you'll wonder why your 60day strain took 75days if you dont count from when flowers start to form, about 2weeks after they have been induced.

A plant can NOT be flowering if it has NO flowers quite simply. If you suddenly decide to switch to 12/12 that is NOT the start of flowering (its only inducing the flowering cycle). Switching to 12/12 will start the plant on its flowering process thats around 7-10 days for males to start showing flowers and the females maybe up to 10-15 days to start showing gender under force flowering conditions.

lol ^^ exactly that.

12/12 indoors. Summer solstice outdoors.

Light is what triggers flowers. Anything else to determine the start of flowering is arbitrary.

I can tell you that it surely isn't the Summer Solstice where I'm from, that happens June 21st in my area and my plants aren't done until mid Oct. No way my plants are flowering for well over 100 days lol, not to mention I don't see buds until the end of August.

that is ludicrous. sorry, I just had to do that :)

first, I think that this discussion is silly. the purpose of the terms is so that everyone is on the same "page". You never hear of people growing outside stating specifics like.... "Im on day 45 of flower" but you always hear people growing inside using that terminology. Maybe it is being used wrong, but who cares if everyone means the same thing... which is.... since the change of lights to 12/12 .

person buys 60day strain seeds, counts from flipping the lights, cuts 60days later.. its not ripe, thats why its a bad way to count it.

you can count outdoor flowering times, if your around to see it as it starts flowering.
you should only use the days as a rough guide and wait for the plant to finish... but you will be 10-15days out if you start counting when you flip the timer :).
i wonder how far out some of you people could be when flowering a pure landrace sativa, id like to see you counting that lol

Cannabis plants will eventually flower (when sexually mature) regardless of photoperiod. Just because you decide 1 day to switch the lights to 12/12 the plant wont magically start flowering from that point so its like i said. When the lights are switched you are only inducing flowering and when the flowers start to appear days after the light switch cycle has been on 12/12 for however long it takes for the plants to start showing flowers then thats the start of flowering.
A plant with no flowers is NOT flowering regardless of photoperiod.
The main point anyway is when to harvest. I have never counted the days when my plants start flowering to harvest time as they are ready when they are ready.

Ok, just for the sake of propagating a dead end discussion...

Im growing a haze now, ssh, I had the light on for 24 hours a day and by day 40 I had microscopic preflowers, and by day 60 I had some pretty obvious flowers forming, all with 24 hour lights on. So would you say those plants were flowering? They had flowers visible without any magnification? And if I had left that plant on 24 hours light for say another month, would the day I switched the lights to 12/12 be day 30 of flower? Is there a difference between "in flower" and "flowering" as we dissect the semantics of this? And I havent found much of a variation in time from what is quoted by seed vendors (a 60 day strain), and the time between initiating 12/12 and harvest. Sure there is some, and I almost always go longer than they say, but mostly I thought it was because I grew bigger plants. I dunno. It might be fun to ask the people at breeders what they really mean when they give a "flower time" quote.

The seed vendors flowering times are never correct as everybodys growing environment and plant care methods differ.
And yes you having the lights on 24/0 would start your seedlings showing preflowers when they are sexually mature (usually 6-8wks) and regardless of your photoperiod if the plant is showing flowers then yes its flowering. If you start growing seedlings on 12/12 from the start they will still go through a vegging period before the have any signs of flowers.

but what if u put it to 12/12 right from seed or a week after germination? It's not going to start flowering until its over a month old.

everytime I've done a 12/12 from seed my plants are showing flowers between 3-4 weeks. Of course it could be the strain.

in nature does the plant wait for first day of 12/12..? NO..the plants first day of flowering in nature or indoors is........the first true day you see a few bunches of pistals forming..harvest when ready is the best way to tell..i dont even go by how many days 12/12 i just got by when harvest is ready..when its ready its ready! common sense and nature says count from day 1 of true flowers!!!!!!

From what I understand is that flowering hormones are produced early in vegetative stage in small numbers and increase as the plant matures. These hormones are neutralized by longer light cycles. As the light cycles decrease the hormones that survive increase. When the strain that is being grown acquires sufficient hormones the plant will flower.
Ive never took commercial seed vendors flower times as a rule but use them as a barometer that this strain will take longer or shorter to finish than that one.

I am not sure about flower, but if you have a longer veg it's a good idea to prepare for transition within the week before turning back 12/12, i have always preferred 13/11

ok question. I have a an original haze plant @ 3 months old. Not one single pre-flower has shown. At 3 months she/he should be mature correct? I do have the branching showing for over a month now that she/he is mature but still no flowers.

At 3 months it should have come from seed to ready to chop (hybrid/indica strain).
What is your light schedule(indoors or outdoors) and is the plant a pure sativa ????.
Here is one of my super skunk plants (seeds from nirvana) ready at 92 days from planting the seed. There is a way you can sex a plant in vegg (without flowers) but i just use this as an experienced guidemark tested by myself.

strain: original haze
inside with a light schedule of 11/13 the past month before that it was on 12/12.
have held of on the nitrogen since pure sat's fed high nitrogen usually will not flower, so it's been basically seaweed teas with a hint of molasses here and there to give the boost if needed.

LUDACRIS...your name explains it very well! Have grown indoors since 1981 & the flowering begins when you flip to 12/12. Give or take 5-7 days even on the same strain/phenos. My same c99 pheno will finish in 53 days one time & 58 the next. It's a plant (a living thing) So you cannot narrow the days down with complete mathematical precision to the exact day. The flowering times breeders post are accurate estimations (estimations) from when 12/12 is started. View poll results

In my opinion, you enter the flowering stage as soon as you turn to 12/12, which means they are flowering, it might not ACTUALLY happen until a few days to a week later where you'll see flowers, but the cycle determines what they are doing...

I start counting my flower time when I move my plants to the 12/12 room. But the weeks of flower are just guides and as others have relayed above, you harvest when they tell you they are ready.
