Here's what I find ironic. You think 17th and 18th century Europeans should have asked the 17th and 18th century Indians' permission, but don't think anyone has to ask 20th or 21st century Americans' permission. Hence, 21st century Americans are somehow inferior to 17th and 18th century Indians in your eyes. Care to explain this?
A series of non-rhetorical questions doesn't constitute an argument, therefore cannot constitute a straw man argument.
That's pretty funny, seeing how you're justifying our catastrophe (by saying we deserve it, presumably) with the Indians' catastrophe.
Many of the Indian tribes fought their asses off rather than cooperate with the settlers. Others fought their asses off to avoid displacement and/or outcompetition. But Zymos holds Indians up as the reason we should roll over and take it in the ass. Hilarious. I think I'd rather be like an Indian, and fight for mine, than a Zymos, and roll over and play dead.

I know what you are saying. I feel like the people that still see opportunity here are generally from somewhere else. There are different things which identify us. However times change and where as in the past a group could be identified by clothing, language, religion, and physical traits more easily than now, I don't feel like that has gone away entirely. While certain styles may dominate and there may be fringe groups, the standard cut of jeans is different here than lets say France. In addition there have always been heterogenious cultures. I mean would you have thought the same thing in Rome where you would certainly have encountered people besides Italian Romans. I was watching a geneology program on OPB the other night. This guy does the familiy history of celebrities. This show he was doing Stephen Colbert. Long story short his longest traceable bloodling dates back to a culturally German heritage. The guy who's show it was, was talking about an article that Ben Franklen had written from the time period that Colbert's ancestor was immegrating. It went something like this" Pennsylvania was founded as an Anglican colony. We can not support the influx of Germanic peoples to this colony as they will surely Germanise us before we can Anglicanise them. For they can no more adopt our customs and language than they can our complexion."

When you have people coming into a society which is largely hostile to them, they will generally polarize and hang onto their own beliefs. You saw this with every other group that has come here. (Old Irish neighborhoods...) I feel like our system is too antiquated to deal with the modern challenges brought about by well most things.
So for your original comment, there are ideas, customs, and habits which belong to my community at large and I did not come up with. That would be a culture. I notice that 2nd and 3rd generation Mexican people in the US tend to act, well more American. Are there many different groups with opposing views and habits here? Where are there not? However that does not mean that there isn't a common ground which encompasses us all. I would like to see true community festivals. Events of celebration free for everyone, where everyone is invited. We need to start trying to see the shortest distance between each other rather than nit picking the differences. The sooner we can start seeing each other as neighbors rather than black, white, brown, Mexican, American, or Russian, the better.

What does whether you or I were there or not have to do with the price of tea in China? Neither of us was there to see the settlers "steal" the Indians' land, either, but you've got no problem with using that argument to club immigration reformers.
How about Israel, Zymos? Did the Jews steal the land from the Arabs? Is what the Jews have done to the Palestinians "genocide" too? Is the idea of Jews limiting immigration to Israel only to fellow Jews "laughable" too?
Absolutely. If some wanker tells me my behavior's wrong, and he's only holding ME to that standard, then he loses all legitimacy. In fact, I start wondering if his problem's with ME, rather than the behavior in question.

Assimilation is a dead letter. Peoples assimilate when their numbers are limited and they are pressured to assimilate. Limiting the numbers of any immigrant group is now a political impossibility, and the majority doesn't have the confidence to pressure anyone to do anything, much less assimilate. In fact, the majority is now convinced they must be assimilated, that they must accommodate the norms of the immigrants, not the other way around.
For one thing, knowing someone else has cancer wouldn't make me feel any better about finding out I had cancer, too.
For another, there's the matter of degree. No, Japan doesn't have the degree of ethnic disunity we do. Not even in the same ball park. America is at the extreme end of that scale, and moving further out as we speak.
To answer my question, no, I don't see an American people any more. I do see people deluding themselves, though.
