when done. I sold mine a while back on Craigslist.

Sorry, it always hits nerve when I hear people complain about how expensive hydro stuff is. Remember these people arent selling thousands and thousands every day, cost to manufacture and deliver is higher.

Hi dtfsux,
Thank you for your comment. Well I'm not looking to hit any nerves here :) I'm just one of those people that visually prices things accordingly. I see what it does and I see what it contains. Does the price coincide with the design and parts? No. Is it worth it? Yes. Would I buy it? Absolutely. I'm also a big DIY fan so a project like this would add to personal self achievement as well as productivity. So yes the price is steep for what my eyes are inspecting but I give the EZ Cloner the due credit it deserves for being a solid out the box system.

Don't get me wrong if I build mine - it's really not going to be far from the original price of an EZ Cloner 60 site unit. The pump alone will run me 100 bucks so I'm looking to spend 200 total for the parts alone. It's more personal satisfaction at the end. But like Cutty stated earlier - if it fails on me I'd still end up buying the EZ Cloner with added money down the drain that could have been saved. So in the end I just want to take a seat and smoke an L while looking at my hard work ;)

And please don't apologize. I love it when people speak their minds in the effort of constructive criticism that may/will benefit us all as a whole. After all this is a community and you are my neighbor - virtually speaking :)

Yes that roughneck is most definitely the way to go!!

I have a DIY it works great and its a rubermade ruffneck. I was told that is doesn't leak and as far as I've done it there right. Its been going good for two weeks now. I got lots of pics.

Hi GWE,
What's good brother? You know I want the pics lol. Are they linked on your page?

stinkbuddies has plans for a nice one on the downloads page. I built one in an 18 gal a 14 gallon roughneck. I like the 14 gallon one the best.

To seal the top, cut a piece of trashbag or heavy plastic about 14 " wide and long enough to go completely around the top, then use duct tape to tape it to the inside lip of the top. tuck the plastic down the inside lip of the tub and keeps any leakage from occurring....

if you need pics I can snap you one up.

Hope this helps.

How much is 300 bucks? Lil more than a half. IMO just buy the EZ Cloner.

I built 3 cloners. It was fun. Yea it worked. But they all leaked. The EZ Cloner does not leak, gives me 100% success and for folks like me who need it.....its aesthetically pleasing. LOL

Best 300 bucks I ever spent. It works like a sewing machine if you keep it clean.

Wow!

3000GPH on this cloner.. This is what I was talking about in reference to misting as opposed to water droplets. I believe that the higher the mist rate then the closer you will get to having a fog environment. The better the root structure from clone then the better your overall harvest. I will gladly pay the 999 for this.

HippyJohnny I saw the DIY video too. VERY DETAILED!! Very nice!!!!!!!!

Hi Admiral,
Now I'm just thinking is the EZ Cloner going to be as effective as my Cracked out cloner. Forget the 950 pump I'm going with a 1000 minimum and a 25 gallon roughneck. A little aluminum tape up top and she'll be an aesthetic little tease of a cloner..

EZ-Cloner® 120, $400 to the house

$400/120 $3.33 a clone. That's your investment paid back the first full run.

It is very cheap to buy quality.

the problem all of my friends that have easy cloners have is that the airpump craps out and piece break off of the manifold. no hydro stores have extra pieces on hand, so it's always a lengthy debacle to fix them. I never use an airstone in my home made one. I use a 1296 gph pump or whatever the 1200 model is of those eco pumps. I have seen far more ez cloner disaster runs with dead clones than I've ever had with the roughneck.

we keep the extra EZcloner parts at our shop, dudes come in everyday talking about building there own, or really digging the clear EZ clone display we have up. one thing that kinda gets on my nerves too is when ppl complain about prices....think about it, think about what forum ur on right now, if ur doing things the right way, price should be of no concern...all this shit pays for itself, BIG time. just my 2 pennies lol.

take care guys.

I clone in the HTG raft thingie under a single 23w CFL running 24 hours. Using PH'd water with .5m of H&G Roots Excelerator. No dome. I do use a seedling heating mat though. I spray them 1-2 times a day with PH'd water with AN Jumpstart in it.

On my last cloning run which was just transplanted lastnight I got MANY 4" roots out the bottom of each clone in 14 days. They could have been transplanted way sooner, but the timing did not work on my side. A few days ago I gave them some a little water with some nutes just to stave off the yellowing.

This is the Third time I cloned in this manner and am at 100% success.

whatever method u use, whatever medium MOST IMPORTANT to success
1. healthy mothers
2. clean cutting materials
3. proper temps- h2o & environment
4. keep it dark @ rootzone

put that in any order u wish.
i have cloned in:
-coco
-rockwool
-bubble cloner
-DIY ez cloner
-perlite
-cups of water sittin around

it is not mad science, rather some simple practices n proper environment. keeps the temps optimal n have healthy moms u will root eventually. i never mist or dome anything. i did notice my bubble cloner with H&G rootsexcel had the most prolific root systems to date.

i am about to go back to the ez cloner style... diy or not. only differance will be a loose lid or an inset lid. if i can find a good tub then diy it is. already have the manifold/ sprayers made from the past. if i search only to find all tubs suck/will leak i will buy a unit. they are well worth it.

in my area, the local temps are really high. a cycle timer will be needed to keep temps down from the heat generating pump. IT IS A MUST TO KEEP TEMPS OPTIMAL for success.
i will run on 1 min off for 5 min. cycle like that 24/7. i plan on a lil pre veg in the unit also. i have removed clones from my bubble cloner with roots longer than my forearm. aiming for this in the ez cloner style( more room for roots to hang around in it) the extra room is why i want to switch back only.

i also recommend using EWC teas or roots excellerator in the cloner. no one will be disappointed with either. ewc teas are much cheaper, but the ease of use of the RootsExcel is 2nd to none

my 2cents
Sir
