is it legal to shoot your dog?

If you have a dog that is on the brink of death but you don't have the money to go to a vet an euthanize, can you take it into the woods and shoot it? Is that legal?

most humane society's do euthanasia free of charge if your in the states. I've been a shelter worker over 10 years now and we always offer free services to the community. Call around and find one that does.
sorry about the situation. It's a tough one but it is the ultimate gift of love by ending his suffering in a humane way.

Humanely putting animals down is most certainly legal and is done daily on farms across the globe. Why the fuck would I have to wait for a vet to put my own suffering animal down wether its a dog a cat or a cow?

Yup, unless you live in a very weird area legally speaking. Main caveats is it has to be legal to DISCHARGE the firearm in the area you are and it should be a very clean one shot sort of operation. You f*ck up putting down an animal then yes, you have just committed a crime in many areas, regardless of your intent. At least locally our vets are pretty reasonable about sliding scales and will often wave charges altogether if there's financial necessity.

Typically not in a city or town, but anywhere out in the sticks.

Might wanna tell your neighbors if they're close.

never shot my own dog, certainly beats watching them piss all over themselves, with doggy dementia and sore joints imo.....sad but its life for us all...

even if the outcome involves blood!

at least its all over in an instant...

just wish i could have someone blow my head off when im senile and in pain,,,, gotta become a criminal to end your own life as well...

Dont know if this is too late but... and don't know about the legalities, (and as far as I'm concerned, don't care), again but... I had to do just that. I chose a 22 rimfire because I heard that the mob uses them, because it goes in the skull, bounces around, and works very well. I loved my dog very much. If I had to do it again, I would use the biggest slug I could get. I will spare you any further unecessary info.

The three S's apply most of the time in the sticks.

Shoot, Shovel, and Shut Up.

You never know when a whiny ASPCA or PETA bitch will come along and say you should have had a stranger give them an injection with a concoction that may or may not leave them in a conscious state while the last one arrests the heart.

IMO there is no more HUMANE way to put down an animal than with a well executed shot. Instantaneous death. Be careful with the .22s, a guy up in Steamboat Springs that runs a dog sled farm had complaints from his annual culling because the cubs would be left twitching.

Spend the extra money on something bigger.
I have though about this with mine, luckily I still have a few years, but when the time comes what will I do? Tough question.

I imagine it is illegal. Unfortunately these day shelters not only charge but here in Cali they keep the animal in a cage for a certain amount of days before putting them down in case you change your mind! Really sucks.

I had dog with stomach cancer, and I made sure he got whatever he wanted. When I started to see him suffer in the least, I had him put down. Watching my dog go peacefully with a simple injection looked painless and humane. I'm sorry I'm not man enough, for you farmers, but shooting my own best friend is too tough to me. I'll shoot a person before a dog. I just don't have the same love for people as I do for animals; particularly dogs. If I absolutely had to put down my dog w a gun, I would make sure the gun has the knock down power to ensure instant death, and you better get it right the first time or it will probably haunt you forever, and I'm sure a much larger crime.

I had a few near death cows. When the disposal truck shows up the driver carries a .22 to administer the coupe de grace if the cow is still alive. When it's too late to get the cow to the slaughterhouse, a downer in farmer jargon, they go into dogfood rather than McDonalds.
I had a neighbor put down his favorite horse with a shotgun slug, it made the worst mess I've ever seen. He said he was crying too hard and didn't do a clean job. He also wasn't thinking straight and did the deed inside the barn which made extricating the corpse a nightmare. He also hadn't gotten a backhoe yet so I had to pull the corpse out with a smaller tractor then dig the hole with the other neighbor's backhoe. He's been there forever and has several tombstones for passed horses.
When my all time favorite dog was breathing his last I called my long time vet who said he'd do it, but I could save $200 with a well placed shot. I discussed it with the dog, we agreed that if the tables were turned he'd put me out of my misery when the time was right, but it was his turn and not mine. He has a beautiful sunny spot on the farm, I visit him frequently.
I told the dog story to the guy running the local SPCA branch, who I have known a bit for years. He told me to shut up fast (we were in the branch) because a lot of the volunteers were P.E.T.A. freaks who would go off the deep end as what I did was illegal.
Shoot, shovel, and shut up.

Areas where I was born, it was responsibility of huntsman to finish his old dog. But it takes nerves, so it is not everymans job.

When I was kid, our neighbour came to finish one of our dogs. Well, he was so drunk, he misshoot the dog and dog run all over snowy yard, leaving lots of red. Neighbour shoot it second time, then wrapped him into plastic. After while I went out and saw that plastic raising and lowering. I went inside to say, that dog is still alive. Neighbour already left his home, so my brother had to quit dog with axe. So, what we learn? Do not shoot your dog while you are drunk or use axe at first place. :noway:
